Vanuatu broadcaster to cut services
Wednesday 5 August, 1998 (2:06pm AEST)
The Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation will
significantly cut its services as part of a cost-cutting exercise.
The corporation will close its FM radio station, which broadcasts
in the capital Port Vila.
The national network, Radio Vanuatu, will cut its broadcast hours
from 16 to 10.5 hours each day.
The station will no longer broadcast in the afternoons and will
close one hour earlier, at nine o'clock each night.
The corporation's bi-weekly paper will now be published once a
week.
Corporation manager Jonas Cullwick says the cuts are a
consequence of smaller Government subsidies this financial year.
Concerns have been raised that the cuts will mean people living
on remote islands will no longer receive radio programs and that
transmission of emergency messages during cyclones could be
adversely affected.
