The ABA is about to release it's draft LAP for Sydney (analog). In it
they will be calling for submissions from interested parties about :
1. Higher power for the AM commercial stations (from 5Kw to 10Kw).
2. Day night switching.
Also the commercial stations are expected to advise the ABA for special
testing requirements to run 10Kw in anticipation of the higher power
outcome.
Sydney is the next cab of the rank for the planning process then
Melbourne. Most of the ABA's resources are being channeled into digital
though (mainly digital TV). The minister for communications has
announced that there is a sunset clause for analog broadcasting which is
to be 2021. The way things are moving in the broadcasting technology
business there may very well be no analog receivers around by 2021
though.
It is understood that a number of Sydney's AM'ers are already running
10Kw at this time.

Here in Mesa, AZ there is a S9 open carrier right now at about 2225
Arizona local time. {PDT}
Who is this guy that shows up from time to time with such a huge OC?
***
**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
I am getting an OC on 1630 KHZ also. Def coming from the South/
Southwest. Since Clovis CA is not coming on until 2000+, it must be XEUT
Testing. No audio as yet. Off the Eastern Beverage, KCJJ is mixing with
them. About S9 here on the Oregon coast.
***
**Ralph Sanserino - sanser@xxxxxxx
Big OC on 1630 at 0430 PDT here in Perris CA.....Ralph
***
**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
The OC has been there AN. It is about S9+10 DB on the 40 foot vertical.
It has to be XEUT-TJ. I wonder if they will s/on today? No audio anytime
I checked throughout the night.
It has to be XEUT-The University station that Tim Hall reported testing
a few months back. Heard with OC AN, then after 0600 PDT I heard Jazz
music with SS vocals, otherwise Inst, until it faded out about 0630 PDT
(LSR). Mo anmts though.
1630 UNID Station running OC all night as S9+10 DB signal. Then after
0600 PDT, s/on with non-stop Jazz music with some SS vocals. No
anmts. (8/17/99). The pattern and format matches XEUT-Tijuana
that Tim Hall reported a couple months back. Anyone got a QSL
address?
***
Rick Lewis - ricklew@xxxxxxxxxxxx
There were times last night when they were much weaker, as if power were
lowered, but I never heard them drop carrier. So I guess tonight's the
night we'll see how powerful a punch they pack after sunset.
But there were a few occasions when I'd estimate on my mental "guess-
meter" that they were about S5 and faded from there, so maybe there's
hope. (I have heard a few stations which don't drop carrier when
powering up and down, especially if pattern doesn't change. I did get
KCJJ under them last night, but it wasn't easy, and of course, XEUT had
no modulation.
***
**Pete Taylor - taytac@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
XEUT Presumed. Blasting in here too with OC at 0230 8/17. Makes KGXL
like Wimpsville. But don't worry everybody - we know they'll cut to 1kw
nights when they get on RS...
They should change their calls to XEIYF (in your face) or XECTC (coast
to coast).

**Ralph Sanserino - sanser@xxxxxxx

DX and Equipment tests:
----------------------
1240 WIBU WI, Poynette 8/2 2300 Local station was running OC after
10pm local time. Was running C&W music and going on and off the
air for several hours. Later ran a promo for job opportunities
at Magnum Group radio stations WIBU, WNNO, WBLS(?), and WBKY(?).
(TRH-WI)
UNIDs:
-----
1230 8/3 0005 UNID Sign-off sounded like "WCRV-AM operates on an
assigned frequency of 1230 kHz...". After they went off I had
one station with Jim Bohannon and another with Irish-influenced
C&W that looped NW/SE. (TRH-WI)
1230 8/3 0058 "WLLB(?), the music of _____, 12 in a row." into long
set of C&W music. Probably WLLR per local DXers, but if so I
sure botched the last letter. (TRH-WI)
1230 8/3 0200 "News Radio 12-30, WCUZ-WZLA(?)" into news. Is Grand
Rapids, MI back to these calls? Noted at least 5 ststions on
1230 at this time: Jim Bohannon; Art Bell; C&W; early 60s oldies;
and ESPN Radio sports talk. (TRH-WI)
1230 8/6 0357 Mexican music, ID as "La Zeta." I know Portland gets
out but this seems a bit far. (TRH-CO)
1230 8/5 0103 CNN news, "This is KNS(?) radio news." (TRH-TX)
1240 8/6 0200 Mentioned "South Central Valley... Colorado" around what
probably was an ID that faded out. (TRH-CO)
1240 8/6 0647 ID sounded like "KMOX". Probably either KSOX-TX or
KXOX-TX, either of which would have been a very nice catch.
(TRH-CO)
1240 8/6 0811 Classical music station, appeared to loop N/S. (TRH-CO)
1340 8/5 0825 "KRKN(?)-FM" into Gospel program. (TRH-TX)
1400 8/3 0639 UNID with rock oldies (Stevie Nicks), announcer said
"Rock 97.3, Stevie Nicks..." into ad for "Dial 00". (TRH-WI)
1400 8/5 0040 "KDRQ(?) weather brought to you by _____ in
Creedmore(?)." (TRH-TX)
1450 8/3 0000 UNID w/Star Spangled Banner and off. Appeared to loop
N/S. (TRH-WI)
1490 8/4 0459 ID sounded like "K_LL, Clear Lake." Mason City is close
to a Clear Lake but the calls aren;t close. (TRH-MO)
1490 8/5 0815 "Here on AM 14 hundred, KBL(?)." Note announcer
appeared to say "14 hundred" as opposed to "14-90". (TRH-TX)
1600 8/3 1904 CBS news, "AM 16 hundred, WRPO(?), we're talking _____."
Maybe a call change for WCWC? (TRH-WI)
TIS and other:
-------------
530 WPLX284 CO, exact location unknown. 8/6 0007 Odd message "WPLX284
is a service if the CO Department of Transportation. If you
receive this broadcast on your telephone(!), please call
303-757-728 and explain the difficulty to the person on duty.

