KCBQ-1170 in San Diego will be going down forever. Reports are that
the tower site has been sold for development. Plans are for a shopping
mall.
If you're interested in history, this was the original "Q" station.
Programmed by Buzz Bennett, who later progammed other Qstations like
Pitsburgh's 13Q and Miami's WHYI.
This truly will be the "Last Contest."

KXOL in stereo.
KGXL has a real MONSTER het. WOW is it bad. Dunno if'n its from another
station or if KGXL is just hosed but it is a wide kind of thing.

**Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Ragnar - from here in Santa Barbara, on a Superadio III, KGXL is all
alone on the frequency; no het.
What's kind of humorous is that it is stronger than my local (122 watts
nighttime ND about 10 miles away) KZBN-1290 that carries the same
satellite format.
>From the "for whatever it's worth" department, KZBN is owned by comedian
Bob Newhart. The BN stands for Bob Newhart, and its slogan is "Bob AM
1290". It is triplexing (along with KXXT-1340) off of KBKO-1490's tower.

Here is the first reports from the homebrewed one tube unit and it
actually works. I am still tweaking it but it is pretty close to running
speed... This is a day time report. A night time report will follow.
As always, KMIK has images here too. Being that I live 3 miles from
their 50kW antenna doesn't help.
Heard on a homebrewed 1 tube rig using a 1T4, spiderweb coil, MFJ-956
antenna tuner, and scorpions stinger antenna:
550 KGME AZ, Phoenix 1952 7/17 with sportstalk about the British
Open.
620 KTAR AZ, Phoenix 1951 7/17 with Diamondbacks baseball and a
victory over the Texas Rangers in 10 innings.
660 KTNN AZ, Window Rock 0100 7/18 with news of JFK, Jr. missing
plane.
740 KIDR AZ, Phoenix 1951 7/17 announcing R. Unica and R. Unica ads.
770 KKOB NM, Albuquerque 0112 7/18 with a talk show, sounded like Art
Bell.
800 XEROK 0410 7/18 [UTC] Ciudad Juarez, Chih, Mex. Playing Mex.
music.
860 KMVP AZ, Phoenix 1950 7/17 sports talk about tennis.
910 KFYI AZ, Phoenix 1949 7/17and an unusual appearance by Barry
Young on a Saturday program.

baseball.
1010 KXEG AZ, Tolleson 1947 7/17 with religious preacher going at it
to beat the band.
1060 KDUS AZ Guadalupe 1947 7/17 with discussion of the umpires

Program is "Big Band Saturday Night."
1310 KXAM AZ, Mesa 1943 7/17 with a home improvement show.
1360 KFDJ AZ, Sun City 0051 7/18 relaying FMer "Party Radio". ID
"Extreme to the Extreme. 106.3, The Edge."
1430 XEOX Ciudad Obregon, SO, 0412 7/18 [UTC] Mex. playing
contemporary Mexican music.
1480 KPHX AZ, Phoenix 2249 7/17 playing Mex. music. ID "Radio Fiesta".

a movie where he has to moon someone.
1580 KMIK AZ, Tempe 1942 7/17 with Martinelli's ad and R. Disney ad
with "R.Disney, 1580" ID.
This doesn't look like killer DX but it was pretty difficult to pull
these guys out with a simple radio like this one I built. It is about
like a xtal set on steroids.
Heard on a Realistic DX-440, barefoot:
570 KGRT NM, Las Cruces 0812 7/21 with country music and Lojack ad.

I am posting this information here as I have been unable to get an E
Mail to Leonard Hyde. The address <big_1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> does not seem
to work. The E Mail has been returned twice. Hopefully Leonard will see
this.
He was asking about the history ok KHWY / KIOQ (Folsom, CA). I can
give some information on this station from the mid 80s, as I have both
call letters QSL'd.
Per the KHWY (K-Highway) the station signed on January 1985. The
station ran 50 KW day / 1 KW nights. The station s/on with C&W format in
Jan 85. My QSL 7/85 was signed by the whole staff and the letter was
typed by Michael "Music" Frank. Gaye Alan was the station manager. The
address for the station was, 409 Glenn Drive, Folsom CA 95630.
In 1987 they went rock and changed to KIOQ. Same address, QSL letter
signed this time by Gene Lane "KIOQ 1030" and "The Rock" were their IDs.
Shortly after that, the station went dark. A story was going around the
owner got into some trouble. The property was sold. If you want more
information, Gary Jackson in Sacramento knows more I think. Hope that
helps.
