680 KKGR MT W. Helena. This station has some sort of special deal,
and as per phone call, operates with 5kw from 6-6 MST during the
winter. Not only that, it has changed formats from C&W to
oldies, as in "Good Time Oldies." The new owner (as of May), Ron
Davidson, was not aware of the Canadian syndication of the same
name. It was heard here 12/22 from 0815-0845 EST with non-stop
oldies, and then finally a "KGR" ID and some local ads (KNBR
looped, but all CA stations were weaker than usual). Mid-
Westerners and Westerners should give it a try. Ron is a
friendly guy who even returned my call. He is not DX-aware
(i.e., CJOB, KOMW and KNBR didn't mean anything to him) and runs
a printing shop. The station is self-formatted.
900 CJVI BC Victoria. This stations carries the 3-hour "Rona" talk
show (I have heard it around 10PM PST) but other than that
carries what they call the "Decades" format (music from the 60s-
80s). The music is produced at the station. They will switch to
FM during the summer/fall of 2000.
900 CKBI SK Prince Albert also produces its own music - which is
pretty much a blend of whatever they want (oldies, country,
whatever). Their closest AM competitor is CJVR-750 Melfort. CKBI
has one FM and is acquiring another.
My point with the last two is that neither carries the Canadian format,
Good Time Oldies. (So Blake Lawrence, you need something a little more
specific to identify what you heard).

DXpedition, but a few MW items noted below:
693 JAPAN, JOAB Tokyo, 0143 Dec 18. Male and female announcers with EE
lesson & JJ tk. NHK2 network noted parallels on 828, 774, and
747. Fair-gd. (Atkins)

later recheck of freq around 0820. (Atkins)
774 JAPAN, JOUB Akita, 1050-1105 Dec 19. Constant tk in JJ, with no
break or ID noted at ToH. Quite strong level most of the time,
and coming in equally well on K9AY and a 1000-ft. northwest
Beverage antenna. (Atkins)
1008 UNIDENTIFIED, 1430-1444 Dec 18 Russian lang. station peaking
briefly at 1438, fighting it out with presumed JONR Osaka.
Possibly Petropavlovsk? (Atkins)
1035 SOLOMON ISLANDS, SIBS, heard parallel 5020, 1058-1130 Dec 16,
exceptionally strong, time pips at ToH, ID by man thereafter,

shortwave parallel at the same time. (Nelson)
1467 FIJI, Radio Two, Rakiraki, 1554-1633 presumed Dec 19 with
continuous Hindi mx. Fair-gd signal; no break or ID noted around
1600. Hindi tk and woman announcer finally heard at 1633.

WELLBROOK K9AY ANTENNA: On my and Don Nelson's DXpedition to Grayland
WA, I used a K9AY for the first time. This particular K9AY is a
commercial version from Wellbrook Communications in the UK.
http://www.wellbrook.uk.com Wellbrook has only recently begun to sell
their various antennas to USA and Canadian customers. Their K9AY costs
140 GB Pounds, which was $230 US at time of purchase. Wellbrook includes
shipping in the price.
The total loop circumference is determined by the user; I sized this
K9AY as 86' loops.
For MW DX it performed admirably, and equaled the performance of
Beverage antennas at times. However, it was easy to miss a het or audio
on a split frequency because the controls need critical adjustment (i.e.
it's not a good antenna to use while scanning for hets between
domestics). There occasionally seems to be a slight reduction in
domestic channel splatter when using the K9AY for trans-Pacific MW DX
targets.
The K9AY's directionality--considering its size--is remarkable. Front-
to-back ratio of 30-40 db is typical, which is enough to completely
eliminate many co-channel stations on mediumwave.
An E-mail received from Andy Ikin of Wellbrook suggests that
bandscanning with the K9AY on mediumwave can be improved by
disconnecting the antenna from ground and turning the null control (pot)
fully clockwise. Alternatively, a relay controlled jumper could be used
to connect the ends of the loops, essentially turning the K9AY into a
omnidirectional longwire.
On shortwave, the K9AY is a low noise, omni-directional antenna, filling
in the gaps between the Beverages' coverage. For my afternoon/evening
Indian and African loggings, the K9AY was consistently the best antenna
(often the ONLY antenna hearing the DX). "On target" Beverages, such as
those we aimed due west for Papua New Guinea, always gave clearer
signals on PNGs than the K9AY. It's tough to beat looking "down the
barrel" with a Beverage antenna!
I used a fiberglass telescoping mast from German amateur DK9SQ to
support the K9AY. It extends to approx. 33 feet, but I only used 26.5 ft
of the height for the antenna. Further information on the DK9SQ mast and
pricing can be found at: http://www.bright.net/~kanga/kanga/dk9sq.htm
Wellbrook supplies the interface box (attached to mast), approx. 100 ft.
of 2-conductor wire for loop selection, and the control box which sits
at the DXer's operating position. The DXer supplies a 12vdc regulated
linear power supply or battery (300ma draw), coax (50 or 75 ohm will
work) between the interface and control boxes, loop wire, a supporting
mast or other structure, and miscellaneous hardware as needed to
complete the K9AY. Clear, detailed instructions are provided by
Wellbrook Communications.
The features that distinguish Wellbrook's K9AY from the basic K9AY that
can be homebrewed are variable loop termination for optimized nulls and
a "magnetic" matching transformer to help reduce noise pickup. Further
information on the K9AY is found on Wellbrook's website.
Any reader of the AM DX NewsFlash who would like to receive emailed
photos of the Wellbrook K9AY and a Realaudio demo clip should contact me
at dxing@xxxxxxxxxxx . The Realaudio clip compares directionality and
sensitivity of the antenna to a 1000 ft. Beverage on 774 kHz JOUB,
Akita, Japan.

I heard a radio program recently and in the back ground behind the two
people talking was a tape of a radio station made in the early 1950's.
I think that the call was WBIA, it was hard to hear. If the call is
wrong I know that station was in Cleveland. Does anyone know if there
is an archive of old tapes of stations from that era?
