Here's the results of the most recent DX tests that have been received
here:
KICY-850, Nome, AK tested Saturday, January 23, 1999 from 12:00-12:15 am
Alaska Time (4:00-4:15 am ET):
Pat Martin had no sign of KICY on his 900' beverage in Seaside, OR. In
Mesa, AZ, Ragnar Danneskjold was also unable to hear them - he says he
heard too much KOA instead. J.D. Stephens in Madison, AL didn't hear
KICY, either, nor did Tim Noonan of Madison, WI, though he reports KOA
and CKVL were in, and Mike Saltmarsh in Goodyear, AZ (about 20 mi WSW of
Phoenix) also reports he heard KOA, but nothing underneath.
WJAS-1320, Pittsburgh, PA tested Sunday, January 24, 1999 from 1:05-1:15
am ET:
J.D. Stephens in Madison, AL, reports that the test evidently didn't
run, as he heard them with regular programming only at this time. Tim
Noonan in Madison, WI also reports he tried for and didn't hear this
test, as does Randy Miltier in Ashland, OR.
WPTT-1360, McKeesport, PA tested Sunday, January 24, 1999 from 1:15-1:25
am ET:
J.D. Stephens in Madison, AL, tried for this test, but heard only
regular programming. Tim Noonan in Madison, WI, and Randy Miltier in
Ashland, OR also mentioned trying for this test but not hearing it.
KHMO-1070, Hannibal, MO tested Monday, January 25, 1999 from 1:00-3:00
am ET:
Bob Karchevski in Sunnyvale, CA says KNX-CA dominated on this frequency,
and he used a MFJ-1026mw to hear a second station (which he thinks may
have been CFAX-BC). He then switched to a 4' box loop and nulled KNX,
but no second station was heard - nothing that may have been tones or
code, either. Randy Miltier in Ashland, OR reports that he heard no KHMO
test, that KNX is kinda the king on 1070. Pat Martin on the Oregon coast
reports no sign of the test, though plenty of KNX/WTSO/CFAX/UNID NOS
station/UNID SS station, and he asks if the test was a no-show.
WFIW-1390, Faifield, IL tested Monday, January 25, 1999 at 2:00, 3:00,
4:00, 5:00, 6:00 am ET:
Pat Martin reports no sign of this one at his QTH in Oregon. Randy
Miltier in Ashland, OR reports he heard KSLM-Salem, OR on this frequency
with an ID as "Sports Radio 910, The Fan". Bob Karchevski in Sunnyvale,
CA says KVIN-CA was the strongest on this frequency, and he also heard a
REL station (possibly KLTX-CA?), but no code or tones.

Heard a very nice clear ID on the top of the hour at 1:00 AM 1/15/99 as
"Gold Country, 1470 AM, KRAK Sacramento", no more mention of KOME, so
there's no doubt they are KRAK now, or else they are not legally ID'ing
correctly, hi!

Sheldon Harvey - ve2shw@xxxxxxxxx
January 19, 1999
I have just received information from a source within the head office of
Radio-Canada in Montreal, who wishes to remain anonymous, that the
French language CBC AM outlet on 690 kHz. CBF (which has been
simulcasting on 95.1 MHz. since January 1998) will be going silent at
some point overnight Thursday night into Friday morning. The exact time
was not known, but it was indicated that the 690 kHz. should be silent
as of 5 AM Eastern time Friday morning, January 22, 1999.
It is not known at this time if the same will happen with the English
network station on 940 kHz., CBM, which has been simulcasting on 88.5
MHz. FM. I am looking into this story and will forward further
information when available.
CRTC hearing are being held in Montreal on February 15, 1999, where six
different applications are being heard regarding the two frequencies
(690 kHz. and 940 kHz.)
One of the applications is by the CBC to reclaim the frequency of 690
kHz. to be used for their new proposed French language news and
information service. CBC has also applied for 940 kHz. should their
application for 690 be turned down. Mount Royal broadcasting is
applying for both 690 and 940 to be used for their two current AM
stations CKVL 850 kHz. and CIQC 600 kHz. respectively.
Radio-Nord, a company based in Hull, Quebec, is also applying for both
frequencies, to be used for new English and French country music AM
stations.
The feeling within the broadcast community in Montreal at this point
seems to give CBC the inside track to retain the 690 kHz. frequency, and
for CKVL-850 kHz. to obtain the 940 frequency. This will all be decided
by the CRTC at the hearing to be held in Montreal on February 15, 1999
at the Holiday Inn at 99 Viger Street. These hearings are open to the
public.
It will be interesting to see if Mount Royal Broadcasting and Radio-Nord
use the CBC's claims against them in the hearings. CBC made a lot of
noise when they applied to move their two AM stations to FM, telling the
CRTC that the radio listenership was moving away from AM and that they
needed to move to FM to stay competitive. They also claimed that the FM
signals would serve their listeners with a better, stronger and clearer
signal. Now they re-apply for one of the AM frequencies which they
wanted to get away from. It should be most interesting.
In an unrelated story, I have obtained information that the new French
language station licensed by the CRTC, CJMS for 1320 kHz. in St.
Constant, Quebec, not yet on the air, has applied for a frequency
change. They have requested 1040 kHz. The station had hoped to be on the
air by the beginning of the year (1999). The new target date is now
March 1999. This will obviously be dependent on their application to
move frequency, as tower work will be required should the application be
approved.
If you have any questions on any of this material, please feel free to
contact me. I will forward any material on the situation with CBM 940
kHz. as soon as it is available.

