No sign of KTSA test here in null of KARI; the channel is pretty full
here anyway.

Morse code coming in fairly well o/KBGG-Des Moines and Miami at 7:30 PM
(CST) 2030 EST 3/27. I am location on the Northern Oregon coast and use
a Drake R8 and 1500' Eastern Beverage. A taped reception report will be
sent.
The KTBK 1700 was pretty good here. In playing back the tape, I even got
several voice IDs, mentioning that KTBK will be on this coming Wednesday
and he Sports format on 1310 is moving to 1700. Presume I heard both
powers as some of the code sets were much weaker u/KBGG.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Craig - Denver CO - DXer@xxxxxxx
All I heard was a very short piece of code at 2054 EST under KBGG.
If I had sneezed I would have missed the code. I listened from about
2030 to 2100 ET.
I thought it would have been a little stronger here, some splatter
and audio from R. Disney on 1690.
2010 & KIWA loop
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Nigel Pimblett - Medicine Hat, Alberta - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
KTBK heard here with code IDs, and bits of audio through a strong KBGG.
First heard at 7:05 CST, but much stronger later on. Like Patrick, I
noted some of the code IDs were much stronger than other, so perhaps
switching between powers.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Patrick M. Griffith (Pat) - Federal Heights, CO - AM-DXer@xxxxxxxxx
I was at work and only had access to a car radio. Nothing heard from the
test w/KBGG present under splatter from the local 1690 Disney station in
my back yard (well almost).
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
KTSA test. Again, another no-show as the San Antonio area had a
lightening storm that knocked theirFM off, per call to the CE at KTSA.
This will be resked at a later date, maybe after the NAB convention or
maybe next Fall.

Local WNCT-1070 appears to be making a go with its majority Mexican
format. Quite a few advertisements, indicating that now they're selling
their time successfully.
Acc. to announcements, is XE 1500-2400 EST Mo-Fri, and Sat. after NASCAR
races (about 1700)-2400. Don't know about Sundays.
Today, at 1901, top-of-hour ID was all SS: "Esta es W N C T [Doble U,
Ene Ce Te], Greenville, Mil Setenta [1070], diez mil Watts(10,000 Watts)
de potencia".

*Eric Bueneman - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx
KXEN-1010 is doing the same thing after 5:00 p.m. local (6:00 p.m. ELT),
seven days a week. They seem to be selling more ads after 5:00 p.m., and
also running quite a few PSAs, too. They do their legal IDs at the top
of the hour (such as "Ka-equis-e-ene Festus/San Luis" [Spanish for St.
Louis]) at the top of the hour. A lot of Spanish-speaking folks have
moved to the South and Midwest in recent years, justifying the need for
a Spanish format in areas such as Greenville. In fact, Atlanta has THREE
Spanish-speakers (simulcasters WXEM-1460/WAOS-1600 and WAZX-1550, which
is simulcast on 101.9 in Cleveland, GA). What hath Pancho Villa wrought?

KGIL/KGXL is announcing a format change on Monday to a Westwood One
format that was on KLAC from 1994 to 1998 [?]
***
*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
It's called "AM Only" (adult standards). KLAC dropped it near the end of
last year. My local KZBN (owned by comedian Bob Newhart) carries it.
After having had a chance to play with your TRF (the right one), what do
you think of it? How does it compare to your other radios? What does it
do better and what does it do worse?
***
*Eric Bueneman - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx
Westwood One's Adult Standards ("AM Only") format is pretty common in
the Midwest, too...aired locally on WRTH-1430. I can also hear the
format on WMIX-940 Mount Vernon, IL; KRHW-1520 Sikeston, MO; KSFT-1550
St. Joseph, MO among others. WSAI-1530 Cincinnati, OH uses this as
filler material. Some FM stations also carry "AM Only". Westwood One is
partly owned by CBS/Infinity Broadcasting, so you might hear CBS
personnel on WW1's two networks, Mutual and NBC Radio. Their primary
competition is ABC's "Unforgettable" format, which airs on WHLY-1620
South Bend, IN. Both formats mix in older popular standards (such as Big
Band music and softer, non-rock hits) with soft Adult Contemporary
music. ABC's format tends to play more up-beat tunes, such selected
Motown oldies and later instrumentals (such as Herb Alpert's 1979 smash
hit "Rise"). Jones Radio Network is the syndicator for "Music Of Your
Life", the format that was created by Al Ham, and debuted on WMAS-1450
Springfield, MA in 1979. Very little, if any, AC tunes are played in
this format. The primary focus of Music of Your Life is the Big Band
tunes, very popular in the 1940s and early 1950s. Some stations even do
it live and local...WSAI-1530 does it live and local most of the time.
Two of the top five markets are without such a format on a listenable,
full-time frequency...New York and Chicago (WQEW's format displaced by
Radio Disney, WJJD displaced by all-sports WSCR, "The Score"). The
closest such station to New York is on FM (WRTN-93.5), and the closest
such stations to Chicago are a daytimer (WAIT-850) and one who runs very
low power at night (WCGO-1600). Dallas/Fort Worth and Atlanta also do
not have an Adult Standards station (KAAM being driven of 1310 by
all-sports KTCK, and off 620 by Radio Disney, Atlanta's last Adult
Standards station was WQXI-790, now an all-sports station as "The
Zone"). The closest Adult Standards stations to these markets are much
further away...the closest one to Dallas/Fort Worth, to the best of my
knowledge, is KBME-790 Houston, TX, while the closest one to Atlanta is
WDOD-1310 Chattanooga, TN. But, there is good news for Atlanta
listeners...the format is available at night on WSAI-1530 Cincinnati,
OH.

