ALGERIA / WEST SAHARA - National Radio of the Saharan Arab Democratic
Republic via ALG SW facilities observed on 11610 kHz s/on at 1800.
Observed during holiday in MRC. [Local MW 1544 kHz also observed in MRC,
formerly varying on 1355 kHz, 0600-0800, 2050-2145. Txer location in
Tindouf/Bechar-ALG area, according to direction finding in Portugal and
the Canaries, with Martens MW frame aerial loop. ed]. Addr: Directeur

Algeria. (Dieter Leupold, Germany, via DX Telegramm, 7 September in BCDX
/ EDXP # 62).
ARMENIA - Voice of Armenia: They have delayed their 50th anniversary
month celebrations from September to December for the following reason -
"We have decided to set up an amateur radio stn at the radio house in
Yerevan to give worldwide ham radio enthusiasts a chance to make two-way
contacts with our ancrs during the entire month of our celebration
[December]. Through our communiques to the DX clubs worldwide, ham radio
SWLs will also be encouraged to send in their rpts. We shall set up
three transceivers, two linear amplifiers, and the tent. callsign of
this amateur stn will be EK6R50 (EK6, Armenia; R50, radio's 50th
anniversary). However, there are not enough suitable amateur equipment
in Yerevan at the moment, and we have to send the transceivers, linears
and antennas from N.Am, despite of hostile blocades of the neighboring
two countries. This will take a couple of months, and it is the reason
of our postponement. We also want to make our celebration a memorable
event, with special QSL-cards and certificates, etc." (Armand Ozbasar
(Sanasaryan), Voice of Armenia Intl Relations, VA2EE & EK9EE, via Gerry
Dexter, WI in NU 1441 / EDXP # 62).
AUSTRALIA - RA missing from 5870, Sept 25 at 1300 but found on 5890
instead //9415, 5995. May be bad news for the Honduran, if it ever plans
to come back; not reported for quite a while (Glenn Hauser, OK / SW/DX
Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
AUSTRIA - Wolf Harranth of ORF says my previous item could be taken as
malicious. This was certainly not my intent, although I spoke strongly
out of total exasperation at their previous failure to clear up clashes,
hoping to get their attention. Further checks show Portugal on 9655 at
least between 0000 and 0300, thus blocking both 0030 and 0230 English.
Now via BC-DX I have seen ORF's W-97 schedule, indeed with 7325
replacing it to NAm at 0000-0300. This will be fine, unless BBC still
plans to use it at the same time 0230 which I do not yet know. Later:
Wolf tells me that Portugal went to 9655 planned for W97 early by
mistake and will soon leave! (Glenn Hauser, OK USA / SW/DX Report
97-14, SEPT 25)
BRUNEI - From: Wishnu Brata, Sent: Sunday, September 28, 1997 To: RTB
Brunei, Subject: SWBC. Dear Sir, Is it true that RTB will be on
shortwave in near future ? Let me know when it happens. Thanks! Best,
Wishnu Brata. --- From: The Engineering Secretariat - RTB
<rtbeng@xxxxxxxxx>
To: "'Wishnu Brata'", Subject: RE: SWBC, Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997.
Sorry, RTB has no plans to operate in the Short-Wave band in the near or
distant future. Should any planning be going on it may be at the
political level, but we have not been informed if so. Sincerely, Head
of Engineering Secretariat (via Wishnu Brata, Indonesia)
COSTA RICA - Tetsuya Hirahara and others may have a long wait for
Estereo 88.3 to start a new SW on 6075. The applicant for 88.3 got a
grant in only two weeks as a political favor, ahead of a hundred others
waiting for any FM frequency, provoking a hugeoutcry by those who were
passed over. If a profitable FM does not happen, it is unlikely the SW
would either. Another complication is that RFPI itself is already using
88.3 (James Latham, RFPI, WORLD OF RADIO 911 / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT
25)
COSTA RICA - Due to continuing jamming on 7385, which I have heard as
late as 0900, RFPI has decided to change 7585 from 2 kW SSB to 10 kW AM
at 0000-1200, meaning that 15050 will no longer be heard after 2400.
