**Pete Taylor - Tacoma WA - taytac@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

For those of you who reported KMON-560 during their DX in November
1998, or at other times since then, please be advised that CE Lete
Connolly E-mailed me yesterday that they "are off the design table,"
should be back from the printers Wednesday and in the mail by the
weekend.
And yes, as others have reported, KGHO-920 Olympia is off the air
(again). I have no idea what's going on over there but during the past
two years they have been off more than they have been on. I can't
imagine what the next format will be...

Yesterday (6/19), I was testing some antenna connections in our local
afternoon, around 3 pm MDT, when I was surprised to find CFUN coming in
quite well on 1410. Further checks revealed other Vancouver outlets on
1040, 1130, and 1470, and Seattle on 710 and 1000, as well as a few
other weaker signals from the Pacific Northwest. Although this is not
unusual in mid winter, it is very unusual for mid-June. Has anyone else
been noting anything like this?

**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

With the high sunspot count, cx here on the Oregon coast have been add
too. I have been getting a "whoosing" type sound off my Northern
Beverage, sounded a bit like the noise I get during extreme AU cx. Also
tonight, even though cx are still poor I have noticed quite a few
Canadian stations, CFFR-660 is totally local-like tonight without any
QRM. CKNL-560 was on top of KPQ tonight, better than I hear them in the
Winter often. CKDM-730 was good. After logging CKY-580, I was quite
surprised as I haven't logged them in many years. There was no KFXD most
of the night. I also heard CHQR-770 tonight. I rarely hear them in the
Summer. Yet CJDC-890 is weak. Fiqure that. Really sound odd cx.

I woke up at about 0200 the other night and couldn't go back to sleep.
I was listening to the radio and I stumbled across Radio Netherlands on
1010. I thought that it might be being rebroadcast by CRB. But this
went on for over 45 minutes with no ID. It finaly faded out. Does
anybody know who it was.

**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Yes, it was the CBC / CBR. They run that nightly. Also the CBC does not
always have local IDs on the hour either. Many times in the middle of
the night CBU-690 will just give a CBC ID, no CBU mention.

**Frank Aden - ID - n7sok@xxxxxxx

KAHU 1060 in Hilo is alive and well, and in Englsh... sort of. Usually
runs to at least 9:PM HST and often later wheh the mood strikes them.
They have been attempting to get a new 5 kw transmitter on the air but
so far it has been up to about 3 kw but most of the time they are still
1 kw. But, they get out faily well locally and are a nice little
Hawaiian Music Station. Sort of.

Keaau, Hawaii about 8 miles from the KAHU transmitter site.

**Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

They sure weren't putting much of a signal into Kihei or Maalea. They
were much weaker than any other Hawaiian station, even KKON, which is a
fair amount weaker then any of the Honolulu stations despite 5 KW non-
directional. I hardly noticed them when I was looking for KTCT, KNX or
DU's. Is it your experience that KKON gets out poorly? Which stations
from North America does you hear most consistently?
Is KNUI still all distorted? They were the entire two weeks I was
there, and was my closest local (along with KAOI) at around 2 miles. I
was at the south end of Kihei closer to Makena. I wasn't aware that KAOI
and the defunct KUAU diplex off KNUI until I got home. I photographed
both antennas (KNUI and KMVI); KNUI's is graced with an eight bay FM
(Jampro, I think) for KNUI-FM on 99.9. With about 22.22 KW out of the
transmitter and a gain of around 4.5 for the eight bays, KNUI-FM makes
100 KW ERP. They need it being at sea level.
Have you ever heard any of the Santa Barbara stations (my locals are
on 990, 1250, 1290, 1340, and 1490) over there? You'd probably have the
best shot at 1250, which gets out extremely well (their two towers are
in a salt marsh next to the beach and are graced on top with capacitive
hats, part of the reason they get out well) but has a pretty nasty null
in your direction. The towers are the originals from their sign-on in
1937. I'm surprised the salt environmental hasn't damaged them.

**Charles C Boehnke - HI - kale@xxxxxxxx

DX Conditions in Hawaii are very poor at this time. As an example at
5:AM this morning HST NOTHING other than locals were heard.
KKON 790 does not get out very well due to a poor ground system at
their transmiter site on a steep hillside in Kealakekua. KKON is part
of the "Big IsIand Radio" network and realys KIPA 620.
I always thought Maui's KUAU 1570 transmitter site was their tower in
Richard Miller's backyard in Haiku? At least it used to be. I was
unaware of any plans to co-site with KAOI 1110 and KNUI 900. KUAU may
be back on the air someday I'm told. Richard always touted KUAU as
having a good signal along the Hana Highway, which it did due to the
Haiku xmttr site. They did better in that direction than even KMVI-550
which is also sited on the north coast just inland from the Wailuku
shoreline whereas KUAU is a few miles eastward. Incidently, KUAU
orginally was called that for the town of Kuau where Richard orginally
wanted to put the transmitter. If by some miracle they ever get the
proposed 50 kw it would be from a site in the Kuau area.
Regarding KNUI 900, I have never noticed any distortion on their
signal recently, it is always clear evenings here in Keaau and I rather
enjoy their good format of modern and traditional Hawaiian music.
Unfortunately XEW can tear it up from time to time altnough not lately
due to the poor DX conditions.
Honolulu's new KBUG 1170 not yet on the air. Rumor has it that KHNL
will re-activate their 1600 cp.
Best mainland stations here at this time are KNX 1070, KTNQ 1020, and
KFAX 1100. Have heard Santa Barbara in the past, 1340 was best, but not
for several years. Best graveyarders here are San Diego's 1240 and
Berkeley's 1400.

Folks, A friend of mine recently removed the last "roof top" AM tower in
Indiana. Has some neat pictures at: http://UltimateGTO.com/whbu1240.htm

**Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Lee - great pictures; thanks for the link. We had a quarter wavelength
rooftop antenna here in Santa Barbara on 1340 until about ten years ago.
The ground system consisted of wires connected to a railing on the roof.
It actually got out quite well and was heard in New Zealand. They are
now diplexing (triplexing?) off a quarter wavelength on 1490 (along with
1290), and while it still covers the local area fine, it is no longer
commonly heard at night outside the local area.

Tim Hall - Chula Vista CA - halls@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Although XEJAZZ-540 is //KJAZ-1260 most of the time, they are starting
to produce some local programming on 540 and will likely have more and
more as time goes by. I have noted the two stations running separate
programming midday, but they have generally still been // at sunset,
sunrise, and at night.
So far, the music selection is pretty obscure, and I'd say local jazz
musicians are generally unimpressed with the new station. I don't think
KSDS-88.3 is going to lose too many listeners. I wouldn't be surprised
if this format were to change again later this year.

I've put together a Web page with text of some recent e-mail
discussions of phased antenna arrays. Much of the discussion revolves
around medium wave (500-2000 kHz) but may be applicable to longwave and
tropical band shortwave as well. Links to other information sources are
included.
The URL for this page is:
"http://members.aol.com/MarkWA1ION/phased_arrays.htm";
By the way, the July 2000 issue of QST magazine has a very good
article on Flag, Pennant, and Ewe antennas used on the 160-meter band.