Well, we were all poised to DX 690 kHz. to death with the shutdown of
CBF 690 kHz. yesterday around midnight (Jan21 into Jan22), but after a
special farewell announcement to listeners around 11:57 PM, the station
switched into a tape loop telling listeners that the station had ceased
operations on AM and could be found on FM 95.1. Also giving telephone
numbers where listeners could call if they were having reception
problems with the FM signal.
I guess we should have expected this to happen. Now the question is just
how long will this announcement keep running. Stay tuned, DXers.

The tape loop being run by CBF 690 kHz. informing listeners of the
switch to FM disappeared yesterday evening. I checked a little after
midnight eastern time and it was gone. Nothing there this morning
either. Unfortunately, no DX found last evening or this morning, just a
horrendous buzzing sound on this frequency. Not sure if it is local, or
if other were hearing it.
TIME TO DX!! Start checking out 690 kHz. around sunset and throughout
the evening. Let me know what you are hearing. Have fun!

I am one of the engineers at WLAC and as of last Friday, we began
operating at 12.5kW non-directional at night while we upgrade our
facility with a new phasor, ATU's, feedlines, and a new DX50. I would
much appreciate hearing from others around the country on our signal as
compared to the 50kW directional that we normally run.
Where are we getting to that we had not before? Where are we not
getting to? Our directional signal covers the southeastern quarter of
the country quite well but puts nulls toward Boston and Spokane. Anyone
in those directions hearing us now?

According to my latest new M Street Journal, KZPM-1100 is either on the
air now or will be on the air shortly with a Spanish format. Can anyone
in the so. California area confirm if they are indeed on? I suspect
they put a null towards KFAX and towards Arizona (KFNX), as well as
Colorado, so a good chunk of their power may go west into the ocean?
I'll check the FCC database on this.

No, for now 1460 will be only testing daytime, getting groundwave set
and going tower by tower, then getting it up to 10kw and then getting
the pattern right etc, so it will be a long and slow process, but the ce
says you will notice more music/audio during the daytime this week, as
the Clear Channel technical consultant has sent two other engineers to
help with the xmtr and tower site...Our CE is Mike Blankenbeckler,
better known as "Radio Mike"....His email is radiomic@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I've already given that address to Rich Toebe...Gosh, 1460's been off
since around 1991, haven't you heard everything on the frequency you're
going to hear already?! Hi....Oh, well, good things can't last forever,
sorry, but it's not my fault...They're sharing KCTY-980's new tower site
NE of Salinas off Old Natividad Road..KCTY is also supposed to go 10kw
day, don;'t know what their night power will be...1460 will be
10/10....We were hoping it would simulcast KOCN, Oldies 105, but Mike
had to get the order in for new equipment, since all our stations move
into new offices and studios with new equipment in the next few
months...So, looks like 1460 will be a "classic country" format from
Jones Sat. Network when it goes on air, likely with different calls...
So, try 1460 again during daytime tomorrow and every day for next
several weeks,...I'll let everyone know when night testing will
begin...Mike says he will do DX test for club if he can get remote
control set up so he won't have to go to xmtr site in middle of night,
but that will still be quite a while from now..

Checked Sunday afternoon on 1460, found an open carrier, and then at
12:55 PM, ID "At 1460 on the AM Dial, this is KTXX, Salinas". ID was
repeated every 5 minutes, maybe a loop tape? Signal only poor-fair,
didn't sound like 10 kw. at all, I think they were running 1 kw. or 2
kw. per Jim Hilliker. Sounds like just a matter of time till they're
on, sigh...

