[HCDX]: Glenn Hauser's SW/DX March 31

        GLENN HAUSER'S SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 98-16, March 31, 1998

BELGIUM. RVI's new 15545 at 1230-1300 daily to NAm was good March
30 tho inaudible here March 29; the only other likely time we
could hear it is 1730 via Germany on 11810, but that's in REE-
Costa Rica sideband. Maybe OK in ENAm? Joe Hanlon in PA says it's
fair-to-poor at 1700 with DW co-channel; //17655 from Wavre to Af
was better but unchecked at 1730; also at 1800 in Dutch March 29
he heard them on 15720, punch-up error for intended 15270 (Glenn
Hauser, OK)

BULGARIA. R. Bulgaria's new 9485 to NAm in English at 2300 and
0200 ought to be good, but whenever I check it's badly bothered
by a recalcitrant ute on this increasingly broadcast-only band.
Must use the //11720 instead (Glenn Hauser, OK, March 31)

FINLAND. YLE Z-98 new evening English to NAm confirmed on 11900
at 0200-0230 March 31, good on this date, tho inaudible on March
29, 30 with depressed MUF. //9780 clashed with RCI March 29 on
its last day of usage, and also every day with HCJB Russian
service, probably 500 kW with IS starting before 0200 and
dominating frequency! Also, YLE's now Sunday-only 1230 to NAm
in English heard March 29 on 11900, 15400. The latter is
subject to the varying spur from Brasil-15445 (Glenn Hauser, OK)

GREECE [and non]. VOG relays via VOA USA as in previous Z-98
schedule must have been very tentative, as not heard where
listed! The 1200-1350 via Delano on 9595, 9730, 9775 is not
to be heard, nor on previous 9690; Ron Trotto and Joe Hanlon
found the 1800 on new 17765. That's ex-15485, and still on //
17705. When I checked March 30 at 1825 Spanish news was on
still at winter timing; at 1859 check, 17765 was ahead of
17705 so they must be Greenville, Delano, respectively. News
in English should be at 1800, but in W season, one of them
would not come on until 1815, still the case? No sign of
11730 as listed. At 0000, no sign of 11605 listed, nor at 0200
of 6125, but still heard on direct frequencies 7450, 9420,
9935, 11645, none very good (Glenn Hauser, OK)

JAPAN [and non]. One R. Japan sked showed them back on 9505 for
NAm in our mornings, but not heard yet, and still on 9535 at 1500
English. No sign of new 11705 listed via Canada at 0000. Perhaps
their changes come April 1 with fiscal year, or April 5 with NAm
DST. New 9665 via Ascension to Africa at 0000--in the middle of
their night--is expectedly strong here as many BBC/Asc/to Af
frequencies are, but with one small problem: Voice of Russia in
Spanish co-channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, March 31)

KOREA SOUTH. The clash I predicted with NSB Tokyo on 6055 has
come to pass, with RKI's 1230 English, noted March 31. NSB is on
top here. If RKI were on a decent frequency at this time, it
would be a good alternative in C&WNAm to the often difficult-to-
hear 1030 relay via Canada (Glenn Hauser, OK)

LITHUANIA [non]. R. Vilnius via Germany as expected on new 9855
for Z98, English at 0030. One evening, transmitter did not come
on until about 0050; and this suffers from RN-Bonaire 9845
splash (Glenn Hauser, OK, March 31)

MEXICO. XERTA is still active on 4800.7 whenever checked at night,
with usual mostly-musical format, and heavy het with TGBN whenever
it is on, such as at 1132 March 31. Best to listen after 0330
unless you have too much Lesotho (Glenn Hauser, OK)

NEW ZEALAND. Replying to a listener's question, Myra Oh on RNZI
Mailbox March 30 said there was still no decision about the fate
of RNZI (Glenn Hauser, OK)

PORTUGAL. A reminder that today, Tuesday March 31 brings the
final English broadcast from R. Portugal. Inaudible here at 1330
on 21515; try 2000 on 9780, 9815, 13625 (or 7110?), and UT Wed
0330 on 9570, 6150. Perhaps Winnie Almedia will do something
special as farewell (Glenn Hauser, OK)

SWITZERLAND [and non]. Remember when the Swiss Shortwave Service
had a morning broadcast to NAm at 1315? Now quite by chance a
couple of transmissions to elsewhere give us good reception. The
new Singapore relay at 1100-1200 on 9810 is beamed 25 degrees,
which also favors NAm, just as some BBC broadcasts do. In fact,
this azimuth crosses NAm: Nome-Whitehorse-Calgary-Rapid City--
right on Enid!--Lake Charles. No wonder I hear it well. And the
hour at 1400 on 15265 comes in surprisingly well, March 30, as
it is direct from Sottens, Switzerland, 500 kW at 80 degrees. At
this time the only // is 9575 from Singapore, but beamed due
north and poor here March 30, but March 31 the two were about
equal. 9575 lags almost 2 seconds behind 15265, indicating a many-
hop satellite feed. BTW, nothing heard about Schwarzenburg on
the 30 or 60-min programs March 30 (Glenn Hauser, OK)

THAILAND. R. Thailand, English at 1230-1300 reconfirmed still on
9885 Udorn, March 30; their most reliable airing here, tho with
nearly polar path often subject to disturbances; fluttery March
31 (Glenn Hauser, OK)

TURKEY. Still haven't seen VOT's Z-98 sked, but on March 29, Joe
Hanlon in PA found some new English times and frequencies: 1830
on 11765, also here March 30 and seems more USB than LSB. Hanlon
says poor audio and //9445; 0300 on 9655 is fairly good, and
probably also used at 2200 but not yet checked. Per EDXP, the
1230 to As is on 13800, unconfirmed yet (Glenn Hauser, OK) ###
