HOT ITEMS

I want to extend a big THANK YOU to all who have contributed to the AM
DX NewsFlash these past 7 years. You are what makes this bulletin what
it is. Unfortunately, I will stop publishing the NewsFlash in a few
months (by September). As the concept of an email newsletter for AM
DXers has been proven, it is time for me to concentrate my time on other
projects (SDXM, sticker collecting, WWI airplane modeling, etc).
IRCA publishes its email newsletter 35+ times/year (I edit this too!!).
You may want to consider joining the IRCA and receive its email
newsletter, the "soft" DX Monitor (SDXM). Price to the world is -
$10.00/year. Send to: IRCA HQ, PO Box 1831, Perris CA 92572-1831

From the ARRL Letter Vol 20 No 20 dated 16 May. Unfortunately, the
test will be from 1030 to 1500 local time, so propagation won't be very
favorable:
* "Wireless Giant of the Pacific" on the air again: Former RCA coast
station KPH, Point Reyes, California, will attempt to contact the
Liberty ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien, KXCH, on Sunday, May 20, between 1730
and 2200 UTC. Initial contact on 500 kHz will shift to 426 kHz for KPH,
and 425 kHz for KXCH. KPH may also transmit on 6477.5 kHz. KPH will
broadcast commemorative messages and possibly a traffic list. The former
KPH facilities are part of the Point Reyes National Seashore, which has
a strong interest in the important role the station played in the
history of radio communications. The Marine Radio Historical Society Web
site http://www.radiomarine.org has more information.--Dick Dillman,

Bad news for german MW-DXers: Bloody Mega Radio fired up another
transmitter. It's located near Braunschweig, at the same site as DLF 756
kHz and operating on 630 kHz. Currently just an open carrier switched on
and off every five minutes. Must be a test for them. Power is 100 kW,
I'm living just 10 km away from the site. I'm afraid for my S-meter...
We are not amused... :-(

The Missouri Radio Message Board at
http://members2.boardhost.com/moradio/ is reporting that KOCR 1310 in
Joplin MO is off the air. I haven't seen anything yet on any of these
lists. Maybe John Tudenhan can check. I don't get them from Jefferson
City!
**John Tudenham - w0jrp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
They are back on the air but don't know how long. Owned by Ozark
Christian College another person had a LMA and they called it (News
Max), but they went bankrupt and they turned it back to OCC. They are
playing gospel music off and on , probably trying to find a buyer.

While doing some checking. KXMX-1190 has been sold to Salem
Communications, owner of KRLA-870.
According to an e mail I got from Robert Wien in CA, the M Street
reports that KMCA-1460-Burney CA has been busted by the FCC for moving
from 1450 to 1460 without their permission! It has been heard here and I
have had a report out to KMCA. The GM gave me their new address and said
they would be happy to QSL my report. I phoned them a couple months back
and the GM was very "unfriendly" saying they have been too busy to
reply. Now I know! I guess operating in Redding CA away from an FCC
office, they probably thought no one would report them. They were fined
$15,000. 30 years ago the FCC would have totally pulled their license!

Last night (MAY 14) I heard a weak test tone on 1386.00 kHz at 0155
UTC and then -
0158 - Short announcement, Interval signal (flute + drum)
0159:50 - Man: "This is the National anthem (of Kenya...?)"
0200 - Time signal . . . -------- National Anthem (choir)
The signal was weak but the channel was clear last night - what was
unusual in my noisy location.