530 HAR WI, exact location unknown. 8/3 0015 WI DoT HAR was in all
night talking about Highway 39(?) road work from the I-90/94
interchange to the US-51 interchange, and some additional
construction on US-51. (TRH-WI)
540 TIS CO, Denver 8/5 2050 Airport TIS noted with fair signals at
the airport (easily nulled even when I was near it). No HAR
stations were noted on 530 kHz in the car between the airport and
Englewood, but plenty of signs. (TRH-CO)
690 WPIW244 TX, Farmers Branch 8/5 0834 Fair with recorded
(synthesized?) snippets of weather for surrounding towns.
Listred calls are WPIW244, but uses "WPIW AM 6-90" in tape loop.

Electrical noise was not bad on this trip, especially given I was
staying in hotels with lots of air conditioners and fluorescent lights.
My rooms in MO and CO had balconies, which helped a bit. Signals in
general were not as strong as I might have expected (I mostly DX
graveyard and TIS channels these days). I did notice the St. Louis area
had outstanding reception of many clear-channel stations. Really put me
in mind of the days when the clear channels were still clear...
Apologies to DXers in the cities I visited for not contacting any of
you. I was in each city one day, flying each evening to the next city
for a dinner meeting, so I didn't even start DXing most nights until
about 11pm.

1700 UNID Noted 1010 8/7 with "On the Road Again" by Chet Atkins. It
either went off or simply faded out very quickly and I couldn't
tell if the carrier went off with it. Some IA LW stations
(beacons) came in during the day so it could have been KBGG, but
seems a little out of character. Is there an as-yet inactive CP
in MN WI ND or SD on 1700 which I don't have a record of?

I have a (crude) web site dedicated to the Graveyard DX Records. All
the GY lists are posted, even the pre-1960 records which never see print
in DX News.
As it's a fun thing for me to do, I'm also posting (various) directional
pattern plots, as space allows. Take a few minutes for a visit.

As long as we're talking RFI, I thought I'd mention my latest RFI
source - the cable modem that TCI put in for high speed internet access.
It puts out a loud 1 pulse/second burst superimposed over a strong buzz.
Since my computer is in the shack, it's very noticeable. In fact it's
loud enough to wipe out my 50 kw locals if the radio is next to the
modem or the first couple feet of coax. I'm tempted to hook my o'scope
to the modem just to see how what sort of signal it's sending back to
TCI's headend.
The easy fix to the problem is to turn it off when I want to listen
to the radio. The service is well worth the $40 it costs, but don't
plan on web surfing and DXing at the same time. (And pray that your
neighbor doesn't sign up for it and leave the modem on all night)

You can begin to locate the source of your "buzz" RFI by using a
portable SW tuned to the highest frequency band that will hear the
noise, and following the noise along the distribution line till the
noise peaks up. As you approach the source of the noise, it should
become more intense on higher frequency bands.
Following the noise along a distribution line, you'll probably find that
noise peaks up more than one place on the line...for example, at ground
downconductors on poles. At higher frequencies, RFI becomes more
localized.

I've been following this discussion with great interest, as I seem to
have all kinds of DX-preventing RFI around my house. A few years ago,
the power company was the culprit - but God (via a lightning strike
somewhere) took care of that problem. But I can't depend upon Divine
Intervention for all my QRM problems. I've determined that some of the
noise, at least, comes into the house via the cable TV lines. Is there
anything I can do, perhaps to ground the line, without trying to deal
with the cable TV company? I literally have to re-invent the wheel each
time I try to explain the finer points of AM DX'ing to some short-term,
minimum-wage technician who can't understand why I would want to listen
to anything else besides what comes in on their lines (including massive
interference on Ch. 19, 20, and 21, making those channels unwatchable
during the daytime; I suspect point-to-point transmissions from a water
tower antenna farm six blocks from my house; the cable company says they
can't do anything). Or is it time to dump cable and go to the Dish net?
