*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Lynn Hollerman - gmholler@xxxxxxxxxx

PLEASE NOTE: Even if you don't hear a test, be sure and drop a card, letter,
or e-mail to the station personnel, thanking them for going to the trouble
to run a test!

Saturday, December 13, 1997 - KTFI-1270, Twin Falls, ID will conduct a DX
test at 5,000 watts nondirectional between 2:00 & 3:00 AM EST. The test
will include light rock/MOR music, voice announcements, test tones, and
morse code IDs. Reception reports may be sent to:

Mr. Bob Jackson
Announcer
KTFI-AM
606 Blue Lakes Road North
Twin Falls, ID 83301
E-Mail:bobj@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
WWW: http://www.impactradio.com/am1270/

(Note: KTFI requests an SASE be included with QSL requests. Add 2 IRCs for
overseas DXers)
(Arranged by J.D. Stephens.)

Also, if you hear a test, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know, via e-mail or the
newsgroup! And, if you send a reception report to a station, please remember
to include return postage with your report...

One final note...both IRCA and NRC are without CPC chairmen...without
someone to arrange the DX tests, there won't be many tests, only the few
that some members have been able to arrange! CPC chairman isn't a terribly
difficult or time consuming position; if you can volunteer, please, please,
PLEASE do!! (you can e-mail me for more info!)

December 7, 1997, 0050z S9 open carrier on 1630 kHz. This may be one of the
new X-band stations testing. Loop direction from here is WNW which would
seem to indicate that if it is indeed one of the new X-band stations it is
likely Iowa City, IA or Fox Farm, WY. Just listened across the hour at
0100z and no ID.

WSKO "The Score" (all sports) in Providence, RI is one of the off-channel
stations noted lately. It's 200 Hz low of its nominal 790 kHz (i.e. it's on
789.8). Interestingly, Barbados and an Argentinean have recently been noted
similarly low from nominal 790. Apparently Barbados and WSKO are both
presently operating in the vicinity of 789.8.

WSKO was previously known as WLKW, WEAN, and a couple of other calls that
escape me at the moment.

their tower was destroyed in a windstorm.

KHLO is now operating with 5KW non directional and is sharing space with
KAHU AM 1060 in Hilo according to a phone converstaion today with Jeremy
Storm, CE for both facilities. The KAHU tower was modified (extension) to
accomodate the KHLO requirements. DX reports are welcome:

1100 MEXICO, XENAS Navojoa, Sonora DEC 6 1130-1300 - Fair u/KFAX with a
variety of music, slogan "La musica mas bonita" (this was by far the
primary slogan used, but there also seemed to be other slogans that
rhymed with this one for whatever type of song they were playing: "La
Rancherita", "La Nortenita", etc.). ID at 1230 "XENAS, con la musica
mas bonita, en 1100 de su radio. La musica mas bonita es... Radio
Rama... en Navojoa." New frequency, ex-1400, never logged them on
old frequency. We should also strike the listing for a station on
1110 in Navojoa, as there couldn't be one with stations on 1100 and
       1130 in that market. [Hall-CA]
1470 MEXICO, (XERCN) Tijuana DEC 6 1248 Noted off tonight instead of usual
OC. Possibly due to storms. Usual pests on 1460, 1470, and 1480.
       [Hall-CA]

Conditions good this week. Panguitch, UT "Bryce Canyon Country" TIS is
fighting through my two local pests on 1610, along with another UNID which
might be Yosemite. Anybody else notice how weak KTNN has been recently?
They may have even been off once or twice.

AOR AR7030 Plus, Drake R8A, Sherwood SE-3, MFJ-1026 Phasing Unit, MWT-3S
Regen Preselector, DSP-599zx, 4 150' slopers, 2' air core loop

Dec 7 2115z - definitely a mixed bag and none of it very exciting. Some
fairly strong Spanish signals, middle/top of the band best, only thing in on
low end was Madrid-585, probable Kaliningrad-1386 with rather somber
sounding talk, Saudi-1521 strong, carrier on 1548 probably Kuwait. Het
827/828 but neither good enough to produce any audio. By 2200z things had
pretty well gone down the tubes. DEC 9 2145z and the band almost reminds me
of the fantastic conditions noted 2 years ago. Likely Austria on 1476 if
this is still on - sure sounded like German to me. Monster sigs from
1098/1314/1386 with Kaliningrad carrying EE religion. Entire band open with
signals from top to bottom. DEC 10 2135 and the good cx continue.
Norway-1314 and Kaliningrad-1386 not nearly as strong as last night but
Belgium-1512 like a local at 2137 in EE and Kuwait-1548 almost as loud.
Unid again on 828 a tough frequency to get a handle on. Just a very weak
het from the Syrian on 827 until about 2220 when they came up. 783 Syria
good again. We have possible T-storms in forecast and some pretty loud
static crashes noted so storms around somewhere. Holland 747 very loud and
675 poor - just the opposite of last night. Someone on 1476 again but not
as good as last night - Austria? DEC 11 0100 cx still excellent. 0103
someone way over Spain briefly on 558 sounded Italian so likely Switzerland
- 765 was booming. 0150 lots of strong signals still in but nothing new.
Time for the NRC Ham Net. Happy Holidays - see you in 3 weeks!