Chris Martin - Darwin AUSTRALIA - martincg@xxxxxxxxxxx
G'Day from Darwin I have been on an excellent DX'pedition up the
centre of Australia.Whilst in Darwin have been in contact with the UN
office here and on the phone to Dili in East Timor. The UN is running a
station "Radio UNTAET" on 684 kHz 24 hours a day with 5Kw. Program is
mostly in Indonesian but some English, Portuguese and the local dialect
are used. I have heard the station in both English and Indonesian. The
over night music program starts at 1200z and runs thru to 2100z. No
announcements are made during this period. You can e-mail them at
lim4@xxxxxx (technical manager) or drurz@xxxxxx (program manager). The
term UNTAET stands for United Nations Transitional Administration East
Timor. I have spoken to Lim a few times on the phone which is a local
phone call for Darwin and trunks via satellite to the PABX in Dili for
which you need to know the extension of the person you require. He tells
me that as East Timor is not yet a country and that there is no
regulatory control for radio quite a few pirates have sprung up - mostly
on the FM band.
Further monitoring from a DX site we visited on the Cox Peninsula
turned up another station in East Timor on 1404 kHz. this station is run
by the Catholic Bishop of Bacau. there is far more Portuguese heard on
this station including relays of Radio Portugal. Also lots of religion
with prayers by nuns and recitations. Commercials are in Indonesian with
reverb. The currency there appears to be Aussie dollars. "Radio Timor"
1404 does not run 24hr. S/on seems to be at 2100z. I am making further
enquiry as to the address and any e-mail for the station on 1404. Many
mentions of "Timor more as'i " (sic) can be heard and I will find out
what this means.
To DX East Timor the strongest signal out of 684 & 1404 is by far 1404
kHz and Portuguese should be the clincher for it.
East Timor is GMT +9.
G'Day from Darwin. During our travels up the Stuart Highway we DX'ed
from various sites with beverage and box loop antenna and of course
matching balun. Some new Aussies were discovered.
621 South West Australia running 'Easy Listening Australia' format.
693 6WR Kununurra with Indigenous format talk back, country music and
health issues. Strong.
765 Katherine NT Hot FM (translator) from Darwin.
936 Unk location announces as "You are listening to the Packer Network
in and around the Kimberley and the Pilbara". This one could be
at Broome as Broome gets most of the mentions. The fact that they
are announcing a network is of interest, could have other outlets
on FM. Again format is Indigenous but with far more Didgeridoo
music.
1512 Unk location announcers as "FM 98 and on AM 1512 in the mid west".
FM 98 operates out of Geraldton. This one is a big signal in the
centre of Australia, whilst 693 is solid here in the Top End.
***Richard Jary - rjary@xxxxxxxxxx
I did a bit of research on the ACA database after reading these and
came up with the following...
936 Fitzroy Crossing, WA, 5kW. Registered to Wangki Yupurnanupurru
Aboriginal Corporation, PO Box 52, Fitzroy Crossing WA 6765. Callsign
6FX. No other licences though for this, but that doesn't mean they don't
relay someone else.
1512 is at Morawa, registered to Geraldton Newspapers, PO Box 128,
Geraldton WA 6530. Only gives an EIRP on 8137 watts so I guess a 5kW
transmitter also.
No luck on the web looking for station info though, looks like a
letter seeking information is in order which I will do soon to update
the next MW guide.

I found a list of Aussie community broadcast stations buried deep
inside the web site for the Australian BC Authority. The URL is
http://www.aba.gov.au/what/broplan/community_services.htm You'll need
to scroll partway down the page until you find mention of community
broadcasting licences, then click on it to download the file. It lists
a whole bunch of AM/FM/TV stations operated by aboriginal, ethnic, etc
groups. 6FX is among those listed, but it doesn't say much more than
what's noted below. Enjoy!

