[HCDX] 60m AIR signals 01/15
While conditions 24 hours earlier were great in general for 60m -
especially the midday African's, today was quite poor. Even the usually
strong Chinese stations (like 5030) were very poor. I had the antenna
pointed roughly towards Asia and was casually tuning thru the band at
0000, noting the tones on certain frequencies that usually indicate AIR
stations warming up.... most were nominally 1000 hz (as low as 940 to as
high as 1050 hz), 4940 was measured to be 527 hz. I can't confirm that all
of these were actually AIR signals as some of them never amounted to more
than this....
As time progressed a few of these actually faded up very nicely - 4970
with that always haunting I/S at 0023, and 5010 parallel 4920 with a 5
minute English newscast from 0035-0040. The signal peaked on these 2
stations during the newscast and rose to outstanding levels, perhaps as
good as they are during the 1530 UTC opening we also get this time of
year. By 0055 they were marginal again. It is rare that the 0000-0100
opening yields such strong signals, but magic when it does.
