COSTA RICA- Publishing new program schedule has been delayed because of
some changes almost every week. The latest: For rest of quarter [thru
Nov??] Spiritu Sanctus, ``angelic music'' and commentary is on Sundays
at 2030-2200, displacing James Bean's Spiritual Awakening to 1700 on
Sundays, and at 1730 One World, One People, the show of the CR Baha'i'.
These in turn displace Alternative Radio to new time of Sat 2100, along
with Wed 1600 plus the usual repeats. This also means SpAw gets repeat
at 0100 UT Mon where confirmed, instead of 0500. On <

CZECH REPUBLIC- I'm looking forward to listening to Prague at 1400 on

this broadcast has provided the best reception of Radio Prague. (Ivan

GREECE- Dear Glenn, It has been quite a while since my last letter to
you, but nothing fantastic has been going on at the Voice of Greece
that I have been aware of. In addition to their SW transmitters in Avlis
and Kavala, Greece, VOG is also using the VOA's 250-kW transmitters in
Delano and Greenville, to the Americas and the Pacific area via
satellite. Even the VOG is using the Internet for RealAudio at
http://ert.ntua.gr plus powerful 500-kW mediumwave transmitters on 792
in Kavala and 1260 in Rhodes; also regional AM and FM stations in many
parts of Greece. Who knows when they are going to install those
VOA-donated 250-kW ex-Portugal transmitters in Avlis and Thessaliniki,
Greece. I imagine that Dionisios Angelogiannis is still looking for
money for their installation and it has been quite a while since I last
heard from him. On June 29, Demetri Vafeas sent me the following letter
with two print-outs: ``I am enclosing material related to VOG that I got
from the Internet. I hope you will find it useful. I am very
disappointed lately since things are moving very slowly, I am involved
in a number of different things but I am not efficient(?) as in the
past. I wish you to be in good health and I will get back to you soon.''
He sent me 2 print-outs from http://ert.ntua.gr/eng/aristera.htm and
http://ert.ntua.gr/eng/deksiakatw.htm Demetri also sent me the SW
transmission schedule of two pages with 12 listings of their coverage
areas, from http://ert.ntua.gr/eng/era5eng/index.htm From my monitoring
of VOG, these are the present News in English segments: Daily exc Sat
and Sun to Eu, NAm 0300-0310 on 7450 9420 11645 12105 Daily to Eu and
NAm 1410-1420 on 9425 15630 Eu, N&SAm 1800-1815 on 7450, 9425, 17705,
17765 On Sundays only, VOG has an hour-long musical broadcast in
English, ||It|s All Greek to Me|| with George Anastakis(?) 1900-2000 on
7450, 9425, 17705, 17765. Today|s broadcast featured the story of
||rembetes|| (Greek rebels of the 1930s who were similar to our
hippies, smoking marijuana, etc.) From their era came the Rembetiko
songs you have have heard on VOG. This program is repeated about 2 hours
later to Australia 2110-2205 on 9425, 11645. Based on last year|s time
change, I am projecting the change in frequencies on Oct 31 as follows:
0300-0310 7450, 7475, 9375, 9420 --- 1510-1520 7450 9425 --- 1800-1815
7450 9425 15485 17705 --- 1900-2000 7450 9425 15485 17705 --- 2110-2205
7475 9425. (John Babbis, Silver Spring, MD, Oct 17, REVIEW OF

GUATEMALA- New station: R. Ixcan, Ixcan, operated by United Nations. Is
active on FM and AM band; they plan also SW. The Venezia town headmaster
relationship international Mrs Franca Bimbi, has informed of this
project of broadcasting in Guatemala (Play-DX Sept 27 via P-mail/ GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20) --- This could be an example of Dario
Monferini's wacky sense of humor; my notoriously undetailed atlas does
not list any place called Ixcan, FWIW (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20) ---
Glenn, in Guatemala there is the town of Ixcanante...may be is it ??