I was wondering if folks could give me some candid comments on the
Drake SW-2? I have investigated various radios and have noted some
popular units on the list like the ICF-2010 and the Drake R-8 but
haven't seen anything on the SW-2.
DXing.com gives it the same rating as some of the more popular units
on the list but thought it would be best to get info from those who know
MW DX best. Please email me directly so we don't tie up the list.
*Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
I recently bought a Kenwood R-1000 for a back up receiver. I mainly
use the Drake R-8, but I needed a backup with a noise blanker as I live
near an electric fence. The noise blanker in the R-1000 works nearly as
well as the one in the R8. In some cases better. Anyway, I changed a few
things like change the sellectivity for the 2.7 khz SSB filter would
work on AM (with the e mail help of Don Moman), and cut the cap for of
the AGC circuit so the attack time would be faster. I fould a bit of
attenuation in the AM circuit, but the three resistors are buried on the
main board, so at this time I really didn't care to tear into it. After
discovering the separate MW antenna input was set at 1000 ohms, I
decided to build a matching transformer as all my antennas are 72 ohm
coax. What a difference! The gain jumped up close to 10 DB, bu the S
Meter. It did make a bit of difference though. I do need a presellector
in the circuit. However, the sensitivity is about equal with the Drake
R8. The R 1000 seems to have a decent low noise floor too. Tonight,
playing around with the receiver, I found KVTK-1570-South Dakota with
their 71 watts topping CKMW-MB off the Eastern Beverage, no presellector
at that time. The receiver has been OK with Tahiti-738 and New Zealand-
657/567 also, although the Drake R8 does better in ECSS and the passband
tuning. I may replace the 2.7 khz filter with something better at a
later date. Not a bad receiver for a backup. I can't complain.
*kevin redding - amfmtvdx@xxxxxxxxx
I sure like my R-1000. Its got a FET going out though and I will have
to fix that.
***Craig Seager - cseager@xxxxxxxxx
I only have a little first hand experience of the R1000, but have
owned the "little brother" R600 since 1981 and for many years used it as
my primary mediumwave receiver (unmodified). The selectivity is a
little broad compared to my main receiver now (R75 with), but at time of
purchase the narrow filter was actually better than the R1000's until
Kenwood changed the design of the latter in response to a universal
outcry from the DX community.
I suspect the RF circuitry in both receivers is very similar
otherwise. Before the ABC went 24 hours (striking the final nail in
mediumwave DX from suburban Australia unless one has a directional
antenna) I heard lots of Africans, Asians and Europeans on my R600 & no
doubt would continue to hear many North Americans, given the right
location and antenna set-up.
Both the R1000 and R600 are a nice budget option secondhand.

Here's an interesting article on CKUA-580 sent to me by a friend in
Alberta. Among other things, they'll be going 24 hour soon.
The Globe and Mail, Saturday, May 5, 2001
Albertan oldie ready to make it all night
By Helen Metella
One of Canada's oldest and oddest radio outlets is planning a
transformation next month that, in this electronic universe at least,
belies belief: It will finally convert itself to a 24-hour format.
"We're probably the last station in the world to do so," chuckles
Brian Dunsmore, program director of Edmonton-based CKUA Radio Network, a
broadcast entity unique for much more than its operating hours.
CKUA is actually a combined AM and FM network that serves 80 per cent
of Alberta's population. It's been on the air for 74 years -- started,
in short, as a public broadcaster almost a full decade before CBC Radio
started -- but never between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Unless, that
is, the current morning announcer Cam Hayden arrives early and throws on
a classical disc -- one that might very well be an LP. The station
relies heavily on its 60,000 vinyl albums, considered one of the deepest
jazz and classical music collections in the country. Occasionally it
even dips into its 10,000-piece library of 78s.
There's a panoply of such quirks at CKUA. With a block programming
schedule that careers from classical to country, bluegrass to jazz and
reggae to rock, the non-profit station is a throwback to the mythic mid-
sixties era of radio, when FM announcers still prepared their own
peculiar playlists and commented upon them not in zingers, but in
thoughtful paragraphs.
CKUA is also distinguished by its zealous listeners, who literally
resurrected the station from the dead and keep it alive in a unique
fashion.
CKUA was launched in 1927 by the University of Alberta's faculty of
extension to broadcast evening lectures by professors. During the
forties, it was owned by Alberta Government Telephones, whose minister
staved off commercialization by thundering that it was "the last outpost
of radio freedom in Canada."
In 1994, after two decades as part of ACCESS, Alberta's educational
radio and TV network, CKUA was privatized. Three years later, its then-
board of directors had spent early $4-million in transitional funds
granted by the province, and saw little likelihood of raising the
revenue to continue. So they turned off the transmitters.
But during five weeks of dead air, the station was revived by a
grassroots campaign of volunteers who popped up across the province and
orchestrated a rescue via the Internet and the media. The next month,
listeners pledged $1.2-million during a two-week fundraiser.
Today, more than half of CKUA's $2.2-million annual budget flows in
through an audience-subscription plan. Approximately 7,000 listeners
donate between $10 and $100 every month by automatic debit of their
credit cards. "We tell people, if you're listening to this station, you
must like it, so why not pay to keep it coming? Just like you pay for
your newspaper," says Dunsmore.
With $200,000 more collected in one-off pledges during its spring and
fall fundraisers, some corporate sponsorship, a modest fee for being the
broadcaster of Alberta's emergency public-warning system and $600,000 in
limited advertising -- no more than six minutes of advertising per hour.
CKUA has become a rare beast. It's a wildly alternative,
professionally run radio station with a future.
Even more surprisingly, it appears to have reversed provincial
government thinking on some public support. But despite the possibilty
of new government assistance, the station faces daunting financial
challenges ahead, with $8-million to $10-million needed to replace 17
ancient transmitters and an increase to market value of previously
nominal rent and utility bills.
Unlike Toronto's CJRT-FM, which lost its $1.3-million provincial grant
in 1996 and in January of this year dropped its classical and folk
programming as a survival tactic to become JAZZ-FM 91, CKUA revels in
its idiosyncratic programming. Besides its renegade playlist, it
broadcasts such information-laden series as The Long Weekend, a history
of popular music between the First and Second World Wars, and Heritage
Trails,a 500-part series of three-minute vignettes on the history of
Alberta.
The key to CKUA's continued existence is not only such resolutely non-
commercial focus, but its brain-power, says Dunsmore. The Long
Weekend'sco-creator, David Gregory, is an Athabasca University
professor. His first series, From Ragtime to Rolling Stones,is in reruns
20 years after it began and still receives approving listener comment.
Then there's CKUA's roster of erudite announcers, many of whom have been
with the station for decades. The longest-serving is Jack Hagerman, who
hosts a Sunday afternoon big-band show as The Old Disc Jockey. He joined
CKUA in 1949. Dunsmore, 51, himself converses knowledgeably about such
cutting-edge world-music artists as Eliades Ochoa.
"Philosophically, I think people are tired of being steamrollered by
pop culture," Dunsmore says. "There's a significant number of people who
are tired of Disneyfication, who are tired of the white-bread mentality
and want some sort of substance."

