DX TEST DX TEST DX TEST DX TEST DX TEST DX TEST DX TEST DX TEST
This came from the AM Stereo E-group. WMIB-1660 will be testing the
morning of 7/2/00.
(St. Louis, MO) -- According to a story in the business section of
today's (6/23) St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a big radio deal has been struck
in the St. Louis market. Emmis Broadcasting, who had planned to buy the
entire Sinclair Broadcasting operation in St. Louis, is swapping four of
the stations. This comes as a result of the settlement of a lawsuit
Sinclair filed against Emmis, which was announced yesterday (6/22). The
deal is as follows:
1) Emmis will retain heritage Album Rock station KSHE (94.7 FM, "K-She
95") Crestwood, MO; Classic Hits KIHT (96.3 FM, "K-Hits") St. Louis, MO;
Classic Rock KXOK (97.1 FM, "The Rock") Florissant, MO; Active Rock
station WXTM (104.1 FM, "Extreme Radio") Jerseyville, IL; and Modern
Rock station KPNT (105.7 FM, "The Point") Ste. Genevieve, MO. Emmis will
also retain the rights to the Steve and D.C. morning show (currently on
WKKX-106.5). The two will most likely move to KPNT. Syndicated morning
shows are found on KSHE (Bob and Tom) and WXTM (Howard Stern), and
established personalities anchor the morning shows on the other stations
(Mark Klose on KIHT, Randy Raley on KXOK).
2) Sinclair will hold on to local ABC affiliate KDNL-30. They have a
lot of work to do, especially now that they're down to one daily
newscast.
3) Emmis will swap Adult Standards-formatted WRTH (1430 AM) and well-
established Country station WIL (92.3 FM) St. Louis, MO; Modern Adult
Contemporary station WVRV (101.1 FM, "The River") East St. Louis, IL;
and Hot Country station WKKX (106.5 FM-"Kix 106.5") Granite City, IL to
Bonneville Broadcasting for KZLA-93.9 Los Angeles, CA. Emmis also owns
KPWR-105.9 in L.A.
WKKX will have to vacate it's current studios at Union Station as a
result, ditto with WVRV near the Trans World Dome. KIHT, KXOK and KPNT
will most likely move in with either WXTM or KSHE at Union Station.
Problem is, only one more station can be accomodated at the current
WRTH/WIL facility in Brentwood, MO.
Bonneville will be the second highest-grossing group in the St. Louis
market, behind Infinity Broadcasting (KMOX-1120/KYKY-98.1/KEZK-102.5).
Clear Channel Communications (KATZ-1600/KSD-93.7/KATZ-FM 100.3/KLOU-
103.3/KMJM-104.9/KSLZ-107.7) would be third, and Emmis (KSHE/KIHT/KXOK/
WXTM/KPNT) would end up fourth in gross revenues in the St. Louis
market.

Long-time DXer Ernie Wesolowski of Omaha called me this afternoon with
the sad news that his mother had passed away on Sunday. She was the
victim of a sudden pneumonia flareup.
Many DXers knew Rose, as she sometimes traveled with Ernie to
conventions and other DXer gatherings.
At the time of her death she was 89.
If any of you care to send a card, Ernie's address is:
13312 Westwood Lane
Omaha, Nebraska 68144-3543

On Saturday afternoon (24 JUN) I had a little time to explore outer
Cape Cod looking for potential DXing sites with good ocean views for
other hobbies like photography and swimming. In the town of Eastham, I
came upon three locations that are part of the Cape Cod National
Seashore. Parking is permitted until midnight, good enough (even on the
longest days of the year) for Trans-Atlantic and Pan-American DXing
which is typically best in the first 3 hours after sunset.
The sites visited were:
Fort Hill Park - great view from an elevation of about 100' / 30 m above
sea level. You could probably string out some good wires here in autumn
/ winter.
Coast Guard Beach - somewhat crowded, and suited for car-roof antennas
only. Worth visiting in the off-season.
Nauset Light Beach - a bit roomier than the nearby Coast Guard Beach.
Not to be confused with Nauset Beach in Orleans to the south. This is
where I finally set up for a DX session from 2300 to 0200 UTC.
DX started out with a few Spaniards on the high end of the MW dial
(1602, 1575, etc.) and some surprisingly early (pre-sunset) Venezuelan
stations such as R.Barcelona-1080 over/under WTIC and R.Dos Mil-1500
over WFIF/WTOP. Earliest Trans-Atlantics were from the usual western end
of the Mediterranean area. UK, Germany, Slovakia, Croatia, Ireland,
etc. peaked up during the 0100-0130 UTC period. Brazil was heard with
good signals from Fortaleza on 690 and 760. Venezuelans were "all over
the place", at least between 600 and 1200 kHz. Off-frequency Carabobo
on 1039.6 was really booming in; demolishing the 1040 pack. Usual
Caribbean signals on splits (535, 555, 895) were all good. Early on,
ZDK-1100 was coming in with daytimer WHLI-NY nulled into the mud with
the loop/whip cardioid array. Overall, for a date so close to the
longest day of the year, there was a nice variety of DX from Europe,
North Africa, the Caribbean, and South America. Deep Africans were
sought but not found other than a hint of Angola-1502 (chewed up by
local-like Venezuela on 1500).
I'll be doing some other DXing over the next 2 weeks, then I'll take
the time to type up all the logs.
