13650 MRA IBB Tinian, 1043 VoA in Ch; translation E to Ch, 1054 ID, adr,
1058 s/off, 0=3 (Jan 16)

PRU: No signals heard on 6479.7, 6535.7, 6895.3; O 1-2 on 4975.2, 6497.7
Propagation was reported as excellent (Jan 14), bad (Jan 15), good (Jan 16).

Equipment: Lowe HF 150 (Franta-modified)
Antennas: HF 30 (British product) which did a very good job compared to a
trap dipole for 60 and 90 meters. The HF 30 was mounted on a 10 m tower,
where the dipole was also fixed at as an inverted-V.

The HF 30 brought about one S-unit (6 dB in RS code) less signal than the
dipole on 60 and even on 90 m. I wouldn_t have expected that. In the range
between 6.4 to 7.0 MHz the HF 30 gave the better results, about 4 dB better
than the dipole. Regarding noise, there was no difference between this two
antennas.
The HF 30 is a kind of broomstick antenna, with 5 coils mounted on a 1,4 m
aluminium pipe. Regarding the above comparison, it will have be to found
out if there are influences between the two antennas. Maybe the dipole had
some positive effects as a radial system for the vertical antenna.

For frequencies above 6 MHz I am usually using a vertical quad (which is
part of the Telescope Antenna System TAS). This is the best combination of
low noise and good signal levels, mounted in less than 20 minutes. Good for
DX camps, but due to heavy rain I trusted the already existing antennas,
when I arrived for a one day paticipance. Antenna signals were splitted to
up to 8 receivers via an old military antenna splitter from the former GDR
troups ;-)

Willi