Another veteran of the radio wars signs off
By: Robert Philpot, Star-Telegram Newspaper
Updated: Sunday, May. 13, 2001 at 17:33 CDT
One of the drawbacks of covering radio is that all too often I find
myself writing about people losing their jobs. In the past few weeks,
I've written about talk-show host Rick Vanderslice being fired from
KERA/90.1 FM and Ryan Chase being axed from the morning show at
KDGE/102.1 FM "The Edge."
Now we come to Connie Herrera, who was the producer for Kevin
McCarthy's KLIF/570 AM talk show for 14 years. As many of you know,
McCarthy has been ill and on indefinite leave from the station. In what
station officials called a consolidation move, Herrera's position was
terminated May 4 and Scott Anderson's 9 a.m.-noon show was moved to 10
a.m.-2 p.m. to take up McCarthy's noon-2 p.m. slot.
McCarthy remains with the station, although his status is vague. As
for Herrera, she isn't bitter about what happened.
"I was there for 14 years, and I loved every minute of what I was
doing," she says. "But I feel real positive about this move for me."
Herrera said that when she was cleaning out her desk at KLIF, she
began gathering photos of celebrities who had appeared on McCarthy's
show - Tom Hanks, Suzanne Somers, Norman Schwarzkopf, even prop-comic
Carrot Top -- and recordings from other celebrities who appeared.
"I realized that that was what the show was all about: entertainment
and variety," she said. "We weren't about being angry or being mean."
What this means to McCarthy's show may, in the end, be up to McCarthy.
Dan Bennett, vice president/market manager for KLIF's parent company,
Susquehanna Radio Corp., says that the station does have a plan should
McCarthy return.
"Right now, Kevin is out indefinitely, and we have no idea on his
return so we have no need for a producer," Bennett said in an email. "If
Kevin is medically able to return, Donavan Lewis, his old longtime board
operator [who is currently with KLIF], who also has producer experience,
will produce."
Judging from my email and from messages on a bulletin board at
McCarthy's Web site (www.kevinmccarthy.net), the mood among McCarthy's
fans is worried at best, pessimistic at worst.
As for Herrera, who's checking out other employment options, she
remains upbeat about her career.
"I feel that something great is going to happen," she says. "I can't
tell you why I feel that way, but I do."
That's the Ticket -- kinda: While we're on the subject of Susquehanna
stations, the company switched its 104.1 frequency early last week from
KMRR to KTDK. The Sanger-based signal, which had been used to simulcast
KKMR/93.3 FM "Merge Radio" and expand its reach north of Fort Worth-
Dallas, is now being used to simulcast sports/guy-talk KTCK/1310 AM "The
Ticket."
You don't have to be terribly intuitive to figure out that the Ticket,
getting increased competition on its guy-talk side from KYNG/105.3 FM
and new competition on its sports-talk side from KESN/103.3 FM "ESPN
Radio," is trying to fend off its foes by adding an FM signal. And it's
doing it fast, too -- maybe a little too fast, judging from the static-
plagued reception I received in east Fort Worth near the I-30 oop 820
interchange (and near Fort Worth's hospital district as well). "For the
first three weeks we will not have the audio to the best level it can
be," Bennett says. "That is about three weeks away." It'll need a signal
boost to compete, because KMRR was not a factor in the most recent
Arbitron report.
Limbaugh rock: Rush Limbaugh might not have Bill Clinton to kick
around anymore -- well, he doesn't have President Clinton to kick around
anymore -- but that hasn't stopped him from a ratings surge. Howard
Kurtz, The Washington Post's media reporter, recently wrote that
Limbaugh's ratings are up in 13 of 16 major markets.
One of those markets was Fort Worth-Dallas, where Limbaugh had a
strong first quarter on Arlington's WBAP/820 AM. Station manager Bob
Shomper says that during 2000, Limbaugh drew an average overall share of
7.3; during the winter Arbitron quarter for this year, he drew a 9.4.
Limbaugh's average 2000 rating for people 25-54 was 5.9; for the first
quarter this year, it was 6.8. The share is a percentage of the
estimated listening audience.
Shomper says he's amused by people who thought that Limbaugh's ratings
would drop now that a Republican is in the White House.
"It reminds me of a similar argument that happened when Clinton beat
George Bush in 1992," Shomper said. "People would say, `Your guy's not
in there; you're not gonna have anything to talk about.' " Now that a
Republican is in there, Limbaugh still has plenty to talk about -- and
people are listening.

