CANADA - Marc Montgomery has asked me to do a 5-6 minute piece with him
once every two weeks on RCI Mailbag, starting Feb 1. These will not be
DX/SWL news but informative reports on some aspect of radio and
communications, predominantly Canadian based, such as DX clubs, impact
of Howard Stern, radio regulations, and answering mailbag questions
about radio (Sheldon Harvey, Quebec, WORLD OF RADIO 927 / GH SW/DX
Report 98-05, Feb 5, 1998)
CHILE - In 1997 Chile released a 110 USD stamp commemorating the 75 th
anniversary of the very first transmission in the country (written on
the stamp: 75 Anos de la Primera Transmision Radial en Chile). At this
time I have very little information about this particular experiment.
However, the design of the stamp includes two buildings. I suppose the
studio and transmitter was located in one of the building. The listeners
had assembled in a second building. Thus, the first radio transmission
in Chile was carried out in 1922. It is interesting to note that Radio
Chilena celebrated its 70 th anniversary back in 1992. It is possible
that these pioneer radio transmissions also marked the beginning of
Radio Chilena which today is the oldest radio station in the country. I
have a small quantity of 1997 110 USD stamp in mint condition.
Interested readers can obtain a copy by sending me 2 (two) IRC-s.

INDONESIA - RRI Samarinda on 9614.3kHz now signs off at 0650. (Jan 31,
Juichi Yamada, JAPAN / Jembatan DX # 41)
INDONESIA - RRI Jambi retuned on its frequency from 4927 kHz to 4925
kHz at 1300-1700 at the end of January. (Juichi Yamada, JAPAN / Jembatan
DX # 41)
INDONESIA - RRI Manado on 3215.0kHz changed sign off time from 1300 to
1605 at the end of January. (Juichi Yamada, JAPAN / Jembatan DX # 41)
IRELAND - [non]. West Coast Radio Ireland got a reprieve, thanks to
financial support from the British newspaper News of the World, so NAm
broadcasts continue Feb 5 and 12; Europe Feb 7 and 14 (Finbarr
O'Driscoll, Eire, RIB and WORLD OF RADIO 927) Once again the Feb 5 0100
UT Thu broadcast on 5905 via Germany said next week's would be the "last
of the current series" but now they have higher hopes of resuming a few
weeks later, at least by summer (Glenn Hauser, OK / GH SW/DX Report

ITALY - The new President of RAI , Radio Televisione Italiana is Roberto
Zaccaria. (G.Serra, Italy, ed., 3 February 1998)
KOREA (NORTH) - Radio Pyongyang observed on 6575 with a terrible audio
fault - very "rough" response (somewhat like aurora) makes the voice
modulation practically unintelligible. Actually, as I expected the use
of 9325 and 13790 instead of 6575 for the German service was a shoot in
the own foot. Alongside with 13790 currently also 9325 doesn't propagate
into Europe. (Kai Ludwig, ½ /EDXP # 78).
KOREA (NORTH) - Pyongyang Broadcasting Station on 6250 and 6400
continues to drift back and forth between 6248-6250 and 6398-6400
respectively. This was first observed on or about 22/1, and for the past
two weeks both frequencies have moved slightly up and down every few
days. These and many other North Korean frequencies (PBS, KCBS, RP)
continue to be off the air due to the presumed power shortage. (Sonny
Ashimori, 4/2 / EDXP # 78).
KOREA (NORTH) - Radio Pyongyang with poor audio and drifting transmitter
on 17734.4 // with 15180 Sp 0430, into Fr at 0500, much better when VOA
Ch vacates 17740 at 0500. (Craig Tyson 26/1 / EDXP # 78).
LIBERIA - "We are glad to inform you that STAR Radio's prgms resumed
this morning at 0500 am. For more information, please see the press
release sent separately. We take this opportunity to thank all the
subscribers who supported STAR Radio during the stand-by period." (6/2
Star Radio Daily News E-mail). Sked given at the end of the message is
the same as was given before the closedown: FM 104 MHz., SW at
0500-0800 on 3400, 1700-2100 on 5880. (Jerry Berg, 6/2 / EDXP # 78).
LIBERIA - From the press release: "The independent radio stn STAR Radio,
b/cing from Monrovia (Liberia), has resumed b/cing on January 6 [must
mean Feb 6--JB], after one month of suspension ordered by the Liberian
Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications due to an alleged illegal
allocation of broadcast fqys. STAR Radio's request for resuming its
activities has been supported by various Liberian Ministries, and an
authorization of broadcast has been issued by the Minister of Posts and
Telecommunications. Since the suspension of the radio's prgms in
January, STAR Radio has received many messages of appreciation and
support from its listeners and from the people who were reading STAR
Radio's nx on the Internet. Intl press freedom agencies also expressed
their support. STAR Radio was created in July 1997 by the Fondation
Hirondelle in order to provide an independent source of information to
all Liberians, and to assist the country ravaged by seven years of civil
war in the process of reconciliation and reconstruction. STAR Radio's
main nx bullletins are aired in 14 vernacular languages, as well as in
En, Liberian En and Fr. The project is funded by the U.S. Agency for
International Development(USAID) through the Intl Foundation for
Election Systems (IFES). STAR Radio's nx and prgms are compiled, edited
and b/c by nearly 100 Liberian journalists, technicians and
administrative staff. Fondation Hirondelle was created in 1995 by Swiss
journalists in order to provide independent and impartial information to
populations deprived of such by a conflict or a natural disaster." (NU

