[HCDX]: Alberta DX session
As Joe Talbot alluded to in his posting, we Alberta DXers got together
last weekend at Lamont, northeast of Edmonton. Most of the listening was
on shortwave, but as medium wave is my number 1 area, I'll comment on that
band.
For the most part MW reception conditions were rather ordinary, with
none of the more difficult American X-band stations noted, and no really
unusual domestic stations logged. Did hear TIS outlers on 1610 from WA,ID,
and CO. Between 0430 and 0515 on 17 April we did have somewhat of a Trans
Atlantic opening. Heard heterodynes from numerous European stations in the
range between 1017 and 1197 khz. The only one that brought audio was 1107,
where I was able to hear time pips, and then a man speaking in Spanish,
with what sounded like news. The signal was very weak, but it sounded like
RNE, which we have heard previously on 1107.
The highlight on MW was definitely Argentina on 1630 khz, which we heard
both on the 16th from 0530 to past 0600, and on the 17th from 0730 to past
0800. Although at times interference from KCJJ was a problem, at other
times Argentina was virtually alone on the channel. KKWY, although audible
at times, was never a problem. Programming consisted of a program of
popular music (mostly in Spanish, but with some English language
songs),several promos for a newsmagazine promo, and also the ID as reported
earlier by Hermod Pederson, "1630 AM, desde la provincia de Buenos
Aires....". We also observed that the brief periods of auroral conditions
brought in Mexican signals over the usual Canadian and U.S stations on
1090,1200 and 1220 khz.
Neither the morning of the 16th or 17th produced any audio from the
Asia/Pacific region, though the 17th did have quite a number of
heterodynes, with 1098 and 1332 khz being the strongest.