I saw this note on a broadcasting listserv and thought it would be
worth a mention here.
Something of a milestone has been reached today in Bakersfield, and is
worthy of a brief mention.
KUZZ AM/FM afternoon drive personality Chris Conner today marks 30
years on Bakersfield radio in the same 3-7PM time slot. Conner started
at then-top 40 KAFY on May 10, 1971. He moved to country KUZZ in 1977
and has been there ever since. Incidentally, as KUZZ (AM) now occupies
the 550 kHz frequency that KAFY had in 1971, he can be found at the
same dial position as 30 years ago.

I have to plug my favorite "jock"; according to the jock bios on
www.wdaf.com, David Lawrence started at WDAF-610 on December 22, 1973,
about 4 years before it went country and when it was programming sort-of
MOR/chicken rock. Like Chris, he's one of the few jocks in the business
who has been able to succeed under various formats for a long, long
time, without having to hop around to other stations or media. He even
does the top-rated talk show in the Kansas City market, from 5-6 am! -

One of the leading voices in Christian radio has lost his brief battle
with cancer. Brandt Gustavson, a longtime staff member with Trans World
Radio, passed away on May 14, 2001 at the age of 64. At the time of his
passing, he was President of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB),
an organization of mainly Protestant Christian broadcasters. Gustavson
was one of the voices on Trans World Radio (under the leadership of
TWR's late founder, Dr. Paul Freed) throughout the 1980s and into the
early 1990s, lending his voice to a few one-minute spots on the mission
of Trans World Radio, "TWRMinute". His voice was heard on two AM
outlets: PJB-800 Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles, and KTWG-801 Agana,
Guam, as well as TWR's shortwave outlets and the Christian broadcasters
that carried "TWRMinute". Another Christian broadcaster has been called
