 CPC DX tests summary

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Lynn Hollerman - gmholler@xxxxxxxxxx

DX season is fast approaching, so here's notice of an upcoming DX test...

PLEASE NOTE: Even if you don't hear a test, be sure and drop a card,
letter, or e-mail to the station personnel, thanking them for going to the
trouble to run a test!

Here's a reminder of upcoming DX tests; if anyone has any additions or
corrections, please contact me. Times are EST. For UTC add 5. * - new!

DX season is fast approaching, so here's notice of an upcoming DX test...

Saturday, October 4, 1997 - KTGG-1540, Spring Arbor, MI will conduct a
DX test from 12:00 to 12:30 am EDT at 450 watts nondirectional. The test
will include classical, march, and Christian rock music, plus voice IDs,
test tones, and morse code IDs. Reception reports may be sent to:

Mr. Lewis Munn
Chief Engineer
KTGG-AM
c/o Spring Arbor College
106 East Main Street
Spring Arbor, MI 49283

E-Mail: lmunn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

WWW: http://www.arbor.edu/wsae/ktgg.htm
(Arranged by J.D. Stephens.)

Also, if you hear a test, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know, via e-mail or the
newsgroup! And, if you send a reception report to a station, please remember
to include return postage with your report...

One final note...both IRCA and NRC are without CPC chairmen...without
someone to arrange the DX tests, there won't be many tests, only the few
that some members have been able to arrange! CPC chairman isn't a terribly
difficult or time consuming position; if you can volunteer, please, please,
PLEASE do!! (you can e-mail me for more info!)

 HOT STUFF

Kent Winrich - Milwaukee WI - kwinrich@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Just a note from Wisconsin.

WAUX 1550 Lake Geneva, WI is running 500w NON-directional right now due to
one of the towers snapping off at about the midpoint. This may offer some
people the opportunity to catch them. They are directional east/west
normally. They name themselves The SportsRadio Doubleplay, as they are //
WAUK 1510 Waukesha, WI. Also, the person I talked to at WAUX said that he
DOES use the 1w allocation every once and a while!!! I told him to let me
know when he might do it again. I will also see if I can set up a DX test
as well.

Robert Wien - San Jose CA - rjwmail@xxxxxxxxx

KPAM-860 Portland may now be on air with 5000/5000, Christian format, per M
Street, still checking this. Also 1140 Las Vegas now KSFN.

LOG: Cape Cod weekend DX, Thursday NH outing

I got to do some DXing over the weekend. Very good low band Europeans
were noted Saturday night in Harwich and also on a sunset period scan done
from Plymouth. I cut the Plymouth session short so I'd have some time for
the Patriots-Jets game (Pats won 27-24 in overtime).
Latin American DX was virtually non-existent. Even in Harwich, the dial
was dominated by a blend of US, Canadian, and European stations.

Harwich logs (UTC: 14 SEP from 0148 to 0618) = Spain/unID-1143,
Portugal-666, Azores-836, Canaries-Spain-837, Spain-855 (equal to

Croatia-1098 usual "Muzak" mowing down Spain, UK-1089 totally destroying
WBAL, Germany-1017, Syria-827 ... finally broke some audio loose on this, a
mess on 594 seemed to have Portugal in there, Algeria-549 huge - wasting
550.

I expect to get out to the Seabrook, NH site (Lower Collins Road) on
Thursday the 18th for yet more DX fun. Previously I'd slated this for
Wednesday, but the outing has been delayed a day. I'm going via Route I-495
straight from work in Lowell, so I should be on-site by 6 p.m. EDT / 2200
UTC. With a little luck it will get auroral and I'll have a shot at
African, Caribbean, and South American stations that have been scarce
lately. Then on Friday, there will be the monthly BADX meeting at the
Lexington Club.

Tape loop contains info about the campgrounds.
Nice signal, gets out almost as well as a 10W TIS.
This and the other 100mW stations at Capitol Reef
all use the callsigns of the original 1610 kHz
               station. Slogan "Campground Radio". (TRH-UT3)
1520 KOJ738 UT, Capitol Reef National Park 9/13 2000 New TIS
on the air with 100mW. Fair signals along UT-24 highway.
Station is located on the park's scenic drive, which was
closed due to flood-related damage. Message
about the scenic drive. Slogan "Scenic Drive
               Radio." (TRH-UT3)

exhibit along UT-24 highway, as noted by "Petroglyph
Info Tune Radio 1540" signs at turnout, but transmitter
is near campground restrooms. Gets out almost as
well as a 10W TIS. Tape loop read by Native American
               from Southern Paiute tribe. (TRH-UT3)
1610 KOJ778 AZ, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. 9/15 1300
Noted with inane messages about boating safety read by
man and woman. Also mentioned tours of the dam were
available at the visitors center. Gets out pretty
               well. (TRH-UT2)
1610 WXK790 AZ, Phoenix 9/10 1200 Station is still active
(used to be a pest at home when locals were off
but not heard from home in a long time). Tape
loop by man mostly talks about parking structures.

1610 KAF721 CO, Black Canyon of the Gunnison. 9/15 2332 Tentative.
Station noted all night with mentions of Black Canyon,
nationl monument, visitor center open from 8am-6:30pm.

1610 KAF727 CO, Mesa Verde National Park 9/10 1730 Tape loop by
woman "Welcome to fall in Mesa Verde National Park."
Advised travelers that they had to drive a long way into
the park and it would take a minimum of four hours.
Officials at the visitor center thought the station
was at Park Point (highest point in the park, where other
transmitters were located), but monitoring throughout the
area suggests that it is actually at the entrance gate at
the north end of the park. (TRH-CO3)
1610 KOP795 UT, Arches National Park 9/13 1100 Station is
active, but gets out very poorly as visitor's

1610 (KOP798) UT, Bryce Canyon National Park 9/14 1300 Noted
running OC. Inquired at visitors center, was told
they had a power failure the previous evening and
needed to re-record the tape (apparently no
battery backup). They were supposed to be
re-recording it as we spoke, but the station was
still running OC the next morning. (TRH-UT5)
1610 (KOJ738) UT, Capitol Reef National Park 9/13 2000 Station

Mike McClain says approval has just been granted
to proceed with the repairs. This guy takes
great pride in his stations and still enjoys AM
DX. We need to get some sample bulletins to him!
               (TRH-UT3)

1620 TIS CA, Milpitas 9/14 0715 Fair-good with woman
               reading information about recycling (phone

1620 TIS CA, UNID One of the two LA-area CalTrans TIS
stations faded up nicely. Didn't stay in long
enough for me to tell if it was the Orange
County station or the one in Santa Monica.
               (TRH-UT4)
1680 WQO767 TX, Dallas American Airlines TIS noted with

stop several miles short of park due to imminent flooding!

The KIWA Pocket Loop did a great job this time around. I have not had any
luck with this antenna in areas like San Diego and Las Vegas where the dial
is filled with slop. But in less congested areas it seems to perform very
well.

Sherwood Engineering Co

Had a question about this already and I just learned that they do have a
Webpage:
                        http://www.sherweng.com

This company makes the SE-3 Sync Detector including a up or down converter
to use the unit with receivers such as the R8A which do not have a 455 kHz
IF. They also offer other products/receiver upgrades for radio hobbyists.
