** CHINA [non]. Well, well, well. Tonight, July 7 at 0100 on 9570 up
pops the return of CRI in English via Cuba. It was gone for a short
time. Good signal but marred by a co-channel and resulting
heterodyne. Pretty much knocked off Romania`s attempt in English to
NAm. //11940 was fair. CRI in Chinese at 0200 (Bob Thomas, CT, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)

** CONGO. Hi! In a recent DXLD message it was asked if anybody heard
RTVC Brazzaville in Spanish. I did, not at the announced time but at
2045-2100. But it's absolutely not aired regularly at this time.
Usually there's music then. Fat signal here in Central Europe! [5985]
(Thorsten Hallmann, Münster, Germany, July 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CONGO DR. RTNC-Mbandaka gets new SW transmitter |
Excerpts from report by Congolese TV from Kinshasa on 11th July
Radio-Television Nationale Congolaise [RTNC]-Mbandaka has just been
equipped with a new shortwave transmitter. The inauguration ceremony
took place in front of the administrative building in the presence of
Equateur Province Governor (Christian Eniko-Bokula?). Correspondent
Boyela Ekanga reports from Mbandaka.
[Ekanga] It was the provincial director of RTNC-Mbandaka, Malebo Ma
Bambuya, who received the new 1-kW transmitter. So RTNC-Mbandaka has
now become a genuine provincial station... The governor assured the
RTNC workers that their working conditions will be improved and that
they will receive adequate training. He also said that an FM station,
a power generator, a freezer and a battery will be offered to the
RTNC station. Equipped with this new material, RTNC-Mbandaka will be
able to cover a range of up to 300 km. Source: RTNC TV, Kinshasa, in
French 1900 gmt 11 Jul 00 (BBC Monitoring July 13 via DXLD)
WTFK??!! This one has not been reported in ages. The 1996 WRTH listed
under ZAÏRE Mbandaka on 5995 with 10 kW, scheduled W. 05-08, 10-12,
16-21; Sat 05-08, 10-22; Sun 05-22; with news at 0430, 1030, 1630. It
was no longer listed in 1998 (Glenn Hauser, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 4960.25, Radio Villa 0212-0240 July 12;
They're back, with the same "Los 5 Grandes de la Bachata" programming
that they had before last Christmas. Very good signal. 0240 powerful
carrier on 4960.0 made a mess of it (Mark Mohrmann, VT, July 12,
WORLD OF RADIO 1044, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GUATEMALA. R. Verdad, 4052.47, July 8 0220-0303*, Spanish talk,
variety of religious music, including choral church music, organ and
local; ID. S/off with long NA. Surprised they were on this late. Weak
(Brian Alexander, PA, WORLD OF RADIO 1044, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** IVORY COAST. Has anybody heard a French programme recently on
6015 at 2000/2100? Sounded African. "Radiodiffusion de la...". Return
of the Abidjan transmitter listed in WRTH? (Thorsten Hallmann,
Münster, Germany, July 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** LIBYA. V. of Africa, 15435, July 4 1728-1736, English ID, news. I
am hearing English at these times: 1728-1736 and 2033-2038. The 1728
broadcast always has co-channel QRM from Sa`udi Arabia. 2033 is in
the clear, but with muffled audio. No English heard at 2330 or 0130
when checked on July 4, 5, 6, 8 (Brian Alexander, PA, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** MADAGASCAR. R. Madagasikara, 5009.62, July 8 *0256-0335+, s/on
with IS, 0258 anthem, 0300 opening announcements, local music,
vernacular talk (Brian Alexander, PA, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MOLDOVA [non]. I've just been reading DXLD 00-90 via HCDX
(something I look forward to doing since subscribing) and the Radio
Moldova schedule I quoted from is all that was on the piece of paper
I was sent. The station has reduced its bc time, according to earlier
information received, and I believe is also on air only Mondays-
Fridays, though that's not stated either. For now, good listening &
73's from (Noel Green, UK, July 12, WORLD OF RADIO 1044, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** MONGOLIA. 12085, Voice of Mongolia, English from 1030 to 1100
still very good to Northeast Ohio. Past years I have rarely heard
them past April or mid-May at best (Lee Silvi, Mentor, July 7, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** NEW ZEALAND. Some good news for a change! From RNZI's web site
comes news that Radio New Zealand International has signed a one year
contract to re-broadcast selected sports commentaries from Radio
Sport.
Manager Linden Clark says she is delighted to be able to resume
coverage of major New Zealand sports and believes that this
announcement will be warmly welcomed by RNZI's audience in the
Pacific. She says that the one year contract allows for a more
targeted approach to coverage. RNZI will be broadcasting rugby (All
Blacks matches, selected Super 12 (two or three weekend matches) and
selected NPC matches), one day cricket internationals and Sports
World, Radio Sport's Sunday morning sports program. From time to
time, coverage will also feature netball internationals and some key
Rugby League matches.