Wolfgang Bueschel) --- That is the transmission which Joe Hanlon
discovered on 13725 at present, likely same site. Remains to be seen
which will actually be used for B, as this sked still has DL on 6185,
not 6135, a late change, no doubt (Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1008/ GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
MAURITANIA- R. Mauritania, 4817.5v, Oct 16 0000-0103*, Arabic talk and
music, Koran. S/off with short 40 second anthem. Drifted down to
4817.22 by s/off. Way off nominal 4845. Also heard Oct 10 at 0101* on

SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-47, Oct 25 )
MEXICO- I listened to/taped the two nighttime airings of XEOI Encuentro
DX UT Sun 0130, UT Mon 0200 Oct 17-18, with poor to fair reception on
6010. Julian and Hector were conversing most of the time, played some
music, frequent ||Es Radio Mil|| jingles. Some SWBC DX tips, schedules
for RN, RAI, WRMI, BBC, Taipei; ham nets, QSL Radial to someone in
Michoacan. I wonder if there will be a different show each week for the
rest of these October tests? (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
NETHERLANDS- You have one more week, Oct 24-25, to hear and special -QSL
the Estacion de la Alegria despedida series on RN in Spanish. I noticed
the exact start time on the 0230 UT Monday broadcast on 9590 and 6165
was 0236:30 (Guillermo Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
NEW ZEALAND- There was NO Mailbox on RNZI as expected UT Thu Oct 14 at
0307 on 17675, but some other program. Nor did Mailbox appear at 0334
instead as happened once before. Has the fortnightly cycle shifted, or a
screwup? DST confusion? (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
NEW ZEALAND- Hi Glenn, This from Adrian Sainsbury... Mailbox plays
September to March at 1505 NZDT which is 0205 UTC. I will get our web
page to clearly show the change. Adrian< (via Paul Ormandy / GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-47, Oct 25) --- Referring to UT Thursday on
17675, ex-0305 fortnightly including Oct 28. Website now shows 0205, but
no change in the times of the other airings, such as Monday 2135. Last
summer they did not make such a DST shift (Hauser, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-47, Oct 25)
NORWAY- Meine Anfrage heute per eMail in Norwegen - ob der KW Sender
"Ukesender'n 1999 radio station of the Student Festival in Trondheim" on
the Air ist: Dear Hans-Joachim. We are having some technical problems
with the SW and MW. I can say that a driver for the Power Amplifier
'let out it's smoke'. At the moment there is an ad hoc solution to the
problem, which is not very good. The station runs with 200W at the
moment, but we hope to be transmitting the full 1000W we are licensed
to by the end of the day. The people who work with Ukesenderen went to
the students "review" last night, it was really fun. Looking forward to
lots of concerts and other theatre-acts and all sorts of fun. Eivind L.

