[HCDX]: N Korean power shortage worsening
NORTH KOREA
The presumed severe power shortage in N Korea shut down all broadcasts from
Radio Pyongyang, Pyongyang Broadcasting Station, and Korean Central
Broadcasting Station, between 0620-0715 on Feb. 5. All of the scheduled
shortwave transmissions from Pyongyang were missing, while the transmitters
in Kanggye (3960 KCBS, 6100 KCBS, 6400 PBS, 11680 KCBS) were up with silent
carriers. Some transmitters came back on after 0715, but many continued to
be off the air until later in the day.
It is interesting to note that even during the complete blackout, jammers
against the "Voice of the People" (clandestine from S Korea) were kept up
on 6518 and 6600. They were also on during VOA's Korean transmission
1300-1400, and all of S Korea's Korean broadcasts as usual. However,
finally at 1530-1630 today the jammers against Radio Free Asia were
unnoticeable on 5855, 7475, and 9955.