Coverage will start this Sunday, 15 July with the Tri-Nations/
Bledisloe Cup rugby match from Sydney, Australia, starting at 1000 UT
on 11720 kHz (via John A. Figliozzi, swprograms July 13, via DXLD)
** NEW ZEALAND. Glenn, I saw John Figliozzi's item about RNZI
resuming SBGs. What a pleasure it's been to listen to SBG-free RNZI.
Now we'll have to put up with that nonsense on Fridays, Saturdays and
Sundays, at the very least. Sigh! (Ivan Grishin, Ont., DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
How can it be good news??? The silly ballgames will pre-empt normal
programming with at least a modicum of intellectual or cultural
content, at times unexpectedly, and the sports they cover are of no
interest anyway even to sports fans in the US (gh)
** NIGERIA. Glenn, Voice of Nigeria on 7265 kHz last night (Jul 12th)
had a nasty on channel "het" (another station) with it, at least for
the first hour I monitored. So maybe not such a good move after all??
VOA is using that channel (I think that would be the Botswana relay?)
right up to 0500, so perhaps VOA is keeping the TX up past 0500 with
what sounds like a test tone to me?? Maybe not every night this is
happening?? Nigeria was 100% in the clear on Jul 11th. We will have
to do a bit more monitoring here and see how it goes. Regards, (David
Zantow, Janesville, WI, WORLD OF RADIO 1044, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NIGERIA. VON July 13 0525 check talking about Nigeria, no het now
but off=frequency, good around 7265.4; wonder what the couple
stations left on 7255 are (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NIGERIA. Have been pondering more on where the ON channel
interference with Voice Of Nigeria's new frequency of 7265 kHz could
be coming from. This I think is Germany, Sudwestrundfunk from
Rohrdorf interfering (after VOA signs off at 0500). As you might be
aware this "was" a fairly well received station around the 0500~0600
UT time frame, at least in my area. Once in awhile I would tune this
in just for the music (in the background) if I was doing something
else in the room. So Nigeria's new frequency may have well been a
poor move?? Just another comment, Germany and Nigeria both sit a bit
off frequency. Germany down a bit on 7264.95. I have found Nigeria up
a bit on 7265.50. So for the het that you hear (Dave N9EWO Zantow,
WI, July 13, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NIGERIA. Listening tip: FRCN Ibadan 6050, 2100 with Network News,
closedown 2135. Fine signal sometimes and much Nigerian Politics...
Bye (Thorsten Hallmann, Münster, Germany, July 13, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** PAKISTAN. I have been paying more attention to what I've been
monitoring, and have "found" the English news I knew I'd heard
somewhere. World Service to West Europe opens c0759 with a short
extract from the Koran and after the time signal and typewriter tune
at 0800 there is 3 minutes of news in English (followed by Sindhi).
Frequencies are 21460 and 17835 (subject to change due UAE co-channel
c0850+). [new sked from BBCM agrees on English at 0800-0805 -gh]
I would mention that the English language can often be heard during
political items or interviews during World Service transmissions, but
at no regular times. Too, if/when cricket commentaries are carried,
these are also partly in English.
Maybe of interest, the newly combined service to the M.E. in Turkish
1630 (ex 1700-1730), Irani 1700 (ex 1300-1345) and Arabic 1745-1830
(ex 1800-1845) is introducing each service in English, but I have
heard no other English content. From July 14th Karachi will utilise
17815 and Islamabad 11645 & 15725 during this service.
By the way, during his recent excursion to S.E.Asia, Bob Padula
reported hearing English news at 0100 on 9780. According to schedule,
this frequency is being used for the Assami Service at 0045-0115 now
// new 11645 (ex 12015 since 12 July) & 15450 via Karachi. This
S.E.Asian service continues in Bangla 0115, Hindi 0200 and Tamil
0245-0315 close. I hope the above is of some interest to you (Noël
Green, UK, July 12, WORLD OF RADIO 1044, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** PERÚ. La Voz de los Campesinos, 6956.65, July 4 0240-0255*,
Spanish pops, OA music, ID, s/off announcements, NA by local band;
not heard since (Brian Alexander, PA, July 8, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** PERÚ. 6672.94, Radio Andina, 0220-0306 July 11, Andean vocals,
announcer with time checks, and ID's. No ads. Many mentions of and
songs about Huancabamba. Live sign-off announcement, Peruvian NA,
0306*. Excellent signal with peaks to +20dB over (Mark Mohrmann, VT,
DX LISTENING DIGEST))
** PERÚ. 6672.9, R. Andina, s/on at *1019 w/NA and ID by woman,
huayno mx followed. Fair. (Horacio Nigro, Montevideo, Uruguay, July
10, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** PERÚ. On 6857.6, R.Dif. Huancabamba, 0150 July 11, man giving
"saludos" to a woman of name "Ojeda", deep QSB but enough and
fortunate to trigger synchro detector of my SONY 7600G on key words
as "Huancabamba" and "locutor de Radio Emisora Huancabamba". QSA 0/2.