NORWAY- Ayumu Ohta is the full name of the new R. Norway frequency
manager... Olav Grimdalen tells me he is at work in the office of NTA in
Oslo, preparing to take the reins of Olav's position. You can give my
e-mail address some PR for next week's show if you like. I'm open to
anything and would take any correspondence. This is nice since I have
not been on the 'net in nearly five years until just this past Friday.
(I used Prodigy back then, in 1994.) Frequency management issues from
listeners would be welcome. (Joe Hanlon, PA, < joeswl@xxxxxx > via WORLD
OF RADIO 1008/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
PAKISTAN- [non?]. Further checks at 1400 on 15170: Oct 14 after Spain
closed around 1401, found music, and at 1410 definitely French, so
probably not R. Pakistan (Hauser / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-45, Oct 15)
PAKISTAN- Some observations on Radio Pakistan today: As mentioned on
Media Network news in English noted 0800 on 17835 but weak and studio to
transmitter link went off a couple of times, did not check whether 15530
was on at that time. News in English noted 1100-1105 on 15530 and
17835, both very good levels. This was followed by news in Baluchi and
sign off 1112. Checked 11570 for 1400 English news as mentioned by Glenn
Hauser, strong signals but news was in Urdu. The 1600-1615 news in
English followed by news commentary is still on, noted today with strong
signals on 11570 and 15465, weak on 15320. 1700-1900 World Service
confirmed on 11570 and 15335, again strong signals, news bulletins at
1700 and 1800 were both in presumed Urdu. (Mike Barraclough, Letchworth,
UK, October 16, WORLD OF RADIO 1008/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct
20)
PERU- Glenn, I am hearing R. Union, 6115, announcing "Tierra Fecunda"
daily at 1000 UT, saying it is a 60-minute program. I haven't heard much
music, mostly info talk. (John Cobb, Roswell, GA, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL ROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20) Hum,
may well be that music is not the main point of the show, just relief
and fill (Hauser/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
PIRATE EUROPE- Heard these stations. No IDs, but stations listed in
SRSNews: 6260.16 Station Siera Siera, 0710, Just bits of audio. 6210
EMR, 0712-0727 6199.72 Ozone/BBMS/GMR, 0727 6229 Jolly Roger R.,
0710-0811, Pops by Bryan Adams, etc, Man announcer. 6243 Fresh Air 2000,
0710-0750, Pop music, man announcer. (Valko, USA 10 Oct.)
ST HELENA- Started checking 11092.5 USB for RSH a bit before 1900 Oct 23
(no pirates noticed but was not monitoring constantly in hour before),
but did not start to fade in here until about 2020. Better by 2040, and
quite listenable after 2100. Some program notes: 2120 message from
postmistress; 2130 French ID, greeting in English from Jorge Garcia
Rangel, Club Diexistas de la Amistad, Barinas, Venezuela, and brief
return greeting in Spanish; 2137 Mahendra Vaghjee, John Ekwall; 2142
Swedish (?); 2153 said they had got 305 reports in 1998. 2210 Bill
Hassig call; 2220 list of 3 questions for competition; 2228 said had got
380 E-mails so far; 2235 Rich McVicar call; 2240 George Thurman call.
Ran late until 2315 epilogue, 2318 GSTQ to 2319* A brief ID tape will be
included on WORLD OF RADIO 1009 (Glenn Hauser, OK, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-47, Oct 25)
U K O G B A N I- A reminder, this Thursday, Oct 21, at 0530 & 2230,
Paul McCartney's Routes of Rock begins on BBC WS. (Ivan Grishin, REVIEW
OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
U K O G B A N I- BBC|s new 6135 from Delano is not yet running full 3
hours as B-99 scheduled from 0200; that is because 6135 is already used
by some other BBC site for Portuguese to Africa at 0430. WS Goes off at
0400? (Glenn Hauser, EVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
U K O G B A N I- With depressed MUF, 15220 Antigua was not making it
during 1130-1200 Fri Oct 22 Focus on Faith, so I was making do with 5965
Canada, which with later sunrises is holding up better but hardly ideal.
Closing at 1158 referred us to 9515, 15220 and 17840! -- But the last
would not come on for another two hours. Will BBCWS ever get its
continuity straight?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING)
USA / ALASKA- [non]. One frequency has changed for the Oct 16 test of
KNLS via St. Petersburg, Russia: 9480 instead of 11975 at 1400-1500
(Mikhail Timofehev / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-45, Oct 15 )
U S A- Tuning around at 0501 UT Sat Oct 16 I was startled to hear the
Star Spangled Banner on 11950. One of my pet peeves has been that none
of all the private (or public) US SW stations ever broadcast our NA, and
you hardly ever hear it on MW either, as most stations never sign off
and those that do not operate 24h do not bother. Presumably this was
WINB. At 0501 was an ID for Heritage Broadcasting System, satellite
channel info, and 0503 into a typical paranoid show called Y2K News
Radio, talking vaguely about having come back on the air with a new
arrangement (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 1008/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
99-46, Oct 20)
U S A- I hear that Dave Frantz| latest bright idea is to start
independent sideband broadcasting on WGTG, i.e. different programs at
the same time on upper and lower. Trouble is, he is pushing the YB-400
receiver, which cannot discriminate between them! BTW I checked his
12170 Oct 13 afternoon, and with the ATS-909 which does select lower or
upper sideband, I could still hear considerable audio from the upper
when tuned to the lower, so his suppression of LSB is not very good
(Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-46, Oct 20)
U S A- Glenn, fyi this date received a short note from Marty, WB2FYF, a
Spectrum Show producer (UT Sun 0306 to 0400 WWCR 5070) mentioning they
are going to have a listener appreciation night the last Saturday
10/30/99 (ut Sun) of this month that may determine whether or not they
stay on the air and they are hoping people will listen in and let them
know if they are out there. Anyone who has followed this show for the
last 6 or 7 years has noted recently - in its newest incarnation - there
have been some technical through morale problems. I personally hope they
manage to stay on the air one way or another as I have enjoyed the
program as part of the Saturday night (central N. America) lineup of
DX/Radio related programs. I did like it a bit better when it was on an
hour earlier but the current Communications World, World of Radio,
Spectrum, DXer's Ultd. etc. sched during that evening of the week is
pretty enjoyable. I have many times encouraged them to concentrate on
swl and try to get you back on as a guest. (LeRoy Long, OK, Oct 19,
REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING SHORTWAVE / GH DX REPORT 99-47, Oct

U S A- Been checking regularly for WRMI on 7465 in the early evening
hours prior to 0330 but have only heard them that one time, Sept 26 at
0025+. Definitely had an ID at that time. And I remember checking 9955
and hearing nothing except the jammer (Brian Alexander, PA, Oct 16 / GH
DX REPORT 99-47, Oct 25) But from Oct 31, R. Prague expects to be
relayed on 7465 for 0300 Spanish, 0330 Czech, 0400 English (Hauser,
