IDs into their legal ID at the top of each hour. (IRCA)
Email: wqsnam@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Saturday, March 27, 1999 - KTBK-1700, Sherman, TX will be testing from
4:00-8:00 pm CT(5:00-9:00pm ET)with code IDs. Powers used will be 10000
watts and 700 watts omni-directional from their just-completed 320'
tower (5/8 wave). The tower is 5/8 wavelength, which partially explains
the strange night power (RMS restriction of field strength) and also
impacts the characteristics of the skywave radiation. Transmitter is a
Harris 10 kW DX-10 solid state, AM stereo. Reception reports may be sent
to:

According to a Denver newspaper article today 1280 KRRF Denver, known
as 1280 Ralph is changing formats at midnight Sunday. They are dropping
the talk format and will be simulcasting the FM side. So if I remember
correctly the FM side is KXKL and called "Cool 105" with Oldies.
They were losing too much money with talk format is the reason for
this the article said. Be nice if they decided to just go quiet for
awhile on the AM side.

Here is a message forwarded to me by Neal Ford, the Montreal
correspondent for RadioDigest.com. It is regarding the new, proposed AM
station, CJMS, a French language country music station licensed for St.
Constant, Quebec. They are hoping to make it on the air before the
summer of 1999.
"I just got this from the CRTC website: "Decision CRTC 99-69Ottawa, 22
March 1999 Michel Mathieu, on behalf of a company to be incorporated
Saint-Constant, Quebec - 199808268 Application processed by Public
Notice CRTC 1999-21dated 5 February 1999 Change of frequency and
decrease in night-time power for CJMS
1. The Commission authorizes Michel Mathieu, on behalf of a company to
be incorporated, to amend the technical parameters for CJMS
Saint-Constant by changing the frequency from 1320 kHz to 1040 kHz and
decreasing the night-time transmitter power from 3,000 watts to 1,100
watts.
2. The Commission notes that these changes reflect the as-built
technical facilities of the undertaking, which is not yet in operation.
It further notes that the authorized day-time transmitter power will
remain unchanged at 5,000 watts.
3. The Commission authorizes the licensee to operate the undertaking
on the basis of the contours and particulars resulting from the
above-mentioned changes.
4. The Commission reminds the licensee that the technical parameters
approved in this decision must be implemented within the period for
construction and implementation of the undertaking approved in Decision
CRTC 98-456 dated 28 September 1998.Secretary General This decision is
to be appended to the licence. It is available in alternative format
upon request, and may also be viewed at the following Internet site:

sports talk.
There is an 850 from Birmingham with R. Disney, WSCR from Chicago in
1160, WMAQ on 670 from Chicago, no Californians, and about the furthest
west I can hear probably would be Ft, Worth WBAP 820 and Kansas City on
610. That's about it. The FCC has so many stations I can't hear the west
coast. I can hear NYC and Boston with no problems.
Crump should be a MWDX heaven since there is ONE AM station on the dial
24h within about 100 miles. It isn't really because of the way the FCC
spaced the stations.
The thing that I have found is that east coast DX is exactly as the guys
have written in books and the other AMDX club. Western DX is VERY
different than what has been written. Eastern radio dials are MUCH more
crowded and takes much more strategy. The coasts are different than here
in Tennessee or Arizona and DXing in the Tennessee Mountains takes
different strategies than DXing in the Rockies.
Being in the Rockies we get some of the effects that others get, but we
are more forced into a catch as catch can situation. We get what we get
and thats all there is to it. The easterners and people on the Pac coast
get a lot of stuff we can't even dream about. Actually I like DXing from
Arizona because I find it chaotic and unpredictable. Much more so than
DXing from Rhode Island. The good thing about there is you get lots of
Europeans. The good thing about the Rockies area where we live is that
you can get South Americans and that is cool if you "habla Espanol"
crappy if you don't.

active whip, to DXP-1 phasing unit
*** COMMENTS ***
"DX is back !" Now that the snow and bitter cold of the last few weeks
has relented a bit, it's once again possible to do some real DXing from
sites that "deliver the goods". Certainly the South Orleans, MA town
landing location qualifies. Big gun stations like Morocco-1044,
Libya-1251, France-1467, and Saudi Arabia-1521 start booming in more
than an hour before sunset. The more interesting DX quickly follows.
By two hours after sunset, domestic QRM gets worse and the foreign DX
becomes less exciting.
The secret is to work that magic sunset-1 hour to sunset+2 hours window.
Use a cardioid or end-fire directional antenna. And, above all, DX from
a coastal site whenever possible.

Last night between 0100 and 0210 EST there was a very strong Spanish
station on 830. I never heard any calls and my Spanish is pretty poor.
But after about every song I heard the slogan "R. Uno en Cadena
National".
Anyone know what this ?

Craig, It may have been 830 Norcross, LA Latest calls I have is
WFNO..... I have logged them many times here in FL.. They really get
out. Format is Spanish Hits. Perhaps Lynn has better info ??
***
**Lynn Hollerman - gmhollerman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I heard my name mentioned...I get that station here in the daytime, tho
I have it as being in Norco - I have no idea where Norcross is, but I
know Norco is near New Orleans(southeast of me) - I get them weakly. I
used to get them a lot in AL - their pattern must take their signal to
the east of them. This morning, tho, I have 2 SS stations on 830 duking
it out, with no recognizable ID, but evidently one of them uses Abba's
"Dancing Queen" as part of their theme...
One follow-up to this...I've heard them some more this morning, and now
the station that's dominant is WFNO, in SS with NO traffic reports and
other assorted morning-show stuff, as well as EE/SS ads and
announcements and a couple mentions of Norco, and they appear to call
themselves "La Fabuloso", as in "Esta es La Fabuloso..." - my SS is
rather poor, but I *think* that's what they're saying. I usually hear
them in EE, tho...

What you have is Radio Reloj (Clock) from Cuba. They broadcast SS News
and on the minute the broadcast the letter R in Morse. They can be
heard on numerous frequencies.
***
**Charles Taylor - Charles_Taylor@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Yeah, Radio Reloj is a possibility. They send "R R" every minute after
the time announcement. They don't send tone, though; and all their
programming content is news (in SS, of course).
The Radio Reloj network sends "R R" (two Rs, not one). It stands for
Radio Reloj, naturally.
RR has been running continuously since the 50s, I believe. It paused not
a beat during the Cuban Revolution, when Castro came to power.
A propos of nothing at all, the word Reloj is an example of an irregular
spelling in Spanish. Reloj is pronounced as though spelled Relo, in
Spanish, with the accent on the "o". That's about the only irregular
spelling that I know of in Spanish; they are very, VERY, few.

The latest IRCA Technical Guide (what, you don't have your copy?) has
the following:
The Yaesu FRG-7700 by Don Moman
Features....... coverage is in 30 bands of 1 MHz. Receives AM,
USB, LSB, CW and FM. AM selectivity widths of 12, 6 and 2.7 kHz.
Fast/slow AGC. Effective noise blanker. FM squelch control.
Continuously variable RF attenuator on front panel plus a fixed 20 dB
attenuator on the back panel. 12 memory select, enter, recall and fine
tuning if memory option installed. Full featured clock/timer/frequency
display with timer outputs via RCA phono plugs on rear. Accessory
connector on rear allows access to AGC, mute and 11 volt supply mainly
for use with Yaesu accessories. Wire and coax antenna inputs, separate
MW/SW inputs. Power: 110/220 VAC or 12 vdc if DC kit installed.
Performance...... Similar to the Kenwood R-1000. On SW the
sensitivity was excellent. The quiet front end provided little
background hiss. No spurious SW signals (caused by other SW signals)
were noted, but a strong MW signal could upset the entire SW spectrum. I
used a 3 MHz high-pass filter which eliminated most of that problem.
Preselection was necessary for reasonable MW performance in an urban
area, as overload occurred rather easily on that band.
The wide and medium filters are broad and were of use only for
listening to very strong signals. I used the narrow filter for all my
listening, but the filter skirts are neither as sharp nor as deep as the
R-1000's narrow filter. Various companies provided filter upgrades, but
it's likely a do-it-yourself job now.
The dial system was very smooth and rapid. Drift was never
noticed, and the set performed fine in -10 C weather on a DX'pedition.
The S-meter appeared to be quite accurate, at least up to 40 over S9.
The display caused some interference to nearby MW loops but it wasn't
very strong. The metal case provided a high degree of shielding; only a
few local MW stations were heard with the antenna disconnected.
Overall, I found the FRG-7700 a good SW performer which is
convenient to use.
(A tuned loop antenna or a tuned preselector with a random wire antenna
was necessary to avoid overload on the MW band. Without going through
my old paper files, I'm not sure whether this set had automatic
attenuation on the MW band, and if so, if it could be easily bypassed.
Good luck with this...NHP)

Does anyone out there in the dark recesses of Cyber Space have or know
of the email address (if they have one) of KXOL?????
BTW they have an exceptionally strong signal here on the West Coast.
Even now I can hear them (not strong) at 0745 PST. Long after sunrise.
#2 BTW Because this involves Secret Mountain Laboratory "Secrets" I
will not go into HOW. But I have acquired a CCRADIO and I also own a
good GE Super Radio II. Preliminary testing says that there is no
startling difference in the ability to hear a weak distant station.

Charles Taylor - Charles_Taylor@xxxxxxxxxxxx
1070 WNCT NC Greenville: Is NOT s/off @ 2400, contrariwise to what I
e-messaged earlier. They apparently go to Beach Music format at
midnight. They're Hispanic/Mexican weekdays 1500-2400. Probably
Dr. Laura Schlessinger 1000-1200 (or whenever she starts)
weekdays.
Their programming is a mish-mash mess. As long as management is
satisfied that their programs will draw minimal listenership,
they're happy. That's why the XE programming will have to go: it
appears to be too popular, judging by the number of ads per hour.
Runs six towers on NW side of Greenville near Tar River. The
array is broadside, with max signal off the east side of the
array. Nearly non-directional days. Nights quickly drops off west
of Greenville and is soon kicked and stomped by WIBC-1070.
(CAT/NC).
While heading home this AM 0000-0100, I checked in on WNCT-1070 to see
what, if anything, they were doing in an attempt to impersonate a BC
station this morning.
At every check, they were running open carrier. I suspect that this is
management's final attempt to drive away a fellow who lives on 620 S.
Memorial Boulevard, Greenville. He was WNCT's last documented listener.
Usually at this time of day, they appear to be programming Beach Music.
There are, however, poor unsuspecting students at East Carolina
University who fall for this ruse. Last semester, at least three
students were known to have listened to WNCT. This greatly angered
WNCT's management. Their reaction was to fire the last employee at WNCT,
a blind janitor, who reportedly accidentally activated an old tape
machine that broadcast an entertaining program until the error was
rectified.

Mark Connelly - WA1ION@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Greetings to all. The old WCC tower in South Chatham was recently
demolished. WCC, owned by RCA and later MCI, operated good old Morse
code for ship-to-shore service on 436 kHz and sometimes on the former
distress channel of 500 kHz just below the AM broadcast band. This
station, running big power out of the middle of a salt marsh, had a
killer signal all over the northeastern US and adjacent Canada. It was
frequently logged in Europe. I heard it well in Ireland back in 1977.
I wonder where all the WCC equipment is going to go. Likely there were
some excellent receivers and transmitters on the premises, as well as
test equipment, tools, and parts. I'd rather see DXers and hams recycle
it than have it all get buried or incinerated somewhere.