PIRATE EUROPE - From Radio San Marino Int. : due to excessive reaction
of the San Marino Government and Postal Authority, RSMI is forced to
stop its broadcasts until further notice. We hope to return on air as
soon as possible. We are working also for a new internet web site and e
mail address. Thanks for your interest. (RSMI / Play DX # 967 Feb. 02
1998)
SAN MARINO - The Administration of the POSTE E TELECOMUNICAZIONI of the
Repubblica di San Marino (Postmaster General), officially declares
that: Radio San Marino International has not ever obtained any
authorization for the transmissions by the Sammarinese authorities, and
therefore it is to be considered a pirate station. RSMI has not ever
operated in the territory of the Repubblica di San Marino, and in no
circumstance could make it because the station is not provided of any
authorization. All the serious placed in action violations, of national
and international laws, will be denounced at the opportune places. The
signals issued in date 20 - 21 December 1997 was radiated from sites
located in some Countries in the Center of Europe, probably from
Germany. Some investigations are in course of action to locate the
accountables. We invite all the Shorthwave Listeners to do not send any
money to the post office boxes indicated by the self-styled RSMI
accountables. For any official information about the activity of San
Marino Republic broadcasting, contact the DIREZIONE GENERALE POSTE E
TELECOMUNICAZIONI, Contrada Omerelli 17, 47031, San Marino Republic.

TURKEY - VOT's English service announces these changes from Feb 7: 1930

UNITED KINGDOM - On Sept 25 1997, British Royal Mail released a
commemorative prestige booklet to mark the 75 th anniversary of BBC. The
Company was established on November 14 1922. Today the BBC is one of
the major media companies of the world, serving both the home market and
an international audience. The Royal Mail BBC Prestige Book of Stamps
has four panes of stamps along with several pages telling the BBC story,
using text and pictures. Three of the stamps panes have ordinary Queen
Elizabeth Machin def. stamps, while the third pane has four 20 pence
Muffin the Mule stamps which were originally issued in 1996. Muffin the
Mule is a well-known figure from a BBC television show for children.
Some of the stamp varieties only in the special BBC booklet, which of
course helps increase sales to specialist collectors. These prestige
booklets have rather high face values, usually around 7 (seven) UK
Pounds. I have none available for sale at this time. (C. Brunstrom,
Sweden / Play DX # 967 Feb. 02 1998)
URUGUAY - 6035 CXA30 R. Nacional is currently inactive, but when I
visited the station studios today to participate in a weekly programme
devoted to historical aspects of Radio conducted by OM Antonio
Tormo, CX8CC, I rcvd info from programming staff confirming the
resumption of shortwave broadcasts from them in March 1998. They will
use their current MW xter (of Czech origin) and will be transformed to
shortwave operation. Listed MW power is 20 Kw. From what he said to me,
I presume that it will be kept for SW. Also a WWW site will be
inaugurated with streaming audio. No more precise info available since
source (Mr. Efrain Chury Iribarne, journalist) was not of technical
origin. They have bought 2 new MW xters to replace the current which is
intended to be converted to SW. People at studios enjoyed the audio
clips from stations like R. Patria Libre and Edison's and DeForest's
voices.(Nigro, Uruguay Feb.2)
USA - WEWN/EWTN--MORE CATHOLIC THAN THE POPE? According to an article in
the January 30, 1998 National Catholic Reporter, Los Angeles cardinal
Roger Mahony has filed an official complaint to the Vatican about Mother
Angelica, the owner-and- operator of WEWN "Catholic Radio" and EWTN
cable TV network. Mahony has accused Angelica of violations of Canon
Laws #753 and 1373, which require respect for church heirarchy, and
forbid inciting ecclesiastical disobedience, respectively. The article
indicates that the Cardinal's actions were caused by statements made by
Angelica on her November 12, 1997 live broadcast, when she accused
Mahony of being a heretic, and called on her audience to practice "zero
obedience" to the Cardinal's wishes. According to the article, Mahony is
seeking an "interdict" on WEWN/EWTN, a sanction widely used in the
Middle Ages, effectively suspending church membership rights. The
article describes how Angelica, at a 1996 "Call to Holiness" conference
in Detroit, declared that she would never turn WEWN/ EWTN over to the
Catholic bishops, and would "...blow the damn thing up before you [the
bishops] get it." The nun, who has taken lifetime vows of poverty,
chastity and obedience, owns WEWN/EWTN in her own name. She often
criticizes church officials and institutions by name on the air,
accusing them of being too liberal or unorthodox. On camera, she has
claimed private revelations from God, predicting worldwide disaster in
the next few years--in contrast to the Pope, who has declared 2000 AD to
be a jubilee year of celebration in the Church. (Owen Williamson, REVIEW
OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING / GH SW/DX Report 98-05, Feb 5, 1998)
USA - [non]. Several weeks ago, BBCM issued a WYFR schedule which
mentioned Taiwan relays but not UKOGBANI, as had been the case for a
single hour in Arabic at 1800, originally an exchange for BBC via WYFR
which still exists at 1300-1600 on 9590. I suspected the listed Arabic
at 1800 on 9580 was really via UK, so asked Dave Kenny to confirm. He
checked with Merlin, and they say they are still relaying WYFR but the
frequency has changed to 11665 (Glenn Hauser, WORLD OF RADIO 927/ GH
SW/DX Report 98-05, Feb 5, 1998)
YUGOSLAVIA - Radio Yugoslavia has signed an agreement with China Radio
International for relays of its broadcasts to the Far East, Australia
and the Pacific coast of North America, according to reports from Tanjug
news agency, cited by Kim Elliot on VOA's 'Communications World' on 7/2.
Also in the works - relays of Radio Yugoslavia via a 'private shortwave
station' in the US.(Matt Francis, 8/2 / EDXP # 78)