However, 7585 was missing on UT Sept 25. A new frequency is being sought
for the SSB unit (Hauser, OK USA / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
CUBA - Rising flux means the return of broadcast harmonics in the 18,
23, 24 and even 30 MHz bands; RHC heard on new 18210 = 3 x 6070, Sept 21
at 1415, better signal than on fading fundamental, announcing philatelic
contest for the 30th anniversary of the death in combat of Che Guevara
and his companeros (Hauser, OK USA / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
CZECH REPUBLIC - R. Prague may be fighting for its life; previous
reports indicate a new company is being sought to operate the external
service. Sept. 25 at 1307 on 13580, I caught the tail end of an
announcement asking listeners in solidarity with Radio Prague to write
to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Glenn Hauser, Oklahoma USA / SW/DX
Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
ETHIOPIA - ? [non]. Nightly checks of Deutsche Telekom's 5910 at 0100,
besides WCRI on Thu and R. New Nigeria on Sun, have turned up another
broadcast in an unidentified language mentioning Ethiopia, UT Sat Sept
20 only at 0100-0200; another clandestine service? Needs to be
identified (Ivan Grishin, Ont., WORLD OF RADIO 911 / SW/DX Report
97-14, SEPT 25)
GERMANY - Brother Stair, who tested via Deutsche Telekom during August,
has not been heard in September, but on his USA frequencies was heard to
say he was signing a contract with DT for 12 hours per day (Jim Moats,
OH, WORLD OF RADIO 911 / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
INDONESIA - RRI Natuna began its broadcast on 26 May 1997. The station
is the third RRI station in the Province of Riau where RRI Pekanbaru and
RRI Tanjung Pinang are operating, and situates at Ranai where is the
biggest town in the Natuna Island. While RRI Tanjung Pinang still uses
facilities of cassette tape, RRI Natuna have facilities of CD (Compact
Disc). RRI Natuna is supported by Siemens, the famous electric company
in Austria, and have a transmitter of FM stereo and tools of
broadcasting which can use out of doors. (Usually name of RRI station is
a town name, not Island name. For example, RRI Tajung Pinang situates in
Bintan Island,so Tanjung Pinang is name of town in Bintan Island.
Therefore, the information of RRI Natuna leaves us doubt a little. We
must investigate still more. Jamada, Japan) (Republika via Dirgantara,
Agustus 1997 / Jembatan DX # 29)
IRELAND - [non]. On WORLD OF RADIO 910 I gave the BBC transmitter sites
for RTE's hurling special Sun Sept 28 from 1430, but Finbarr O'Driscoll
who provided the info, says I got one of them wrong: 11660 is Rampisham,
not Skelton. The others are: 11835 Singapore, 13630 and 15170 Skelton,
15195 and 17660 Ascension, according to Wesley Boyd of RTE (Hauser,
WORLD OF RADIO 910 / 911 / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
JORDAN - Yesterday a friend of me has sent me by fax a letter received
from R Jordan after 9 years of his letter and is rewriten : Dear
listener, Since your last reception report some nine years ago a lot of
changes have taken place in our network of short-wave programs
transmitted to your area we have installed power full transmitters all
computerised and state of the art We have created a special unit to
look into your letters and reception report and respond to them . Your
letters will be aired on a twice weekly program "friends abroad"
designed to respond to your inquiries immediately on air prior to
mailing you the information you request Our English language program on
the short-wave of 11690 kHz are transmitted daily from10:00 to 1630 GMT,
We would highly appreciate receiving your reception report on this
frequency. Sincerely, Jawad Zada Radio Jordan, P.O. Box 1041 tel

MEXICO - XERTA, 4800.7, is still trying to get off the ground. As Ed
Rausch advised me, they were back testing UT Sept 24, but I could barely
pull an ID at 0145 from a signal weaker than usual against Radio Buenas
Nuevas below and a much stronger carrier on 4804.7 or so; later checks
indicated XERTA did not stay on all night this time; 4800.7 had a fine
signal the next night at 0900 check in the clear, but no modulation!
(Glenn Hauser, Oklahoma USA / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
NEW ZEALAND - RNZI couldn't get its 6100 frequency to come up, so stayed
on 9795 instead as noted Sept 22; 1129 finaally announced switch to 6100
but nothing heard; Sept 23 at 0930 check was again on 9795 late; Sept 24
at 1130 was back on 6100. Adrian Sainsbury tells me a problem in the
control system prevented them from going to 6100 for two days (Hauser,
OK USA / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
NIGERIA - [non]. Following Ivan Grishin's tip last week, I taped and
monitored carefully 5910 via Germany UT Sunday Sept 21 at 0100.
Immediately following Radio Vilnius with no transmitter break and no
detectable change in strength, Radio New Nigeria opened in English,
subtitled Voice of the Nigerian Advocacy Group for Democracy and Human
Rights. Then a 5-minute talk by a woman speaking what sounded like a
Black American rather than Nigerian accent; some music; then "brief
commentaries" introduced as in Efik at 0013, Yoruba at 0118. At 0124
wrapup in English, said cassettes and other promotional items could be
ordered from P.O. Box 202, Boston, MA 02131, or E-mail nagdhr@xxxxxxxx
Gave a different E-mail address which I could not copy correctly for
commentary on their programs; closed with "another Mo-Jo [?] production"
and off at 0129* sharp. I have asked them for more info, such as whether
they have other transmissions actually aimed at Nigeria. Later found
E-mail response from Maureen Gold. She says this started June 12, 1997!
