**Tom Bryant - Nashville, TN - TJBdx@xxxxxxxx

I just got back to Nashville after 3 weeks in MN and ND, and was
interested to note KXMR with an excellent signal in Fergus Falls, MN on
August 13 (mid-afternoon). While I didn't do any nighttime driving
outside the Bismarck area, the signal was solid everywhere in town with
no trace of QRM.

About halfway through my 10 day stay in Bismarck, KXMR disappeared and
never returned. I no longer have connections with the station, and
didn't try to get answers from anyone else.

Very strange.

My guess is that their pattern still isn't correct. According to their
projected contour map they should NOT be as strong in E. Central
Minnesota as they were.

***

**Pete Taylor - Tacoma WA - taytac@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tom, I was in Brainerd (Nisswa) MN 8/6 & 7 and there was no sign of KXMR
- all WDSM during the day (I didn't get a chance to check it at night).
I was specifically looking fot it and was surprised to find not even a
trace under WDSM.

***

**Nigel Pimblett - Medicine Hat AB - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

The verie letter from CE Dennis Wilson at KXMR for a reception on
July 11th stated that their daytime power of 50kW was directed mainly to
the NW. (Which would agree with Tom Bryant's remarks about them being
unexpectedly strong in MN) They then reduced power to 13 kW for two
hours prior to sunset (and also 2 hours after sunrise), before switching
to their night time site with 4 kW for the overnight hours. Daytime
site is 10 miles east of Bismarck on I-94 and Night time site is 18
miles south of Mandan on Highway 1806.
He also stated that the programming I heard (country, // 94.5 FM) was
only a temporatry fill in for the test period, and they'd have a new
format at the official sign-on.

G'Day from across the pond.
Phil Beckman CE of WMIB is doing another test of the 10Kw rig from
midnight EDT on Sept 12th. WMIB freq ios 1660kHz X Band. I asked him for
more lead time as last time there was only 20 hours notice. Reports
should go to: mrradioguy@xxxxxxxxxx

His message is as follows :

"Greetings to you of the down under l-o-n-g wire! I will be crankin'
WMIB up to 10kw in the wee hours of September 12, probably starting
right at midnight EDT. Sorry for the short notice last time
(procrastination).
Hope this is a better lead time!

Phil

Oh... I did get responses from the last test, but all Stateside. Texas,
Mississippi and Virginia. We have also received reports from Sweden and
Italy over the last few weeks. Love that expanded band!"

The owners of KCTE will buy WHB for $8 million, pending FCC approval.
KCTE's sports format will move to WHB by Oct. 1. No word on where WHB's
successful country/agriculture format will go.

Russell - ak473@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

per Flint Journal article, 1160 Fenton MI WWON is "defunct". It got FCC
permission to close in March due to money problems. It has been sold to
a Southfield MI group which places ethnic shows on WNZK. Station will
likely be moved closer to Detroit, and air ethnic programs. This
confirms my monitoring of their absence.

KAXY-1660 Waco, Texas is on the air. They are doing a high School
football game. Not wanting to give away too much "DX Information", I
won't give the teams. They are booming in here (at only 106 miles).

There is a good chance they'll keep the 10 kW transmitter on all night
for a couple of nights, at least.

**Craig Rathbone - Denver CO - DXer@xxxxxxx

I tried about 0200 EDT to hear Waco here in Denver but couldnt hear
them at all. KXOL sounds like they are 50,000 watts here. But even in
the little null I can get on KXOL I still didnt hear the Waco station.
KKWY 1630 in Cheyenne was very strong here this morning at 0730 EDT
9/4 The strongest I have ever heard them playing C&W and a "KWY"
slogans.

As a follow up to Pat Martin's posting on this, I talked with Jim Dahl,
CE of KGNW/KLFE/KKOL/1680 and he says there is not even a transmitter
yet for 1680 because of problems with real estate negotions. The same
problem applies to KKOL's CP for its power increase. If they get their
way, they will triplex 1300 1590 & 1680.

Here at the Secret Mountain Laboratory I was siting outside last evening
watching the sun go down and listening on 1700 as the gray line passed
over me. I heard snatches of a "Sports Radio" with some frequency after
those words. This morning I can't remember if it was 1310 or 1030. Has
anyone got any thoughts on this one.

At times here in Denver I have heard 850 KOA very strong on 1700. And
sometimes they use the words "sports radio KOA" or "sports radio 850" in
one of their many slogans.

**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Sports on 1700, That is Dallas, TX!

***

**Charles A. Taylor - calltaylor@xxxxxxxxxxx

If that's a question, the answer is 2x850=1700. Two KOAs = 1700.

Since there is some confusion here, let me clarify a few formats, since
I have programmed all of the main types:

Tejano is not A/C. It is like country to latter generation Mexican
Americans, and is not a Mexican music form. It's a mix of norteña and
country. Basically only played in Texas. A dying artform. Ratings of
tejano staitons are all off everywhere. Many tejano stations have
bilingual announcing or all English announcing, like KXTN-107.5 in San
Antonio and KHCK-99.1 in Dallas.

"Regional Mexican" is the US denomination for the folk/country music of
mexico: Banda, with the German Un-pah sound, norteña with the accordeon,
ranchera (called mariachi... however, a mariachi is a band that plays
ranchera) and cumbia (a colombian tropical beat adopted and modified by
Mexico). In Mexico, some stations specialize in only one of these
genres. In the US, they are almost always mixed. www.lanueva1019.com is
LAs #1 station with regional... MS Media audio.

Spanish A/C is a format that sounds in melody and arrangements just like
US AC. Balads, strings, crooners and groups. Ricky Martin became pop
after being basically A/C for some time. www.klve.com is LA's #2 station
and the biggist Spanish A/C. Audio on the site

Spanish pop: techno and dance and light rock. www.superestrella.com is
LAs KSSE. Audio sometimes works

Tropical: percussive dance music of the Caribbean, salsa and merengue.
www.salsoul.com or www.lamega.com. San Juan #1 station and NYC #4 with
audio.

Nostalgia: old ranchera and string trio songs... only real one in US is
KKHJ 930 in LA, which is mostly old ranchera. WFBA-990 in Miami was a
soft nostalgia, with instrumentals and trio songs, but it is now Disney.
1280 in Monterrey is the classic Mexican nostalgia, Radio Recuerdo.

Also, try Spanish news/talk, www.ktnq.com for LA's talk leader.

http://www.bdsonline.com/scripts/latin.asp?format=SP has a list of the
Spanish stations that Billboard MAgazine monitors to do its charts and
identifies the format of each. This may help ID some AMs and understand
the formats better. I have oversimplified, as there are many variants
and hybrids, especially in large markets in Mexico, Puerto Rico and
Latin America.

Have any of you tried a Kenwood TS-570 for MW DXing? I'm going to go for
my ham license, and the TS-570DG seems to offer excellent value for the
money. The '99 WRTH says the receiver section is good for DXing but
doesn't specifically address MW.

I was at my local Radio Shack on Friday and saw that they are now
selling an AM loop antenna. It is enclosed in a black plastic hoop
about 10"" in diameter with a tuning knob at one end of the base. It
could get a lot of people interested in AM DXing.

The part number is 15-1853 and the price is $29.99. In the 2000 catalog
(page 187), the tuning range is given as 530 to 1600 kHz, but the box at
the store says 535 to 1700. The loop has an output jack.