153 ALGERIA/GERMANY DEC 10 0135 - Bechar with woman in AA and short
periods of music on top with Donebach behind with a man in GG and at
0137 both being done in by GWEN. [Merriman-VA]
177 GERMANY Oranienburg DEC 10 0141 - good with what sounded like show
       music, male vocalist. [Merriman-VA]
 180 TURKEY Polatli DEC 10 0125+ - woman/man in presumed Turkish, some
music, in/out of noise. Has to be this - nothing else on the
       frequency. [Merriman-VA]
189 ICELAND DEC 10 0130+ - two men in presumed Icelandic, interview or
discussion, about S5 and rock steady. This was in even better last
       night. [Merriman-VA]
207 GERMANY DLF Aholming DEC 11 0115 - classical music, way over normally
       dominant Morocco and //756. [Merriman-VA]
567 IRELAND Tullamore DEC 10 2311 - man in EE giving sports news 2312
brief music, spot with C/W music in background, loud. [Merriman-VA]
612 IRELAND Athlone DEC 11 0055 - several men in EE having discussion,
lots of laughing, Morocco behind. [Merriman-VA]
756 GERMANY DLF (2 locations) DEC 11 0115 - classical music, no sign of
       Spain and //207. [Merriman-VA]
764 SWITZERLAND Sottens DEC 11 0138 - very loud with classical music.
       [Merriman-VA]
 774 EGYPT (?) Abis DEC 11 0059:50 - pips, last higher, 5 seconds fast,
brief music followed by woman in AA with what sounded like news.
Loud. Pips from Spain behind and Spain on top by 0103. [Merriman-VA]
783 SYRIA Tartus DEC 9 2350+ - man/woman in AA, not real strong but in the
clear and //827. DEC 10 2315 - AA music, man/woman in AA with what
sounded like a story of some kind, better than last night but nothing
on 827 except a het. 2357 man speaking EE, being translated into AA
talking about the trade fair in Syria that he was attending, signal
       up to S9. [Merriman-VA]
827 SYRIA Deir-Ez-Zoor DEC 9 2350+ - man/woman in AA, not quite as good as
783 and more QSB. DEC 10 0000 - suddenly surged out of the noise
with AA music and now better than 783. No sign of anyone else here -
wonder if Morocco has moved back to 828? [Merriman-VA]
828 UNID DEC 10 2153 - what sounded like light rock music, 2155 man in ??
as started to fade, up briefly again with music at 2157 and 2215.
Syria-827 just a very weak het at this time. A very difficult
frequency to get a handle on. At times a good carrier here but audio
       generally poor. [Merriman-VA]
1332 ITALY Radiouno, Rome + DEC 10 2213 - woman with quick ID followed by
man in II good. DEC 9 & 10 2345+ - likely this with 1000 Hz tone,
       very loud. [Merriman-VA]
1395 HOLLAND Lopik DEC 10 0016+ - two men with teletalk, fair. Holland
675/747 both good this evening. [Merriman-VA]
1512 BELGIUM Wolvertem DEC 10 2137 - music, into news/comments by a woman
in EE, item about Islamic Summit in Tehran, very loud. [Merriman-VA]
1548 KUWAIT VOA DEC 10 2135 - interview program, VOA ID a woman,
instrumental music, very good and //9595 ,9760. 2308 still good with
man in EE with news. [Merriman-VA]

1620 ARGENTINA, Buenos Aires heard again 12/11/97 from 0357-0420 GMT with
stronger signal than 12/2. Format consisted of fast-paced
non-religious music and religious telephone talk program in Spanish.
At 0416 there was a clear time check for 0116. The announcer
mentioned the phone number 941-1723 which I called this morning. The
man I spoke with said the ID is "Radio Cardinal" (which I did not
hear), and power output is unknown. Address is Avenida San Juan 2461.

Loggings from 9/10 December 1997.

1215 UK, Assume Virgin Radio with music at 2255 UTC 9 Dec 1997. Arm Chair
copy for a couple of minutes. Almost as loud as the domestics on
1210 and 1220. (Harms- Maryland, USA)
1134 Croatia, HRT strong signal, besting New York on 1130 at times. Heard
arm chair copy of Betty Davis Eyes at 2338-2341UTC 9 Dec 1997 into
talk by male in Croatian. (Harms- Maryland, USA)
1314 Norway, no doubt who this one is with monstrous signal throughout the
evening. Heard a male announcer speak in Norwegian at 2345 UTC 9 Dec
1997. They were stronger than the domestics on 1310 and 1320 on my
car radio between 0104 and 0119 when I picked my children up from a
church activity. Also heard a few notes of music and possible SS
talk. There was a definite SAH. (Harms- Maryland, USA)
1626 European Pirate??. Monitored channel 0052 to 0122:30 UTC 10 Dec 1997.
Heard bits and pieces of talk and music. Unfortunately, due to poor
reception, I was unable to identify the language used or the songs
played, except one. 0118 to 0120:30 I heard the Song "Rock Around the
Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets. The signal cut off abruptly at
0121 and back on at 0121:15 with possibly a man speaking. The signal
disappeared at 0122:30 Listened until 0130, but did not hear any
signal. Please help me identify this guy! Did anyone in Europe or
North America hear this? This reception was made within the hour, so
my report is not a copycat report. A check of the web revealed a 1 Kw
Greek pirate on 1626. See http://www.frn.net/greek-p.html (Harms -

Mika Makelainen - Vantaa, Finland - mtm@xxxxxxxxx

Ever wondered, what DXers on top of the world hear? I recently took part in
a DXpedition to Lapland, Finland. Our extensive AM log including stations
from all continents can now be seen on the web at

www.clinet.fi/~mtm/dx/lem112.htm

The pages will be updated in the upcoming weeks as we review our tapes. The
pages are not, and are not meant to be, anything fancy, just a simple
listing for AM DXers to enjoy. For the benefit of DXers abroad, the log is
in English.