Gone at 0208 so presumed s/off at or arnd 0200. Also tried the next
following evening July 13 at 0024, much better w/prgm "Folklor de mi
Tierra", TC: "...horas...minutos en Difusora Huancabamba Radio".
"Música sin Fronteras" prgm followed presented with canned anmt:
``Estás escuchando... (by male)... Música sin Fronteras`` (female
with echoed voice at the end) Best 73 es DX de (Horacio A. Nigro,
Montevideo, Uruguay, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** ROMANIA. [See CHINA for return of 9570 QRM; and:] At 0400, RRI on
11940 is splashed on by Christian Science in Ukrainian(?) on 11930.
//15105 is poor to fair, suffering form light to moderate splash from
15115 HCJB (Bob Thomas, CT, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** RUSSIA. Glenn, meanwhile Radio-1 is back in Moscow on OIRT-FM but
not on 171 from Belarus (Sasnovy transmitter), so at least for the
moment this relay was not reestablished. Also the Ukrainian Lviv-
Krasne site remains silent on 171. Find enclosed more information
from Nick Pashkevich, replying to my inquiry if Radio-1 is back.
Regards, (Kai Ludwig, Germany, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
----------
Yes, they are ! On 68.3 MHz only. Pavel Mikhailov phoned them and was
told that current tx. power is 2.5 kw, situated in Balashikha
(Kupavna) site, ex-jamming facility, just outside the Eastern part of
Moscow, that's about 5-7 km from my home, so I have a nice signal.
The new station name is "Radio Odin-Dobroe Radio".
Also Radio Slavyanka is on the air Mon-Fri only on 990 kHz; the
signal comes from north-west / south-east direction, that matches
Povarovo tx site, situated about 50 km north-west of Moscow. 73,
(Nick Pashkevich, Russia via Ludwig, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. From the WGN website http://www.wgnam.com :
SCOPES "MONKEY" TRIAL 75th ANNIVERSARY
In 1925, history was made in Dayton, Tennessee. Clarence Darrow faced
off against William Jennings Bryan in the Scopes "Monkey" Trial,
pitting the theories of evolution vs. creationism against each other.
The case was the basis of the film Inherit the Wind. This microphone
was used during the historic WGN Radio Broadcast of the Scopes
"Monkey" Trial in July, 1925. It is now on display at the
Smithsonian. Besides the legal significance of the arguments and the
outcome, there was also another historic element of the trail. WGN
Radio was in the courtroom to provide the first ever live broadcast
of a legal proceeding. Barely one year after signing on the air, WGN
brought the activities from the Rhea County Courthouse into homes
throughout mid-America. In 2000, this historic moment will be
commemorated with a recreation of the trial. And, WGN Radio will be
there again. John Williams will broadcast live from the courthouse in
Dayton on Friday, July 14. Tune in as the man who chats regularly
with Thomas Jefferson (and "Mr. President") brings another moment in
American history alive, in the way only he can. John Williams, live
from the 75th Anniversary recreation of the Scopes "Monkey" Trial,
Friday, July 14, at 3:00pm. [Show normally runs until 7 pm CDT; 2000-
2400 UT] (Glenn Hauser, swprograms, WORLD OF RADIO 1044, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)
** U S A. Diane Bish's "Joy of Music" was moved from Tuesday at 11 AM
Central to Monday at 11 AM Central (1600 UT) on TBN. It was a
surprise to me, and I only happened to find it by tuning the TV past
the local LPTV TBN station on ch 18 the other week. TBN are terrible
about giving out schedule info or announcing specials, etc. You have
to be on the mailing list and give money to find out anything, and,
when I was briefly on the non-paying mailing list, all I got was a
generic monthly sked with no notice of specials, pre-emptions for
telethons, etc. For some reason, they don't use the obvious method of
using inter-program time for sked announcements. They are NOT listed
in TV Guide or the Post-Dispatch TV skeds here in St. Louis, even
though they are on an over-the-air broadcaster! (Will Martin, MO,
July 12, DX LISTENING DIGEST) SW angle: also via KTBN 15590. Maybe in
St Louis Monday at 1600, but gist.com still shows something else July
17 at that time on TBN, with JOY only on Sunday at 0930 UT (gh) ###
