abt 50 days. Letter included : a 2 page letter anda visitcard from

I've received your letter of 02/01/99 and thanks for your information.
Our station has received similar letters from different parts of Europe
and America.  The station you heard on 13/1/99 and 31/1/99 in the
frequency of 5500Khz at 17:30 ¯ 1800:40hrs. and 16:05-16:29UTC is truly
ours. Our radio is not a newly installed radio station. It has been
broadcasting ever since 1986 from the  bushes of Tigray we used to call
the liberated area during the past armed struggle period we waged
against the pro-Soviet fashist regime. The people of Tigray lead by the
Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) fought for 17 years against
Soviet intervention and fashist Military junta of the Derg. We have paid
a lot of sacrifices. Since that times the radio has been the Voice of
the People of Tigray. It was installed with the help of Tigrayans living
inside and outside Tigray as immigrants in different parts of the world.
The radio was a symbol of unity of our people, through which our people
speak about their horrible times under the late feudal system of Emperor
HaileSellasie and under the fashist Derg Regime. It was a radio, through
which our people used to know the sources of their atrocities, the
solution to their problems. It was a radio, which helped our people to
organize themselves around the Democratic principles of TPLF. Our Radio
the Voice of the Revolution of Tigray was the first Tigrigna language
Voice that truly informed, educated and entertained the Tigray people.
It developed credibility in the people and was considered as a voice
that directs the daily life of the people. In 1991 the war ended. The
Soviet backed Derg regime was toppled down. Our organization TPLF with
its sister member organizations of Ethiopian Peoples  Revolutionary
Democratic Front EPRDF came to power through a democratic election. A
new era has began in Ethiopia. Democratic institutions are structured
and functioning. Basic human and political rights including freedom of
belief are respected. Peace is consolidated. The whole Ethiopian Peoples
are now progressing towards development. Economic conditions are
improving. Our country has started developing at a rate of more than 7%
annually. We are having excellent international relations. Foreign
investors are coming. Annual inflation has fallen to 1% etc. And our
radio is now working for the consolidation of the already gained peace
and democracy, for the enhancement of Socio-economic development by
giving relevant information and education to our people. The Voice of
the Revolution of Tigray is broadcasted, using 10kw short-wave (AM)
transmitter from the capital city of Tigray (one of the autonomous
regional states of Ethiopia), Mekelle for 50 hrs. Weekly, on 5500 short
waye. Its present air time programs are as  follows: Monday to Friday
Morning 0400 - 0500 (UTC) Midday 0930 - 1030 (UTC) Evening 1500 - 1900
(UTC) Saturday 8c Sunday Morning 0400 - 0900 (UTC) Afternoon1100 - 1630
(UTC) These airtime programs can be expanded for the future. The radio's
area of coverage with excellent reception are Ethiopia, Eritrea, and
other Horn of African countries and The Middle East. The language is
Tigrigna. We wish you one-day come to Ethiopia and see Tigray. Tigray
has many tourist attractions. Ancient obelisks and Rock-hewn churches,
different cultural expressions, social activities, attractive
landscapes. Ethiopia as a whole is well known for its different wild
life and landscape. The Mountain Nyala and the Red Fox, the wild
animals, are found only in Ethiopia. Many tourists are now coming to

PERU- 3235 Radio Luz Y Sonido. QSL Card and personal letter to Pedro
Martinez Tineo, Director-E. 4 months and nice postcards. (Rodriguez,

PERU- 5906.8 Radio Panorama.Last Saturday I was happy to receive a
letter signed by Segundo Ayala Brione, owner of Radio Panorama, in which
he confirms my  reception report from past January. In his letter, he
says that he and his brother Miguel have set up La Voz de los Andes,
1400,  mediumwave, and Radio Panorama, 5900. They belong to an
evangelical church and that´s the reason why they broadcast their Global
2000 morning program which, apart from prayers, consists of religious
music. The mw outlet carries commercials and so it is the economical
backbone of the sw operation which does not carry any commercials.
Schedule, somewhat irregular, is 1000-1200, 2300-0200. As for Recopampa,
he tells me that it is a "centro-poblado" belonging to the jurisdiction
of  Sorochuco, having approx. 700 inhabitants. Its full name is San Juan
de Recopampa. One may write them via La Voz de los Andes, which is
located on the Plaza de Armas or Sorochuco, or directly to Radio
Panorama, Centro-poblado Recopampa, Distrito de Sorochuco, Provincia de
Celendín, Departamento de Cajamarca, Región Autónoma del Marañón,
 noted the name of Region, maybe ex-Region Nor oriental del Maranon)
Peru. There is also a phone number, which can be used, + 51 (44) 820
321, although this number is to a public phone booth. Thanks to Henrik

