SAD NEWS
-------------------
I have the sad duty to report that a legend in our radio hobby passed
away last week. Henry Scofield Holbrook or "Hank" as he was known to his
friends, died of leukemia on April 15 at the age of 69 in the Washington
Hospital Center. He lived in Tracy's Landing, MD. Hank was an avid DXers
(all band) and chased after wallpaper like no other in our hobby. He
DXed it all and collected QSLs from everything he heard. Draw bridges,
ships, broadcasters, TISs, toll booths, et al. If Hank could hear it he
would QSL it. I grew up in this hobby watching Hank do his thing. He
supported clubs, commercial magazines and other organizations with his
information and insight. As a MT columnist I use to look forward to
Hank's monthly contributions. It always gave me a new idea or two and
some new DX targets to go after. Hank was more than a contributor for
me. He educated and directed me in my hobby pursuits. But more than
that, Hank was a good firend to me and this hobby. Hank old friend,
Gayle and I will miss you. I' m sure that Mary Ellen will miss keeping
your logbook on trips. But you are in a far better place where the DX is
always in and your QSLs never get lost in the mail. Please take a second
or two today to remember a great DX'er. To Mary Ellen his wife, and
Melanie and Martha his daughters, we send along our deepest sympathy
from the entire MT/ST/Grove family. Also Gayle and I send along our
personal regards. We both had a close working relationship with Hank
that had developed over many years of personal and regular
correspondence. If I get any more details, I will certainly pass it
along. I want to thank MT reader Dave Eason for passing along the heads
up to Gayle and faxing Hank's Washington Post obit to the office. (Larry
Van Horn, Monitoring Times Assistant Editor, USA, via Eric Bueneman)

ERIC BUENEMAN - Confirming information on Glenn Hauser's report...KMOX
(1120 kHz-St. Louis, MO) DOES play the National Anthem at 5:23 a.m. on a
daily basis, and The Lord's Prayer (the Catholic "Our Father") before
the 6:00 a.m. news. In addition, on weekdays, the station plays a
military march before the 7:00 a.m. news. The music is enhanced by the
station's AM Stereo capability, which it added in 1988. 73, Eric (N0UIH)
HAROLD SELLERS - From April 17 to 19 I was on a DXpedition to a remote
cottage near the north-eastern Ontario hamlet of Coe Hill. Coe Hill is
about 3 hours NE of Toronto in the Kawartha Lakes region. Five DXers
(Ken Alexander, Neil Wolfish, Dan Greenall, myself - all from Ontario-
and Harold Frodge from Michigan) enjoyed 1 to 3 days listening from a
cottage that has all the comforts of home (refridgerator, stove,
dishwasher!, television, VCR, three bedrooms and a hot tub!). For an
antenna we thought we had a 1000 foot longwire fed to all of us through
a multicoupler. However when the antenna was being rolled in at the end
of the weekend it was discovered there was a break in the wire, so we
only had a 40 ft. antenna!!! My receiver was the JRC NRD-515. This is a
very quiet site, but propagation conditions were mostly flat with the
exception of Sunday morning when the higher frequencies did quite well
into Asia and the Pacific. Probably this was due to our antenna! But we
still had a lot of fun. Harold Sellers

13, tuned in just in time to hear Apintie drums immediately ahead of
relatively short anthem played by brass band. Weak fair thru the strong
carrier of R. Ancash which continued on but Ancash is rendering
extremely low audio presently and could only be heard with very marginal
audio after Apintie's closing. Normal sked is to 0400* except on local
Sunday evenings when 1 hr earlier; this is listed correctly in PWBR but
not properly reflected in any of WRTH, TBL or TBL. * Also 0400-0404*
April 14, instrumental music across 0400 to closing anmt by woman at
0401, then same anthem rendition as hrd prior day but quite weak. Bits
of R. Ancash audio again noted only after Apintie close. Now is a good
time to log Apintie, in NAm and probably Europe, in spite of its LP
antenna now beamed south (per Hans Johnson in Cumbre DX via DX-Window),
as long as Ancash modulation remains so low. ---CLARK, Thornhill,
