[HCDX]: DXA DX-Weekend 26, 27, 28 nov 99

Here are some impressions about the latest DX-Weekend organized by
DX-Antwerp, Belgium.
Last Friday, November the 26nd, fourteen members of DXA found their way to a
bungalow park 'Hoge Rielen' in Kasterlee, some seven Km south of Turnhout.
It is not a bungalow park like there are many here in Western Europe with
small cottages packed near each other. No, there is no subtropic swimming
pool ;-)
It's a park that is in fact intended for youth groups with larger pavilions
located at several hundreds of meters from each other in a pinewood area.
Friday morning we were busy putting up the antennas. Since it is the fourth
time, we are at this location this job was fixed without serious problems.
Following antennas were erected :
Beverages :
500 m 305° toward NAm East coast rolled out on the surface.
400 m 35° toward SeAs rolled out on the surface.
300 m 275° toward CAm on abandoned telephone poles.
10 m vertical with radials
Longwire 80 m E-W distributed via R&S splitters into 6 receivers
Longwire 80 m N-S distributed via R&S splitters into 6 receivers
Longwire 85 m N-S
Longwire 120 m with radials
Longwire 40 m with radials
T2FD
Terminated loop 5 MHz.
Open dipole for 10 meters
Open dipole for 16 meters
Furthermore we used a lot of SP-1 splitters. Unfortunately the R&S
splitters are blocking the MW signals, so they couldn't be used to
distribute the beverage signals.
The interest groups were equally divided into 7 Broadcast DXers and 7
Utility freaks. All our antennas were fed via coaxial cable. In fact we
couldn't trace any mutual interference from the PC's. Unfortunately we
discovered some interference on some frequencies caused by a refrigerator.
As in the previous years we didn't manage to tune out backward stations on
the beverage antennas by turning the 1K pot. This was both the case with
the beverages on the ground and the one on telephone poles.
Finally, we had luck with the A and K indices dropping to low levels during
the weekend. The previous years we had always bad luck. But now the solar
index is high.
Some highlights are reception of Vanuatu, tentative Solomon logging, special
WMIB test, SSTV station from Senegal with excellent pictures.
