Here is a new station (or call change) from Mexico on 920kHz. The call
ID heard by John Wilkins (and I heard the tape) was XERCN-920 and
XHRCN-102.7FM "Estereo Joya". Anyone have any ideas? Nothing listed on
the Cantu web site.
There is a college station in North Denver at Regis College. It is now
on 1530kHz. (ex-1490) and identifies as "KRCX" (not to be confused with
KRCX on 1110kHz). Format is progressive rock. This station gets out well
so must be using more than 10 watts. Thanks to John Wilkins for tip.
Also from John Wilkins: 1060-KBNB has powered up early at least once.
So, be on the lookout for them! He logged them at 0545 MST moments
before local KLMO came on.

This sounds like a free radiate station. They are popping up all over.
I have one here locally on 1630.For further information see,

Noticed in the latest AM DX Newsflash (and 'confirmed' by my new M
Street just gotten today), that 1580 is now KMIK, ex-KCWW.
Well...
I just checked at 7 PM, PST on Saturday 12/12/98, and despite all this,
they still said:
"Radio Disney is KCWW, Tempe-Phoenix!"....

Radio Progreso 890. I have been hearing it alot this past week. I wonder
if they boosted power. The strongest Cuban listed on the freq. is 10 KW.
***
* Ragnar - Mesa AZ - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx
You can say it on your DX column that I heard R. Progreso on a 1956
Zenith Royal 94 11/14 at 0418 with a program talking about working in
Cuba if you want. The signal is quite overmodulated on this one program.
I don't care if you add this one or not. You got them first.
***
Bill Harms - wharms@xxxxxxxxx
They have been strong here on the East Coast for some time to the point
that decent reception of WLS is nearly impossible.
***
Charles A. Taylor - CALLTaylor@xxxxxxx
The 890 Cuban could be the 300-kW transmitter that Cuba acquired a few
years back to harass the US, although I don't think it's 300 kW. Maybe
50 kW. The 300 kWer was probably on 1180 for a while to jam Radio Martm-
1180 Marathon. It's now off 1180, and is probably inactive until Cuba
sees the opportunity to harass the US.
BTW, 1180 is no longer VOA. It's Radio Martm, which is a sister service
to VOA, Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, and Radio Liberty, under the
Bureau of International Broadcasting...another bureaucracy.

Subject:
Changes on 960 kHz. & news on CBV 980 kHz.
First, effective this morning at 10 AM EST, there was a change in format
to radio station WEAV- Plattsburgh, NY 960 kHz. All weekend they played
a loop tape of construction sounds with announcer stating that the
station was under construction and that a brand new station for the
Champlain Valley would be debuting on Monday morning at 10 AM. Here is
what took place. The station is continuing under the same call sign, but
they are simulcasting WXPS-FM 96.7 MHz. which they ID as Kicks 96.7
Country, featuring 20 songs in a row. The city of license on the FM
station is Vergennes, Vermont, but the IDs are for WXPS
Willsboro-Burlington, and WEAV-AM 960 Plattsburgh, NY. The two stations
will be carrying Imus in the Morning, weekdays 6-10 AM and country the
rest of the time. Many IDs at the 10 AM start time today, but 960 AM
will probably become a "non-IDer" with the Kicks Country 96.7 slogans
being used from the FM side.
Second: Gilles Michaud, (CIDX/NRC member) reports a personal logging of
radio station CBV on 980 kHz. in Quebec City. THIS STATIONIS NOT SILENT
as has been reported in so many different places in the last few months.
Please adjust references accordingly.
A few other brief notes: Montreal is still waiting more information on
the new French language country music station scheduled to begin
operations tentatively in the New Year. Reported frequency is to be 1320
kHz, but that may change as per owners, and call letters might very well
be CJMS, formerly used on 1280 kHz.
Also, still no firm information on closing dates for CBM 940 kHz, and
CBF 690 kHz. in Montreal. This looks like it might continue to drag out
for quite some time yet.
If you have any questions on any of this, please feel free to contact
me.

I am also hearing a New X Bander on 1650 testing tonight with MOR/New
Age Instrumental Music from 2130-2205 EST. Signal is VG+ although it is
mixing a bit with KCNZ Cedar Falls, Iowa. This station testing is MUCH
stronger than KCNZ....and seems to be looping to the South from my
Location in London, Ontario. Does anyone have any idea who this is
testing???

12/11. I heard them too tonight. Barry and I exchange live signal
reports on the #MWDX IRC channel.
1650 UNID 12/11 2155-2205 They played non-stop music and no ID or talk.
The strong signal strength here suggests either a station in a
neighboring state or a station further away testing with 10 kw. If they
are in AR as suggested by Barry, they will be heard from Coast to Coast
even though other 1650 stations. (Harms-MD)
***
Barry McLarnon VE3JF/VA3TCP - bm@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Here in Ottawa it appears to be to the SW, about 30 degrees more
southerly than the Cedar Rapids station. The only station on the
ex-band list that's in that direction is KHFS in Fort Smith, AR. If
it's them, I suspect that they're testing with their 10KW daytime power.

I will guess Portsmouth, VA. I am in Boston and hear it quite well.

Is anyone else hearing the Inst. music on 1650 khz tonight? rather poor
hee in the NW. No anmts just back to back music, mixing with KKTR and
KDNZ. Logged here at 0630 EST 12/13. I wondwer if this is the Arkansas
station others have hrd.

