Updates to Robert Foxworth's' report last time...
> Effective at 0001 today, 1380 WRBQ became Disney format on
completion
>of sale to ABC. I am not hearing any call letter IDs, only 1380 Radio
>Disney. I hope I don't have to spend a lot of time listening for a call
>ID.
They are giving ID's now as WWMI.
> After three days of barker tape loop "preparase...la nueva Mega" etc
>plus EE bit advising listeners to find sportstalk on 1010, today
>WZTM-820 is // WBDN-760 so I expect 820 to take over the Mega format of
>"musica mas caliente" etc. I don't know what 760 will do yet.
760 WBDN will remain Spanish, too. 760 and 820 will simulcast the new
96.1 WBDN-FM, until Mega Broadcasting can build additional studios.
Then, there will be separate Spanish programs for their three Tampa
stations.
> 1470 WLVU Dunedin has not been hrd for several weeks, presumed
> SILENT.
This is not entirely accurate. First, the calls are WTBL. Second, the
station is on a reduced schedule, airing some Tampa Bay Lightning games
and other stuff. There is talk Bay News Nine may move to this frequency,
which is currently held by station broker Mark Jorgenson.

More Tampa News
More news from here...since Clear Channel ate Jacor for lunch...keeping
me busy for a couple of days at least...
760 WBDN was // 820 WTZM this morning...now as I write this, WBDN
carrying Devil Rays BB in SS while 820 running La Mega mx
format...this deal getting more rather than less complicated
910 Plant City - discovered by accident (looking for Limbaugh today)
now using calls WSUN and 50's nostalgia MX format, adopted the
persona of the old 620 St Petersburg WSUN who are now WSAA (have
been for a few weeks at least) and who (on 620) relay audio
portion of cable-TV BayNews-9 fulltime.
970 WFLA - put up a 3rd tower, shortened it, put up again, also 2
smaller towers to the S. New higher power imminent if not already
on, haven't hrd any on air promotion except for 1 or 2 gag spots
that poke fun at engineering staff, dancing electrons etc, I
suspect these promos are now history.. Day pattern has nulls to
the W, evident in Oldsmar. Mark Larsen the second air personality
I hrd this morning ranting about the 40-page Clear Channel
employee "manual", says that when they ask him to fill a cup for
random drug screening he is outta there (considering the
false-positive rate, he has a point).
Another thing, when Devil Rays BB was on WFLA during midday, Limbaugh
would be carried on WDAE-1250, this no longer the case, at least today.
I think these two used to be co-owned; no longer.
1380 St Petersburg, new Disney format, now using calls WWMI (Wonderful
World of MIckey is one cloyingly nauseous meaning that pops to
mind) hrd this morning, they seem to cut for local ID about 2
mins before the actual top-of-hour. They promo this format for
"kids of all ages" but I have my doubts anyone over 9 yoa would
be included - maybe no real kids are listening? Why did they
carry an ad for a Steel company on Monday? Kids buying a lot of
sheet and rebar lately?
Also the splash from 1380 has increased tremendously. ABC engineering
talent on loan from God.
Thankfully WSJT 94.1 still Smooth Jazz!!!

It has been officially announced that the shut down of the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporations AM station CBM on 940 kHz. in Montreal will
leave the air this coming Friday evening at Midnight Eastern time; that
is 0400 UTC Saturday.
The station has been simulcasting on 88.5 MHz. since the 1998 January
winter icestorm. It was rumoured to be going off on March 31, 1999, but
obviously that did not happen.
It was announced several times on the air, beginning yesterday, May
10, 1999, on CBM 940 AM / 88.5 FM, that the station is shutting down the
AM outlet "as required by the CRTC (Canadian Radio Television and
Telecommunications Commission)".
The station is giving out the following telephone number
514-597-4466, to call if you are having interference problems, or
difficulty picking up the 88.5 MHz. FM signal. The CBC technical
department has prepared a list of 4 tips to improve reception on FM.
This is given out over the phone, but it is also available on the
station's website. Check: <http://www.radio.cbc.ca>
It is under the Quebec region section on the website.
According to insiders at CBC, they have already been receiving many
complaints from listeners who are having difficulty receiving the FM
signal. Because of the location of the FM antenna on Mount Royal, on the
island of Montreal, there are several areas, even on the island of
Montreal, who are having difficulty picking up a clean signal. Many
areas which received the signal easily on the 940 AM (mediumwave)
frequency, at great distances from Montreal, will no longer have this
luxury with the 88.5 FM signal.
When CBF 690 kiloHertz in Montreal signed off several months ago,
there was a special announcement made just prior to the shutdown,
reflecting on the past of the French AM station. Hopefully a similar
thing will be done with the 940 AM shutdown on Friday evening.
Be sure to tune in early, at least an hour or so before the scheduled
Midnight shutdown in order not to miss anything special which might
occur.
Also, when the 690 signal signed off, a tape loop played for a day or
so, reminding listeners to tune to the FM frequency. This will probably
occur with the 940 shut down as well.
Be listening to a piece of history on Friday evening as another CBC
AM outlet leaves the band.

Special broadcast on 675 kHz from Norway
Yesterday May 11th a new AM-transmitter started operating from the
tiny island of Rvst in northern Norway. This transmitter replace the
old unit at Bodv. Frequency and power remains the same; 675 kHz 10 kW.
This new transmitter is capable of operating DRM digital AM as soon
as a system is approved, and capable of running up to 20 kW if needed.
The location is also very good with plenty of seawater on all sides.
Rvst is one of the outer most islands in the Lofoten chain of
islands.
A special bilingual broadcast was scheduled to mark this event, but
due to some delay in providing equipment for the programmefeed from the
mainland, the transmitter is currently only capable of providing off air
relay of NRK P1 off VHF FM. The equipment is expected to arrive on the
island next week, so the special broadcast has been rescheduled to:
Friday 21st of May between 2000 and 2400 UTC on 675 kHz.
I know it's a bit late in the spring to expect some transatlantic
signals, but hey: Give it a try anyway! The tests shows an improvement
in signal compared to the old 675 Bodv signal!
A special QSL will be available for the May 21st transmission.

CBM, 940 kHz, in Montreal is running frequent break-ins over local
programming this morning announcing that they will be leaving the AM
band as of midnight tonight.
Too bad they couldn't have done it in Nov or Dec last year!
>From N. New England this is a great DX frequency for Mexico and South
America. Getting rid of this strong local signal will be a blessing.
Anybody know if and when another Canadian will occupy this clear
channel?

On April 30, I downloaded the FCC's .gz compressed files, which my
system is set up to process (as opposed to .ZIP files). I didn't realize
they were current only to April 26 until after I processed and uploaded
the last batch of WHAMLOGs on May 1. That means the last group of files
didn't contain changes which took place between April 26 and April 30.
There were a significant number of changes during that period -- 5K and
4K for AM and FM, respectively.
As well, there was a minor format change in a few of the FCC's FM
database records. This caused my processing software to introduce errors
into the FM files.
WHAMLOGs were corrected at 1400 UTC May 5. If you downloaded before
then, please download again, and please accept my apologies.