ALBANIA- R. Tirana English to NAm confirmed on 6115 and better 7160 UT
Sun March 28 for the 0145-0200 and 0230-0300  broadcasts. Main topic,
not surprisingly, was Kosova (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL
BROADCASTING / GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-15, March 29 )

ANTARCTICA- LRA36 picked a below-average day propagationally for its
special to the USA, Sat March 27 on 15476; already on with tone at 2311
tune-in, poor and fluttery; 2332 ID, still with tone which I now suppose
is het from 15475 Russian(?). LRA36 best on USB; 2334 English anmt; 2335
giving E-mail address, woman in Spanish, man in English; 2336 IDs in
Spanish and English, 2337 music and talk, 2348 vocal music, etc., etc.
Copy was rather difficult due to poor signal and fading; was much better
when last heard in this time period UT March 19. Taped the rest of it,
and rechecked at 0101 when reception was slightly better, saying
good-night in English, with  15476, address, music to 0104* after brief
open carrier. BTW, this is as good a time as any to speak up on behalf
of our Canadian  neighbours, who must be too polite to make a fuss about
it, but this is only one of a number of recent instances where overseas
broadcasters say they are broadcasting to the "USA", ignoring Canada, in
not using the politically correct term "North America" instead -- or do
they really not care to be heard in Canada?? (Glenn Hauser, OK, REVIEW

ANTARCTICA- LRA36, 15475.8, on late UT Fri March 19: it didn't last
long. No ID but I'm sure it was them, probably a technician making some
adjustments. Very good signal here, S7-8. The sequence was: 0001 UT, I
tuned in; open carrier, interrupted once. At 0011, started playing SP/EG
rock music. Signal off the air at 0026. Oh well, as I said, keep a watch
on the frequency (John Cobb, GA) Tnx to John's tip, I heard the tail end
of this too at 0025-0026* Would have been quite listenable (Glenn

ANTARCTICA- Carrier detectable on 15476 around 2000 Sat March 20,
presumably LRA36 which might have been readable except for the unabated
supersplatter from VOA-Delano carrying V. of Greece. This 75-degree beam
right across the US amounts to a domestic SW broadcast. Or is it
intended for "Bermuda and Cape Verde Islands", the only land further

AUSTRALIA-  Nigel Holmes explained some of RA's major frequency changes
for A-99 effective March 28: SEAs/WEu 0900-1400 21820 is new, following
the test on another 21 MHz frequency a few weeks ago. But is QRP to 70
kW, due to continuing problems at Shepparton, for an indefinite period;
not expected to make much difference at a loss of less than 2 dB
CPac/NAm 1100-1400 9580 starts 2 hours later than before, but should
still be good in Nam PNG/SWPac 0800-1200 13605 is resumed; 1200-1700
11650; 2100-0800 on 17580 ex-17715 due to QRM Japan/PNG Grandstand,
weekends 0200-0800 on 21725 ex-15240, and does indeed include AFL from
ABC See <http://www.abc.net.au/ra> for new frequency and program

AUSTRALIA- DST ends here conveniently on March 28, when a number of
program changes take place. Grandstand, live, as usual moves a UT hour
later early Sat and Sun. Weekend programs are moved around so they will
be more similar to weekdays, such as in local mornings: 1800 Sun-Thu
Pacific Beat; Fri Pacific Focus, Sat Pacific Review. The Week will be
dropped, so its presenter can do Pacific Beat instead. Last edition of
At Your Request, which has gotten almost no musical requests from South
and Southeast Asia since Darwin closed in 1997, is this Tuesday at 0610,
0940, 2240, Wed 0630. See website for compelte new schedule soon. From