(But apparently no one in the DX world noticed.) Sked is now To Af Sat
0600-0629 on 11995, NAm UT Sun 0100 on 5910, new freq from Sept 6,
doesn't say what the old one was; and CEu Sun 1500-1529 on 6175, no
sites specified but probably all Germany. She says their website will
open within a week, http://www.nagdhr.com, and the other E-mail address
is: radioNNig@xxxxxxx (Glenn Hauser, OK USA; WORLD OF RADIO 911 / SW/DX
Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
PIRATEEUROPE - Thesite of Wrekin Radio Int. is at:
http://www.ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/wrinternational/
(Pecolatto, Italy / Radiorama Pirate News Sept # 2)
PIRATE EUROPE - After a few setbacks European Music Radio will return to
the European SW airwaves on Sunday October 5th. The station will be on
air 24 hours on either 48 metres or 51 metres (5805). The exact
frequency will be announced next week. What you will hear is the
station's 20th birthday programming. E.M.R. started in May 1977 and was
Europe's most popular SW station till 1980 when the station was raided.
E.M.R. continued with 5th Sun trms (via sister-station FRS-Holland) till
June 1983 when station-OP Barry Stephens decided to quit. The October
pxs will be partly repeat of pxs already aired via Ozone Radio in April
of this year. However, some fresh pxs have also been recorded. The April
broadcast was not a big success due to several reasons. Barry Stephens
hopes the upcoming broadcast will be heard by more listeners. Conditions
will be better than in April giving a stronger signal. Pgms will
commence Saturday October 4th in the early evening hours lasting till
the Sunday evening October 5th. Programming will be in Dutch, French &
English hosted by Jean-Claude Georges, Barry Stephens & Peter
Verbruggen. In future a German Service will be added. In November E.M.R.
will commence trms via its own 100W transmitter on a frequency within
the 41 mb. Expect at least one test in the upcoming weeks, frequency
could be 7345 kHz!! This frequency is used by Radio Prague but not for
the whole Sunday morning. Last year's November tests were very
successful. E.M.R. produced a super-signal on 41 metres. The return of
E.M.R. is apostive development as there aren't that many serious
programming stations nowadays. E.M.R. will be a station with an
International flavour putting out a mix of oldies, European hit music &
radio news. A complete set of new jingles has been produced (in 4
languages). Pgms won't be taking place every month, according to Barry
Stephens most pgms will be aired in the October-May period when
conditions are better more reliable than the rest of the year. An
fantastic info-package is waiting for you including a large colour QSL,
large sticker and an info sheet. Sticker and QSL contain the well-known
E.M.R. logo in red & blue. It is to be hoped that listeners will respond
in large numbers showing they are seriously willing to listen to
stations such as E.M.R. Please enclose two IRC's/ two US dollars and
write to: P.O.Box 2727, 6049 ZG Herten in the Netherlands. Make sure you
tune in October 5th....E.M.R. is back on SW!! 73's, the EMR crew (from

RUSSIA - As luck would have it, as soon as I post a working VoR sked -
they change it. VoR reactivated two frequencies that were missing over
the past week: 1800-2100 9810 (good mainstay to Europe in the evenings)
2200-0100 5940 (annotated in the previous post as being missing) (M.
Fine, VA USA)
SINGAPORE - 7250 Warrna at 27/2305 was also NOT THERE! Only the chinese
FM type jammer . On next day at 2315 was at 32332 and continued to be
after 0025 much better then previously reported (Liangas, Greece)
ST. HELENA - The Sept. issue of Conde Nast Traveler has a good article
on the island, "The rock of exile" by Simon Winchester, but strangely
enough makes no mention of Radio Saint Helena Day (via Chet Copeland,
WORLD OF RADIO 911 / SW/DX Report 97-14, SEPT 25)
SOUTH AFRICA - After 3 months on air via Meyerton, World Music Radio has
not succeeded in selling a single commercial. The interest among DXers
seems to concentrate on QSLs, very few have supported WMR by buying one
of our T-shirts. So we have to leave the scene to the state-run and not
least the religious stations which seem to have no problems in filling
the well with money. There is a very slim chance that WMR will return,
either within a few weeks or on the November 1. Hardly anybody seems to
have noticed that we are off the air. (Stig Hartvig-Nielsen/WMR, 5
September via BCDX /EDXP # 62 ).
USA - CIA ON THE AIR. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the US
Central Intelligence Agency, special event station NN50CIA will be
active through September from CIA premises in Northern Virginia.
Suggested frequencies are 3550, 7050, 14050, and 21050 kHz on CW and
3850, 7250, 14250 and 21350 on SSB. QSL via KB4EFP and include an SASE.