KTRB, 860, was off the air when I got in the car at about 0445 this
morning. They were still off the air by the time I got to work at 0535.
I could hear a fairly strong SS in their place. I don't speak Spanish,
but I did hear them mention San Diego a couple of times.
KTRB has been off several times recently. Once most of the night and
way into the morning. I have not called them so I am not sure why, but
if it continues to happen it might present opportunities to hear
something new. I just thought I'd pass this on.
(SS is probably XEMO - various)

>From Laurie Boyer in Invercargill comes news that Radio Sport in Timaru,
South Canterbury, New Zealand (transmitter located at St. Andrews) has
moved from 1071 to 1494kHz.
A reply from Geoff Berry at Radio Sport about the Timaru frequency
change...
We had to re-channel Radio Sport in Timaru because we were un-successful
at winning 1071kHz in the recent radio freq auction. As far as I know
the change is permanent. Thank you for your comment about the co-channel
interference from 1494kHz in Taupo. Our Tx has to reduce power at night
time to avoid interference from Timaru to Taupo so this would make the
interference coming the other way more noticeable. If you have a chance
to record some of this on cassette tape and send it to me at PO Box 4292
New Plymouth I would appreciate it.

CFMY, the FM station replacing CJCY 1390 in Medicine Hat has been
testing for the past month and is now broadcasting a tape loop
announcing that the official sign-on will be at 8:00 am on Monday,
February 1st. Meanwhile CJCY is broadcasting as normal with occasional
announcements that Medicine Hat's first FM station will be on the air in
4 days. After the s/on CJCY will be simulcasting the FM, but for how
long I haven't been able to find out yet.
Incidentally CJCY was off the air for about an hour this evening for
unrelated reasons, giving me an inkling of what I'll be hearing in a few
months.

Last night I heard someone under KKTR 1650 but couldn't pull them out.
Who else is on 1650?
***
Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
You've got KDNZ - Cedar Falls, IA. They have been there for a few
months. It is a regular here on the North Coast.
***
ragnar danneskjold - Mesa AZ - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx
Do they have a non music format? It sounded like a talk or news program.
I couldn't null out KKTR to get them more clearly.

I heard KSMH 1620 driving home this evening. Caught them between 4:45
and 5pm PST. They were running Catholic programming, but they are only
in test mode. Signal strength varied while I was listening. The ID
just before 5 mentioned that they are beginning the testing phase of
their construction, and gave a Tahoma CA address. Abruptly went silent
at 5.

1620 KSMH Tahoma, CA 1958 1/29 "Beginning Testing". Gave an address of
Catholic Radio KSMH Immaculate Heart Radio, Takoma, CA 96142 and
the name given to contact was Dave Leatherby. Off air here due to
power drop at 1958.

1620 KSMH CA, AUBURN good well on top of KYIZ in the middle of the
day, with Cath. Rel. programming, nice ID at 1557 EST 1/31, with
full ID, as "KSMH, AM 1620, Auburn", with mailing address and
phone number, asking for comments. Thx to everyone for the tips.

1620 CA, Auburn KSMH poor to fair; ID at 1657 "KSMH AM 1620
Auburn-Sacramento, Catholic Family Radio". Other Sacramento area
big signals (KHTK, KFBK, KSTE) were about the same strength but
more difficult to copy because of splatter.

Pat, KSMH was on this afternoon. I caught them at about 2pm while
coming home from shopping. Excellent signal; at 2 they mentioned their
call ID and that SMH stands for Sacrament Most Holy! I was worried
they'd already gone to RS; checked again two minutes ago--they're off.

Is WNML the only station on 1670 doing sports? If so, I heard them here
(Santa Barbara) on my car radio (1995 Saturn; a pretty decent radio) at
8:15 tonite California time; must be pretty good conditions. Usually,
KDIA, KKTR, KXOL, and 1690 Colorado (not sure of call; I know it just
changed; is it KADZ? My usual online database; radiostation.com is not
responding tonight) are about all I hear out here. Also a weak station
on 1630; what was that probably; KKWY? Regarding KKTR, I know they just
changed their city of license from Costa Mesa to Torrance; one of my
online database sources says it's (or was?) a 2 site operation, and I
saw that they applied to drop power to below 1 KW at night. Does anybody
know if the 2 site info is (or was?) correct? Is the reason they're
dropping to below 1 KW at night so they can be a 1 site operation?
I'm not used to hearing much besides the 4 listed above; I can't stay up
all night and be of any use at work at 8:00 AM. I've tried changing my
body clock for DX'ing on weekends; my body said "I don't think so".
Can somebody tell me about the Realistic TRF? I've heard some pretty
incredible things about it. What makes it so great? What's a reasonable
price to pay for one in mint condition?