BELGIUM - [non]. RVI's new 0400 to WNAm on Bonaire 15565 is too high, so
far, with fluttery, not solid signal from first date, UT Sun March 28 --
and in see-saw of whether this is the "first" or "last" broadcast of the
day we found it is indeed the first as this carried Sunday programming
starting with Radio World, which later included Kulpsville interview
with Larry Nebron; this was repeated Sun at 2230 on same when reception
is superb; and indeed the UT Mon 0400 had something else, with the same

CANADA- RCI's printed program guide for A-99 has just arrived. Among the
significant changes other than the usual 1-hour-earlier shifts: The
0200-0200 UT Sunday on 9535, 9755, 11715, 13670, 15305 will contain
after the CBC News [if any], from 10 April: N.S. Kitchen Party; and from
29 May: Vinyl Cafe. The now daily 0500-0530 on 5995, 9755, 11930 to
WNAm, et al to elsewhere will be First Edition M-F; Earthwatch on Sat;

COLOMBIA- As to the Colombian clandestine, as far as I can tell, their
name is still Voz de la Resistencia, i.e. without a "La" and  without
"del Bloque Oriental" as Jorge GarcIa will have it. The commander
mentioned as "Guildardo" is actually "Gildardo" and the three Americans
have not been mentioned as "missionaries" - at least not in the
religious sense of the word - but rather as friends of the uwa Indians.
Most of the inter-guerilla communications are on USB in the 6 and 7 MHz
bands, so "7735 VHF" could also be interpreted as "7735 USB", who knows.
But there are still three American missionaries somewhere out in the
jungle, missing since 1993. The US gov't believes FARC to be the
kidnappers, but nothing has been heard about their fate for quite some
time. I wrote about them in the MT a couple of years ago. When in
Colombia, I often checked 6694U, which is one used by the CICR on a
nationwide basis, Bogota and a network of half a dozen fixed stations in
other areas and also mobile transmitters mounted in 4WD's which move
around in areas of turmoil (Henrik Klemetz, Sweden, via Hauser / GH

COSTA RICA-  RFPI's new Nigerian program heard Fri March 26 1231-1328 on
21460-USB (having missed the presumed original airing Thu at 2030 and
first repeat Fri 0430). As I suspected, it was not in Swahili, but
mostly in Yoruba, as announced in brief English portions, tho at the
outset I believe it was said to be in "three languages" including
Swahili -- maybe other weeks. Yoruba is a tonal  language with little if
any Arabic influence, nothing like Swahili which is not native to
Nigeria. Possibly a few words of Swahili were thrown in somewhere, but I
never caught them. Hour was mostly high-life music, with some talks in
Yoruba; only frequency mentioned at one point was 15050. 1243 talk
segment in Yoruba mentioned "Revolutionary United Front" at 1246 -- so
is there a clandestine  element to this show? English IDs were "ABS
Radio International" sometimes adding, as at 1248 "...the Voice of
Democracy". At 1259 gave P- and E-mail addresses during Yoruba, one
ending in .net, but I missed them. Wrapup in English at 1325 mentioned
"Fleet  Commander", perhaps the title of the speaker or the sponsor of
the program (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL  BROADCASTING) ---
RFPI is considering running 15049 later into the night with spring /
summer conditions; still on, loud and clear around 0600 March 26, but
gone at 0630 recheck. I think they could safely run it all the way until
0800 or even all night, every night (Hauser, R.I.B. / GH SHORTWAVE/DX

COSTA RICA. Re: the new CR s/w station for which James Latham has been
asked to serve as consultant, we have a preliminary meeting with them
this week at RFPI and a field test to determine feasibility of the
project next week. The group, the Cultural Committee of the Municipality
of Jaco' (a Pacific coast beach community) want to set up the station to
broadcast cultural programming to the local community. They plan to
operate in the 3 MHz area at 250 - 500 watts using a vertical antenna.
Estimated time of project completion is 1 year (most of that is time
taken for license application). Shortwave was chosen because, as you may
know, FM licenses are nearly impossible to come by in this country
without waiting a lifetime (Joe Bernard, RFPI, March 24, REVIEW OF

CZECH REPUBLIC- Czeching R. Prague, English at 0300 March 28 on 7345,
found clash with Vatican; not audible on 11615. Toward the end of the
2230 English, around 2255, found 11600 with a het on the high side until
2257* The other carrier proved to be R. Bulgaria, opening in Spanish at
2300. Prague's 15545 was also audible but weaker (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW

GERMANY- [non]. DW's 11810 frequency at 0100 March 29 was running
interval signal continuously at 0107-0111 check and probably the entire
half sesquihour, now listed via Sackville, as in RIBOLD 254. Tho this
was 24 hours after the European timeswitch, somebody evidently fouled up

HUNGARY- R. Budapest confirmed on new 9560 for the 0100 English to Nam
March 29; clear; seems a good choice (Glenn Hauser, R.I.B. / GH

IRAN- Scanning thru RHC frequencies at 0134 March 28, came upon 13605
with VIRI giving Spanish schedule; for the 0130 hour, caught only 9650
and some 6 MHz frequencies, not 13605; also said at 0230 on 6050; 0530
to Europe on 15260, 11700. Anyhow, keep new 13605 in mind in case some
of the English broadcasts are also on it (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF

ITALY- Unlike Spain, if you have more than one frequency from SEu, it's
a good idea to use 19m to NAm, as RAI is now doing for 0050-0110 English
on 15240; barely audible, however, March 29, whilst 11800 was quite good

KOREA,  SOUTH-  RKI A-99 changes concerning relay sites: Skelton
UKOGBANI MerLEEN, on 3970 ex-3980 [good news for NEXUS-IBA], but time
stays 2200-2230 UT. Has 3 sesquihours per day of Merlin relays, also in
French, German, Russian, Korean. From March 28. (GH SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
99-14, March 25)

KOREA,  SOUTH- RCI relay, since April 90 when contracted for 2 hpd
exchange relays; Spanish is being expanded to 1 full hour in the morning
at 1000-1100 on 11715, pushing English half an hour later to 1100-1130,
but this will stay on what had been the winter  frequency, 9650. Date
not specified for this change, so we wonder if April 4 or March 28 (RKI
Multiwave Feedback March 21 via WORLD OF RADIO 982 / GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-14, March 25)

KOREA, SOUTH- [non]. Contrary to info from last week's RKI Multiwave
Feedback, Sun March 28 at 1107 check on 9650, no English, but Korean;
nor on 11715; nor at 1130. Possibly English is airing this week only at

NETHERLANDS- RN's English to Africa at 1830 and 1930 now confirmed on
Bonaire 21590 ex-Dutch (and still in Dutch before  1830), huge signal
one could easily believe is headed for us, and which a few months back
we also caught with spurs (gh, March 28-29, OK, R.I.B. / GH SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 99-15, March 29)

NEW ZEALAND- From RNZI's brand-new program schedule, just posted on
their website, note that the new time for Mailbox per this is really UT
Thu 0305 on 17675, as would be expected from previous 0205, not 0330 as
Adrian Sainsbury told Mickey Delmage in item recently quoted here!

NEW ZEALAND- RNZI has been staying on an hour later than scheduled,
heard until 1109* March 22, 23, 24 on 9700, regular programming, not

ROMANIA- We've yet to see RRI's A-99 schedule, but March 29 checking
Brazil on 15445, we heard them stopping around 1255 though a carrier
stayed on, and at 1300, RRI was here opening English. We figured, at
last--two minor broadcasters have coordinated to avoid clashing, with
Brazil stopping its English half an hour earlier--but at 1342 recheck
15445 had Brazil in Spanish clashing with RRI; RRI  was also on // 15390
and heard them announce 9690 as well, but not the 17 MHz frequencies, if
any, which were not propagating this  day, anyway. Nothing on former

SERBIA- Belatedly listened to tape of the UT Wed March 25 R. Yugoslavia
0100 on 7115, 0200 on 7130 English transmissions. At  about 0125 gave
new English schedule effective Sunday March 28, daily u.o.s.:  Au
1900-1930 7230 --- Af 1830-1900 9720 --- Eu 1830-1900 6100 2100-2130
6100, 6185 --- ENAm 0100-0130 9580 exc Sun ("Eastern North America and
the Midwest") WNAm 0530-0600 9580.  Both the 41mb transmissions were
well heard, but the 0200 on 7130 had some DW in German in the
background, uncovered by 0230. A sample of the rhetoric: "...neo-Nazi
policy of the United States and its satellites". Went on to criticize
CNN's Christiane  Amanpour as not really knowing what was happening, and
CNN's objective to televize bombings a la Baghdad. (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW
