KXTA-1150, Los Angeles, CA tested Monday, February 8, 1999 from
4:00-8:00 am ET:

Partick Martin of Seaside, OR reports he caught this test on a Drake R8
with a terminated 200' ENE "U" antenna.

KLOE-730, Goodland, KS tested Saturday, February 6, 1999 from 5:00-7:00
am ET:

This one may or may not have run; no response has been received from the
station. Charles Mikelson in Winnipeg, MB reports he tried for this
test, but it was masked by a station 210 mi from him.

CHUC-1450, Cobourg, ON tested Saturday, February 6, 1999 from 12:00-6:00
am ET:

John J. Rieger in South Milwaukee, WI reports to IRCA's SDXM that he
heard this one good with oldies and Ad/Con music, but no march music or
code IDs were heard. Neil Kazaross in Barrington, IL heard this from
0000-0020, but also reports that there was no indication that this was a
DX test. Charles Mikelson in Winnipeg, MB says CHUC's signal was too
garbled for him to make out clearly.

WQSN-1660, Kalamazoo, MI tested daily thru February, 1999 with CW IDs at
the top of each hour:

Charles Mikelson in Winnipeg, MB reports he heard this test with a "The
Sports Station AM sixteen sixty WQSN Kalamazoo" at 2 am CST on 2/6/99.

KTGG 1540 TEST

Did anyone hear this? Were they on? I think I caught Morse Code at about

but there was no answer.

Heard KEYZ test

I heard the test here in Denver. I listened during the first 30
minutes of the test and I only heard the call letters in code once at
0105 EST. The code came through very nice and loud. But that was all I
heard between 0105 to 0130. KTNN was very strong and there was also an
UNID Spanish station loud at times also.

**Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

The KEYZ 660 test was interesting as according to the DJ I spoke with at
the station, KEYZ was operating with their Night time directional
pattern all thetime, except during the code/tone periods. or the few
seconds they would go to their Day pattern, then go back to the Night
Pattern. The CE said that legally the had to pretty much stay on their
night pattern but could cut away briefly with the code & tone. Here o
the Northern Oregon coast all that I could ID was the code & tones too.
According to the pattern maps, KEYZ's night signal is almost like a
bullit to the North. Their Day Patern puts more signal in other
directions.

***Nigel Pimblett - Medicine Hat AB - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Heard the KEYZ test here in Alberta too, though only the code IDs.
Lots of CFFR and KTNN made it impossible to hear anything more.

Came home, turned on radio, there was KSMH-1620 testing (first time
logging for me), caught 45 min. on tape. Only this time, they were
testing way past their normal 5 PM cutoff time, nice ID on tape at 5:45
PM as "This is KSMH, Catholic Radio, AM 1620, Auburn-Sacramento, on the
air for equipment testing. Catholic Radio KSMH, AM 1620, is pleased to
begin the testing phase of its construction. While this process
proceeds, you will be able to hear a sample of what our normal
broadcasts will contain. Your comments are welcome and can be made by
writing to Catholic Radio, KSMH, in care of Immaculate Heart Radio, PO.

generous individuals who have pledged their support of the ministry of
Catholic Radio, support without which we would be unable to be
broadcasting today. If you would like more information on KSMH's

again is 916-648-1145. KSMH is named after the Sacrament Most Holy,

blessed Lord will grant this radio ministry to the Sacramento Valley,

Heard on a GE Superadio III, Kenwood R-1000 and 60' longwire:

580 KFXD Nampa, ID 0705 2/11 with an ID out of a whole pile of
stations. I believe KFXD was playing country music. New Log.

I am interested in who else is on in AM stereo. This was scanned about
2000 - 2100 ET 2/15. I am sure there are others but they weren't on when
I scanned the dial tonight.

660 KEYZ ND, WILLISTON. came in fair at times only during Morse Code
IDs. Called station and was told the only time KEYZ was using
their "Daytime pattern" was during the Morse Code IDs. Otherwise
it was only Nightime pattern. The best code ID was at 0305 EST
2/15. Other times it was weaker. New. Taped report sent. My 1500'
Eastern Beverage was the only antenna I could hear it on! KTNN
QRM, no sign of CFFR. (PM-OR)
1540t KTGG MI, SPRING HARBOR, possibly heard with continuous Morse
Code at 0110 EST 2/14, mixing with KXEL and others on channel.
The code sounds like "KTGG", but uncertain. Going to send a
       tentative taped report. (PM-OR)
1630 KKWY WY, CHEYENNE fair on top of KDNZ w/C&W mx, ABC News, weather
forecast at 0800-0810 EST 2/15, IDs as "KWY-1630" and "KWY
Classic Country". The signal is better now, but still weaker than
       other X Banders. (PM-OR)

The past couple of nights I have noticed that KLDC 800 khz in
Brighton, CO. has been very strong. Completely covering the Ciudad
Juarez station here in Denver. I never have heard KLDC in my part of
Denver at night before so they must have upped the power or not been
turning it down at night. Last night this was at 0130 EST (2/14). They
were mainly playing Gospel Music.

Strong influenza made me being for about one week in bed. It was so
strong that did not even allow me to DX but only to look into some
standard VHF services wih the MVT7100 and much TV ? . Instead of it I
could do some Dx only on this weekend when I was a little better ( and
still I m not 100 % well! )

1. Following the commentary for modifications on the 1026 antenna
shadowing unit, I have removed the input filter parts that considerably
increased the reception and null outs on MW. But not so much on the lW
band though there is some minor enhancement . ON the MW part you will
find some interesting logs with the use of the 1026

2. The web page is again under some updates. Now you can find the latest
news from pirates and very soon you will find soe valuable scanner info
. However for safety reasons the scanner report in a text file will be
sent ONLY by email

***

**Charles A. Taylor - CALLTaylor@xxxxxxxx

Without ripping into a TRF and a Superadio, or whatever, or whatsuch;
it's impossible to answer your question directly. I'd suppose that Tandy
took more than average care in designing the 12-655, and most especially
in placement of the antenna loopstick with respect to other components,
especially the speaker or the sliderule dial body (two massive metal
assemblies).

FYI, RAMSEY ELECTRONICS, also of upstate NY, sells the Wave Magnet (I

electrostatically shielded, and appears to be similar to the SM.

If anyone is interested, I'll look up the web URL.

reverse the speaker leads, which he says transformed it into a better
radio than his II. Any comments or has anyone has any experience with
that "mod"?

Also, does anybody have the Radio Shack "Superadio"? Any comments on it
versus the GE II or III?

Most of the comments that I've heard indicate that the RS rx is a "nice"
radio but that the Superadio II still runs rings around it, at least as
far as the AM band is concerned.

I don't think that Radio Shack "got it", even after the TRF (12-655), as
far as serving DX'ers and those who still try to listen to ball games
from their home town across the continent. Oddly enough, the Sharp
Corporation "got it" but lost it - their FV-610 was a very nice little
portable, sensitive and selective on the AM and FM bands (fair on SW and
LW). But they never produced another decent DX rig after that.

kAnd there have been others who have produced successful one-offs and
then gave up trying to produce rx's for the "high-end" user, meaning
DX'ers and others who really needed sensitivity and selectivity, over
wide-band sound, etc. Maybe only GE and SONY "got it" and continue to
produce superior DX rigs, such as the ICF-2010? What happened to
Panasonic, who used to produce nice portable DX rigs (RF-2200, RF-2900)?
Is Sangean "getting it" or about to "get it", with their $159.99 rig
produced for CCrane? Finally, just how difficult and/or expensive is
it, really, to mass-produce a tuner/amp such as the assembly found in
the 12-655 and include it in various permutations of receivers found 20
years after the original TRF?

I have heard the same thing about older units pre 1994. I can say that I
have played with a GE SRII and use a GE SRIII and as far as I am
concerned the GE SRIII after 1994 is WAY better than the SR II. There
are many who will disagree with my assessment, but I will stand by it
all the way.

Undoubtedly you are talking about the 12-603 model. I own its cousin the
12-604a. Looks about the same as the 12-603 and also receives TV channel
2-69. The guts are very similar to the 12-603 so I figure that what
comments I will make about the 12-604A will be the same as the 12-603.

The RS Optimus version of the Superadio [has the same circuit board
inside] is NOT as good as the GE SRIII or SRII. The ferrite rod is 2"
shorter, FM aerial is 2" shorter. The speaker is 1" smaller. The set
although good and better than most is not a GE Superadio. It is not even
the equal of my Zenith Royal 94. The AM is equal but the Zenith has far
better FM and is my portable of choice for FM DX.

The 12-604A dial calibration is one place that is a trillion times
better than the GE SRIII and on the Optimus rig the calibration is dead
nuts spot on in the AM and FM sections.

The 12-603 and its cousin 12-604A are both good radios. The 12-603 is
slightly less expensive than the SRIII but I would spend the extra $10
and get the SRIII. It is well worth the extra small amount.

Thats about the size of it with the SRIII as well. It is better than
most but just isn't as good. Like I said in another message the FM is
not as good as my old Zenith Royal 94 and it was made in the mid to late
50s.