OK I have gotten 4 new stations since Jan 1 and ALL have been Radio
Disney. I am almost longing for the old days of Larry King and Rush
Limblah. ALMOST!!! Well as they spread out across the band I can get
new ones which will all have MK or DZ in the call. Hey what happened to
Donald Duck and all the other Disney creatures? Just think how easy it
would be to spot a station where all the announcers sounded like Donald.
NO tooooooo easy!!!

The Coorong DXpedition - South Australia January 11 - 15
Attending were Dave Onley & Craig Edwards
Receivers
2 x SPR4's
Trio 9R59 DS
3 x 600m beverages
1 x 250m longwire
We had a few decent nights in Adelaide in sweltering 43C heat before
heading to the Coorong for some Dx. Craig Edwards and I have had some
terrific catches at this site over the years and my expectations were
quite high. We both left the shack on the Friday morning (15/1) feeling
rather disappointed in the trip. However after typing up the trail it
wasn't such a bad effort after all.
As for the Europeans it was pretty poor. There were the odd stations
around such as VOA Rhodes on 1260, Novi Sad 1269, Radio Monte Carlo
1233, BRT Belgium 1512 and the Vatican on 1611. These were all the
powerhouse stations however and there were no signs of 1296 BBC
Orfordness, 1359 Spain, 1413 Pristiva, 1431 Ukraine, 1287 RFE Litomysl
etc. The list goes on. The interesting observation was that the Middle
Eastern stations were quite strong but that extra bit of distance tended
to snuff out the Euro's.
The big surprise of the trip was the strength of the Filipino stations.
I have to admit that one 600-meter beverage was pointed directly at the
Philippines. We got two decent shots at the Philippines just on their
sunset and again on our sunrise. Some of them would stay in all night or
until sign/off but most peaked on the greyline, which was quite
interesting. The Indonesians made the odd appearance 1206 RRI Denpasar
was down on previous years however it was good to hear personal new ones
such as 909 RRI Sorong and RRI Jambi on 1098. The only Africans to show
their heads were VOA Sao Tome on 1530 and Maralal Kenya on 1386.
We used 3 beverage antennas. We aimed 600m at Central Africa, 600m at
Central Europe, 600m at the Philippines and 250m at Japan. It was
interesting experimenting with terminating the beverages and using
proper earthing. I have come to the conclusion that earthing plays a
very big part. When you play with big antennas the earth bleeds noise
away and can be the key to getting that extra S-point. We had a terrific
ground at the receiver end in the form of an old rail line used as a
clothesline. After scrapping some rust off I was amazed at the jump in
signal when we connected it to the matching transformer. At the receiver
end we used two pre-amps which were acted as splitters, we could use two
receivers off the one antenna without any loss. The preamps worked well
mid afternoon and early evening for the groundwave signals however after
dark there was far too much overloading and images. From the preamps we
ran coax out of the shack to the bevs via a small balun (20metres) Both
ends of the coax were grounded as were the beverages via a 600 ohm
resistor and copper pipe (Not ideal but ok) We used the 3 receivers 2
Drake SPR-4's and my trusty old Trio 9R-59DS which can still work
miracles given the opportunity.
Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have my web page updated with some
photos and interesting stories. You can find my MW page at
http://www.vds.com.au/~donley/dxing.html I suppose the next big trip
will be at Easter.

Special 690 Report
With CBF off the air, I decided to sit on the frequency during the
sunset hours to see what would appear. With one exception, all of these
have appeared before, over, under or through CBF. As each station
powered down or changed patterns, the next one would appear, just like
1580 kHz of old. Column editors, I will include these items in the
correct format in my subsequent report.
Date: JAN 26, 1999
Times in EST (UTC-5)
1630 WZAP VA Bristol, call letters, local ads, then preaching program
("Are you headed for the lake of fire?") If you are, I suppose
you could contact WZAP for assistance!
1655 WOKV FL Jacksonville, news, traffic, Mighty 690 slogan, call
letters.
1701 WPHE PA Phoenixville, Spanish music and talk had been weak under
the others, until this time when I heard a portion of the station
address (in Spanish), as shown in the NRC Log, then gone.
1724 WJQX AL Birmingham, IDing as "The Jock" and "WJOX", local ads and
traffic, mentioned simulcast on "JBY".
1754 UNID Tony Kornheiser Show (national sports call-in), ad for
Mobile Cellular Unlimited (612-955-0445), possible slogan as "The
Score". 612 Area Code is Minneapolis, so perhaps KXBR (C&W in
NRC Log)? Your help appreciated!
1800 KGGF KS Coffeyville, Calls at top of hour into ABC news, auto
dealer ad for Independence KS, then David _____ with local and
state news. New!
1825 COLOMBIA, R. Recuerdo, probably the one that faded in with