920 KGHO WA, OLYMPIA is now Sat. C&W //99.3 (Aberdeen, WA), who has
an agreement with them (KBKW AM & FM) to do some selling for
them. In return Spencer BCing who owns KGHO/KJTT will run the
99.3 Sat C&W format on 920. Call letters will be changing soon
(with in a week or so ) to KAYO. The current ID seems to be
"KGHO, Olympia-Tumwater-Aberdeen-Hoquiam" noted at 1600 EST 3/26.
Info rec. via phone call to KGHO. (PM-OR)
1490 KJTT WA, HOQUIAM is now running oldies, rnning promos for "KGHO",
soon to be back with those call letters wihin a week or so.

HELP WITH
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
*Eric Bueneman - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx
There is an application for 830 not far from Norcross, GA, as far as I
know. The one I know about is in Palmetto, GA (southwest of Atlanta), 50
kW day and 270 watts at night. The frequency was originally applied for
(and granted a construction permit) at Lithia Springs, GA back in 1983,
originally 50 kW day and 500 watts at night, and assigned the calls
WGBV. The CP's owner later amended it to specify Smyrna as the city of
license, with an increase in night power to 5 kW. The CP was cancelled
in 1991. With the high number of AM signals permeating Atlanta (which
has the worst ground conductivity of any of the Top 20 markets), this
may go by the wayside, too (unless it's bought out by a big
conglomerate).
I've heard WFNO in the past at night...the station is supposed to
protect WBAP-820 Fort Worth, TX, in addition to WCCO-830 Minneapolis, MN
and WHAS-840 Louisville, KY.

My guess is KZSJ San Martin, California. I believe they are Asian.
There's not much on 1120 at night; most are daytimers. That seriously
cuts down the possibilities.
***
*Richard Toebe - richtoebe@xxxxxxx
It is KZSJ. They went to Asian a few weeks ago. They don't always ID
on or near the hour, and when they do it's really quick. They're not
always good about powering down at night either. I'm sure KPNW is
really happy about them being on.

I picked up a Realistic 12-655 radio for $4. It is in mint condition. It
is tan with a black plastic grille and says "Long Range TRF Circuit"on
the front.
Is this the rig all you old timers were talking about being the best DX
rig they ever used or is it something else?
***
*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Sounds like you got the right one. I bought a model number 12-656A TRF
on e-bay; at the time I wasn't aware there were three Realistic TRF
models (the 12-655, 12-656, and 12-656A). Some knowledgeable folks on
here told me mine is the worst of the three. My Superadios II and III
are better overall, but it has surprisingly good sound for a small radio
and it's quite sensitive. Selectivity is where mine falls down. Where
did you find yours? Sounds like somebody didn't know what they had was
anything special.
***
*Paul Swearingen - PlsBCBDXER@xxxxxxx
You go, Ragnar! This is the one, although all the 12-655's I have ever
seen were grey, not tan. If it works, you got a bargain (again).
***
*ragnar danneskjold - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx
Works on batteries and AC. Can't tell yet but it seems to be just a hair
less than a GE SRII. I'll have to play with it for a few nights before I
make up my mind. It's a pretty good deal for a like new rig for $4.
It is NOT as good as a GE SRIII or that Panasonic RF 1200 I picked up
but it is a pretty decent rig. I am anxious to run it tonight.
There are always a lot of radios at the thrift stores around town and
every now and then one really catches my eye. This one looked perfect so
I picked it up and looked at the back. For some reason 12-655 stuck in
my mind. I picked it up since it was cheap and I thought it was the one
everyone was talking about.
I can't really tell how good it is yet because I will reserve judgement
until I can try it a couple of nights to compare. I am pretty spoiled by
having a Kenwood R-1000 that works well. It reminds me of how the
Optimus 12-604A compares to the GE SRIII. The Optimus is a good set but
not as good as the SRIII. I would guess that this rig is good but not as
good as the SRII.
***
*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
There's something I forgot to mention. Try your TRF up in the expanded
band; I was pleasantly surprised to find that mine goes up to 1650.
***
*Ralph Sanserino - sanser@xxxxxxx
Lets say it was the best $30 portable for its time. Portable users may
say its the best rig they ever used. Do not sell your R-1000. I have
the service manual for the 12-655 if you would like a copy let me know.
