[HCDX]: DX183 Jan 2000
Hi list:
Last week I spent some days at Wilhelm Herbst's DX resort on Jutlands
NE coast and did some DX together with Christoph Mayer. I had not
expected any unusual catches as the A-indexes remained at around 3 all
the time.
Our experience was that each day was different with different sections
of the AM band offering TA reception.
03/04 JAN
Late opening in the evening around 2200 UTC with some usual stations
like 930 CJYQ / 800 VOWR / 1400 CBG and also 1375 RFO.
Morning started at 0630 with nearly every channel above 1360 occupied
by a NE CONUS station:
1130 WBBR / 1290 CHRM / 1360 WDRC / 1370 unid / 1390 WEGP / 1400 WOND
/ 1410 WPOP / 1430 WXKS / 1470 WZOU / 1480 WSAR / 1510.02 WNRB / 1520
The Great KB / 1560 WQEW / 1590 WSMN + 1 unid/ 1600 WUNR / 1610 Carib
Beacon / 1660 Unica / 1690 WMDM / 1700 WAFN
A rapid f/out at 0755 then some good signals in the lower part of the
spectrum: VOCM and its affiliates on 560/590/650/710 / 640 CBI / 800
VOWR, all f/out at around 0830
04/05 JAN
Almost the same opening as the evening before plus some Brazil on
1570.
During 0000-0400 530 Radio Vision / 560 CHVO / 580 CJFX / 590 VOCM /
620 CKCM / 650 CKGA / 710 WOR / 710 CHVO / 880 WABC / 850 WEEI / 1010
WINS. A nice catch also 216 Krasnojarsk // 5290.
'Switch-on' in the morning at 0700 UTC from 1500-1700 khz: good
signals from 1500 WTOP / 1560 WQEW / 1630 2 unids/ 1640 WKSH / 1660
Unica/ 1660 WQSN / 1680 2 unids. Fade out this morning 0720.
05/06 JAN
Regular fade in at 1950 with Nfld stations. Also 650 KNR from 1900 UTC
onwards. No propagation into US/Canada, so we went to bed.
The morning saw 650 KNR with massive signals, however NA remained poor
with New York's 770 and 880 running late until 0900 UTC. A very poor
day.
06/07 JAN
KNR 650 strong again as early as 1800 UTC. Very poor NA again but at
0100 UTC an opening towards Peru with 1470 CPN (tent. with sports) /
1500 R. Santa Rosa, Lima / 1510.7 Radio Alegria, Arequipa.
Later also Caribbean 530 / 830 St. Kitts with long fades / 1400 Car
Beacon / 1610.
>From 0430 an unexpected opening to the prairies with 930 CJCA 'The
Light' / 770 CHQR / 790 CFCW / 880 CHQT.
At around 0700 European splatter became weaker and revealed also 680
KBRW / 820 KCBF / 890 CJDC and 920 CFRY (the last two tentative only)
Very faint signals and fade out by 0800 UTC. A rather mixed night.
07/08 JAN
Nothing special again in the evening, very weak f/in at 2000 with the
usual Newfoundlanders. No signals at 2130/2200 so we took the sleep we
haven't had the night before.
A rather poor start in the morning with 930 CJYQ and 590 VOCM. At 0730
Nova Scotia with 640 CBI and 920 CJCH. Around 0800 some very faint
signals appeared on the upper part of the spectrum with 1120/1130/1140/
1290/1410/1470 which might have been signals from the West Coast also.
However, none came up so presumed only.
Summary: Well, this had not been a bad session.
However, here are a few differences when looking at the years before:
-Irregular fade ins
-Even a good fade in did not mean that stations from further West came
up, propagation often restricted to the extreme NE only.
-Fade out was earlier than the years before when we experienced good
signals until 0900/1000 UTC from the East Coast and Canada with some
late fade/in fade/out of stations until 1100 UTC.
-No Chicago/Mid-West stations, rather poor propagation 800-1400 khz.
-the station of the session may be KCBF but the most remarkable
propagation for me was the reception of the radio beacon 'LT' from CFS
Alert on 305 khz which was an all time catch during the hours of
darkness. Would be interesting to hear from Sheigra about that one.