I need some help on an unid. Does anyone out there know which network
carries the oldies network with the slogan "Good Times, Great Oldies"? I
heard an unid. on 1230 loop NE this afternoon using this slogan, over
KWG-1230 Stockton (not KWG), carrying this network (is it WW1 oldies??),
they had a program going called 'Dave's Diner', with an 800 no.
1-800-765-8833, but there is no listing for this no. anywhere on the
Internet nor in the 800 Toll-Free Directory. I think this may be
KBAR-ID., but are there any other possibilites it could be? Any help is
appreciated. Thanks. This was about 4:30 PM, PST on 1/14/99.

Heard a SS station 1/15/99 0445UTC with Caracol noticias (news) and
"Radio Noticias 9-20" slogan. Announcer would start a news story by
saying "Caracol Santiago" or "Caracol Tegucigalpa". Most news stories
focused on South America locations. This is probably Colombia, but don't
have a current WRTH to be sure. Ideas?
Also, per John Wilkins: XETAA-920 is now XERCA (in // with FM XHRCA

The CARACOL "Ronda Centroamericana" and "ROnda Latinoamericana" are a

Is anyone else in the West (or elsewhere) hearing a het on 1360 today?
This morning, someone with a sports format was on top of KPOP and
seemingly causing a het. The same thing is happening this evening, the
only difference being that no one is dominating the frequency. This is
the first time I've noticed it.
There's also been a het on 560 here (Southern California) at night for
years; I've never heard anyone else report it. Am I the only one hearing
it? If not, does anyone have an idea who it is that's off frequency?
***
*Ralph Sanserino - sanser@xxxxxxx
Dennis: It is now 3:20 AM PST and the het is still there on 1360.
There is a sports format station there and someone playing music, sports
station just peaked at 3:40 AM talking about hockey no ID of course. Het
seems to be on the low side of 1360. 1370 also has a het and so does
560, like you said the 560 het has been there for years.

KGME Glendale, AZ. They are on with 50kW days and increased power at
night and with the time of year it is very possible you are hearing
them.
I hear it here in AZ too but I have no idea who it is.

*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I forgot to mention that I heard this in the car (1995 Saturn; a good
radio); the first time was about 7:30 yesterday morning. I've never
heard any other hets besides the one on 560. Perhaps someone is
forgetting (intentionally or otherwise) to switch power and/or pattern
when they're supposed to?
They're probably the one who was on top of KPOP. The databases I've been
consulting show the 50KW as a CP; in going from 5KW to 50KW, they
probably had to buy a new transmitter. Maybe it's off frequency? Does
your DX440 show that they're on frequency, or slightly off?

Dennis: This is the first time I have heard it. It is now 6:10 PM PST

*Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
It would appear that whoever's off frequency is somewhere in the
vicinity of 100 hertz low (I think a little more); that's the smallest
increment that my Sony ICF-2010 will tune. Unfortunately, I've got so
much KPOP right now that the only directions I can hear the het are in
its nulls; not terribly helpful in figuring out what direction its
coming from. Can anybody with a better radio (frequency display wise)
and less KPOP help out on this?
Unfortunately, my body clock is not interested in letting me switch to
staying awake during prime DX'ing hours (midnight and later) on the
weekends, then back to a regular awake schedule (working 8 AM to 4:30
PM) during the work week. I'd be interested in hearing from anybody who
successfully does this; especially what you did and how long it took to
get acclimated to it.

*Albert Lehr - ALehr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I did some checking with my frequency measurement system before sunset.
The off-frequency station was on 1360.1826 kHz. KGME was on about
1359.994 kHz and drifting +/- 1 Hz or so. KFIV was on 1360.0035 kHz.
The loud het didn't allow much audio to get through from the
off-frequency station, but at 1640 PST my sync detector managed to
extract some NOS music. With my loop antenna I got a bearing of roughly
140 degrees. It seems very likely that the offending station is KPOP.

