Suspect that you heard CBC Vancouver. On Saturday night (local time) they
have a blues music program around taht time called, not surprisingly
"Saturday Night Blues". The host of this program was (and is suspect still
is Holger Peterson from Edmonton, Alberta) and Edmonton has a new 780 area
code. Newfoundland would be into the CBC Overnight service at this time.

It all fits!