1630 KKWY WYOMING, FOX FARM-CHEYENNE. While tuning around at 1345 UTC
12/12, I heard KKWY all alone on 1630, apparently with a new
format. They are no longer // with KJJL. They are C&W and IDed as
"Thanks for listening to KKWY-Fox Farm-Cheyenne." Into more C&W
mx. The signal was abit better than I have heard them in the
past. They were running about an S3. I might also mention that
they use the slogan "The Spirit of Wyoming" (PM-OR)

At 0230 EST I am hearing a station under CBK and no sign of the usual
Mexico. It is very soft classical music. I wonder is CBT still on 540. I
cant imagine what else would be on 540 at this time of night. I do not
usually listen to 540 so I am not very familiar with what is there.

I hear classical music from XEBACH [x-bach] Tijuana. All EE announcers
and all classical mx. On 540 you can easily null XEWA from Monterrey to
hear XEBACH here in AZ. I am pretty sure they are in stereo too.

580 UNID 1120 11/17 one of three stations on 580. Could not get ID
before fade. Playing Michael Medved Show. Who has Medved on 580?
700 WLW OH, Cincinnati 1136 11/17 with a local talk program. Many
people angry at Clinton. Many people angry with Larry Flynt over
"outing" Livingstons affair. Talk of Flynt coming to Cincinnati.
700 KWLW UT, Salt Lake City 1149 11/17 playing old country music with
Loretta Lynn singing "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man" and
Charley Pride singing "Pure Love". Blew away WLW. Usually this

Gave KWLW ID instead of FMer ID.

followed by a tag of "Jammin' 12-10". New. Runs U1-370 watts. I
am really pleased with this as they have been tough to log. Very
AU CX tonight. Californians all over the dial. Dinally some of
the AU CX are doing me good.
1450 KQDI MT. GREAT FALLS- caught ID at 1859.50 EST 12/13, because of
glitch is UNID 1 on 1 Sports station that was booming in. At ID

Further info on the "magnetar" for AMNF...(as mentioned by Rich Phelps)
This was from hard core dx (Alan Gale and Bob Foxworth). Note the
hour's difference in time mentioned from Rich's submission.
Rich
>On that day the planetary A index was 112, and it was assumed at the
>time that this was caused by a proton flare from our sun about 4
>days earlier. Now some scientists are wondering if perhaps the
>resulting disturbance on earth may have been enhanced by a wave of
>energy from a Magnetar, or super-magnetized star about 15,000 light
>years from earth. Paul Harden, NA5N of the National Radio Astronomy
>Observatory in New Mexico wants to hear from hams who may have been
>listening to medium wave or HF radio around 3:22 AM Pacific Daylight
>Time (1022 UTC) in the Western United States on August 27. He can
>be reached at pharden@xxxxxxxxx
>
>Paul says that this is the first known event from outside our solar
>system that has affected the earth's environment. He also invites
>us to look at his institution's web page on this event at
>www.nrao.edu/pr/magnetar.html. He noted that if only the SOHO
>satellite had been working, meaningful measurements could have been
>made which could easily separate the effects of the solar flare and
>the magnetar gamma ray burst.
and my own comments:
A solar induced geomagnetic storm started with a sudden impulse to the
earth's magnetic field at 0651UTC on 26 August with continuing major to
severely stormy conditions through the 27th. If the magnetar caused
auroral activity, I wonder how could be differentiated from that already
caused by the solar activity? The Solar Terrestrial Dispatch at the
University of Lethbridge (http://solar.uleth.ca/solar/) has files
available via FTP on the auroral activity during this period. Almost
all observations were prior to 27 Aug 1022UTC)
Dr. Umran Inan at Stanford stated
(http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/headlines/ast29sep98_2.htm) that
earth's ionosphere on the earth's night side was briefly at a daytime
state due to the magnetar's emissions, and that would have caused long
range (such as shortwave) radio signals to fade out during that time.
In Canada and the northern U.S. however, one wouldn't have noticed
particularly as the auroral activity had already suppressed radio
signals to a high degree. Certainly my signal strength recordings of
Asiatic and Australian MW signals showed nothing at all on the 27th,
before or after 1022UTC. Bad timing on the sun's part.

I bought the December issue of Popular Science today at noon and in the
back is an ad from the C Crane company for a radio that is supposed to
be a super AM Broadcast band radio. I called them and they claim that
they worked with SANGEAN to have it built and that they were involved in
the design. They also told me that it will be reviewed in the January
issue of Popular Science.
I asked the person at C Crane if they knew how it compared to the GE
Super Radio I or II. They knew what I was talking about, and told me
that it was, and I quote, "about 30% better". I am not sure I know what
that means. The price in the ad was $159.95.
Questions:
Does anyone have one of these? Apparently they have been selling them
for about a month. If so, how well does is work?

Here in the NW (Oregon), CX were so AU last night, hearing Wyoming
wasn't easy most of the night. Apparently I was getting bits and pieces
of an X-Bander testing on 1650 with Inst. mx, that several feel was
Portswouth, VA. There were 4 DX Tests last night. Not one of them made
it here. Last year when WEGP-1390-ME testing, it was mixing with SC on
the channel all alone. CX were excellent that night. This year, it has
been solar storms, sunspots, AU cx. In the 36 years I have been DXing,
it may be the worst year I have ever had for CX. No long haul DX on the
uppper regional frequencies at all this year. The best I have done this
year on any of the crowded regionals has been St. Louis on 1600 khz.
That has only been once or twice.

Max Power for TIS stations.
This is a reply to a question about power of TIS stations in the
AMFMTVDX mailing list. My apologies to the poster of the question, my
mailer ate a bunch of mail including his message. I will be glad to
give full credit if he will tell me who he is.
The FCC regs call for a 10 W maximum. However, in cases where it can be
demonstrated that one higher powered transmitter broadcast to a coverage
area better than several 10 W transmitters, the FCC will waive the 10 W
maximum. That has happened at Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport
WPLR660 on 1640 and 1680 (60 watts each) and at Miami International
Airport on 530 WNQM383 (90 watts).