Subject: Re: Het on 1360

Dennis,
You recently mentioned that, "A number of AM DX'ers in the West,
including myself, have noticed that a het has recently appeared on 1360
when stations outside California are coming in. The concensus seems to
be that it's KPOP that's off frequency, but no one in the group with
precise frequency measuring equipment is close enough to San Diego to
measure them on ground wave."
Based on your message, I listened to 1360 kHz early yesterday morning
in my car and heard a strong heterodyne that I thought was over 100 Hz
but less than 1000 Hz. This evening at 1650 PST, I measured KPOP, 1360
kHz, San Diego, from our lab in Fallbrook. I confirmed that KPOP is in
fact off frequency. KPOP is now operating on 1360.183 kHz, or 183 Hz
above its FCC-assigned slot. This obviously exceeds the +/- 20 Hz
tolerance allowed by the FCC.
(Our company provides monthly frequency measurements for most of the
AM & FM stations in the San Diego - Los Angeles corridor, including
KPOP, so you wrote to the right person. KPOP was "on frequency" the
last time we checked which was on 1/6/99; we measure their frequency
once a month.)
Based on the discovery that KPOP is now off frequency, I notified the
local Director of Engineering for that group of radio stations and he
will contact KPOP's Chief Engineer immediately. KPOP's transmitter has
been stable, but every once in a while something unusual will happen at
any station. Perhaps a stuck crystal oven. I'll let you know if I find
out.
Many thanks for your keen observations! You conducted your listening
tests from Santa Barbara, correct?
Best regards, Bob

Well, I got lucky on this one. There is an online newsletter for
broadcast engineering types in Southern California called the CGC
Communicator, which I subscribe to. I submitted a story about the het to
see if anybody within ground wave could measure KPOP's frequency, since
the consensus was that they were the likely culprit. It turns out that
the editor's company has a contract to measure KPOP's frequency once a
month. It had been measured about 3 weeks ago, and was within spec (plus
or minus 20 hertz) then. He measured it today as being 138 hertz high.
He contacted their CE, and the problem was fixed within a few hours.

Raising a beverage and straightening it out abit can sure make a
difference. I live on the Northern Oregon Coast of North America just
North of Seaside. I run two beverages along with other antennas. One
beverage runs at about 350 degrees to the NNW through the brambles. With
all the high winds we have on the North Coast in the Winter months,
quite often limbs and trees will blow down on top of the antenna in
places. I got out yesterday and pulled the wire from under trees, limbs,
brambles, and the like to straighten it out and it now runs about 5 feet
off the Ground, fairly straight. I gained about an S-Unit and the
directivity is sure better. Tonight CX seem very AU, and I am getting
some of the weaker interior BC stations alone on the frequency off the
Norhern Beverage like CFLD-760-Burns Lake all alone. It isn't heard on
any other antennas including my 40' vertical. So the improvement did
help alot. It will be interesting to see when CX get better to the
North. The beverage is also terminated at the far end in swampy soil. It
pays to check the antennas once in a while. That is for sure!

Plans for an antenna phasing unit, the DXP-1, may be downloaded from
Werner Funkenhauser's Web site. Point your browser to
"http://home.inforamp.net/~funk/page6.html" and scroll a bit less than
halfway down the page to the "Speciality antennas" header.
Text of the introduction may be obtained ("

complete documentation may be downloaded to a disk directory of your
choosing.
When you use an industry-standard decompression utility such as WinZip
or PKZIP, you will find that the DXP1.ZIP archive contains several text
files, BMP drawings, and an Excel worksheet: these documents should
provide the avid electronics do-it-yourselfer all the details needed to
build one of these units.
DXers of the 100-2000 kHz frequency range will find, as the article
states, that the DXP-1 DXpedition Phasing Unit "picks up where the
MFJ-1026 left off".

I've never been to St. Petersburg, FL, but the bulk of my DXing over the
past year and a half has been done from southeast Alabama and I've
noticed the stations from St. Pete and the Tampa Bay area get in there
very well. By southeast Alabama, I mean about 20 miles north of Dothan.
I suspect the big thing you will notice down there will be all the SS
stations, both in the US and from throughout the Caribbean area. If you
don't know that language, you may have problems. I don't bother to wait
for IDs with the stations--I just keep on going down the dial.
You might also find that DX to Texas/ LA/ MS might be real good there
because of the water path.
