CBL 740 is off the air
After about 57 years on the same frequency and about 75 years from
the same site (if my source is correct) CBL 740 Toronto signed off for
good at 0000 20 June 1999.
In its place here is WMBL Morehead City NC. They are so strong here,
that I wonder if they are not running more than their assigned 14 watts.
***
**Charles Taylor - Charles_Taylor@xxxxxxxxxxxx
WMBL's not running overpower. The seapath is doing that. WMBL here,
some 70 miles away (+ or -) isn't any stronger than I would expect,
being poorer than WFMC-730 Goldsboro.
I've been looking for co-channel WPAQ, Mount Airy, NC (Mount Airy is
the prototype for Mayberry of "Andy of Mayberry"). It's audible NW of
Greenville, but is a mere carrier beat under WMBL, here.
WPAQ presents a lot of live Bluegrass groups.
***
**Bill Harms - wharms@xxxxxxxxx
Perhaps they are using a directional antenna? They were the channel
dominant in Ottawa Canada, per a DXer on #MWDX who was monitoring the
channel last night after CBL's sign off. They were about 95% readable
here. Whatever they are doing they appear to be stronger than the listed
14 watts at night.
***
**Eric Bueneman - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx
KRMG Tulsa and KTRH Houston dominate 740 in CBL's absence. CBL has
become CBLA on 99.1. Not a good trop or E-skip target for me, as local
KFUO-FM is parked on 99.1.

Decisons on 690 & 940 kHz, June 22, 1999
Here is the official CRTC decision on the awarding of 690 kHz. in
Montreal to CKVL- Verdun, currently on 850 kHz.; and 940 kHz. to CIQC-
Montreal, currently on 600 kHz.
It was somewhat of a surprise, particularly to those behind the
application of Radio-Canada, who were hoping to get the 690 frequency
for their new proposed Info Radio service, a French language all news
network.
So sure of this were they, that construction was already underway for
the new studio facilities in the Maison Radio-Canada building in
Montreal!
It is not yet known exactly when the changes to CKVL and CIQC will
take place, and whether or not the company which owns both stations will
acquire the existing transmitting facilities from the CBC, which include
the two antenna towers, and the 2 50kw transmitters, etc.
To review the complete text of the decision, go to the following file
on the CRTC Website:
<http://www.crtc.gc.ca/ENG/BCASTING/DECISION/1999/D99151_0.txt>
It should take some time to get everything in to place, plus the CRTC
is giving both stations a 6-month simulcast period prior to 600 and 850
being shut down.
It will remain to be seen whether or not further applications are
made for the 600 and 850 frequencies.

To those that can, or could hear 530-CKHL, it is still on the air. Or
it was this morning at 9.30 MDT, and is still parallel to 610-CKYL.
Judging by how near to High Level I had to be in order to hear it on the
truck radio, I would guess it's using 250W all day now. The new
CKHL-FM-102.1 is on the air and has it's own programming from 06.00 to
24.00.

1610 (KOE731?) MT, St. Mary's. 6/8 1550 Station not on the air. When
I inquired at the ranger station, they said it had not been
activated for the season yet, and would likely come on the air in
a couple of days. By the way, please delete any listing for a
station on 530 in St. Mary's, as there is no such station.
(TRH-MT4)
1610 KOE732 MT, West Glacier 6/8 1810 Station is active with these
calls (I've seen KOE731 listed for this station). Does not get
out well, maybe about 3 or 4 miles. Completely inaudible at Lake
McDonald lodge about 10 miles away. Note: At one time, the park
planned to add stations at the Elk Winter Range, the Goat Lick
turnout, Logan Pass and the Many Glacier visitor center. I
visited the first two of these locations and they definitely have
no stations; I was fairly near the other two locations and noted
nothing there either. (TRH-MT4)

station here, but nothing noted as we passed through the area.
(TRH-WA2)

National Park, MT on subsequent nights. (TRH-BC3)
1610 KCP208 WA, Leavenworth 5/31 2247 Good for about 20 miles (between
two mountain ranges) with tape loop by woman. "Welcome to the
Wenatchee Ranger District. This is Forest Information Radio
16-10..." . Mentioned roads and camgrounds that were not yet
open for the season. Tape loop included call letter ID.
(TRH-WA2)
1610 TIS WA, Pasco? 6/11 0918 Station rebroadcasting the NOAA weather

Heard on a Sony ICF-42 AM Stereo:
1660 KXOL UT, Brigham City 6/21 0045 "KXOL, Northern Utahs first
ten-thousand watt station". Apparently KXOL must have some FCC
approval that allows them to be 10 kW 24/7 because they are
advertizing always that they are 10kW. They are also for the
first time in my knowledge tonight to be in AM stereo or at least
its the first time it sounded like they could be.

I was on San Cristobal Island in the Galapagos group at the end of
May operating an amateur radio contest. After the contest I spent some
time AM DXing using a Kenwood TS-850 and a 500 foot long Beverage
antenna pointed stateside. Received the following US stations on May 31
from 0400 to 0600 utc:
WOAI 1200, KRLD 1080 and KWKH 1130
These stations were loud and good copy above the static. Of course,
the AM band was "wall to wall" with Spanish language broadcasts.

There are a monster number of two AM stereo sets being sold in the
US. One is sold by Fanfare [www.fanfare.com] and the other is sold by
NRC in its 545.
I have three AM stereo rigs. In Phoenix five AM stereo stations
turned off their exciters leaving the sum total of two. One is religious
the other is SS.
I use a Realistic TM-152 tuner for AM stereo a Infinity car stereo
and two Sony Walkmans.
The two biggies out west, KXOL who never turns down the power, and
KGXL which never turns up the power are both MONO. It's a shame that the
two that play music don't have AM stereo.
