Convention '98 Updater.
Interest in next year's Convention has brought intentions of
attendance
from>Scotland, England, Finland, Hawaii as well as Australia and New
Zealand.
Just to remind everyone, here is a tentative schedule of what is
planned
so far:
The Convention is being held at Camp Iona, which is located near the
township of Herbert, about 20km South of Oamaru on SH 1. It is being
held
over Waitangi Weekend so Friday the 6th is a public holiday. Camp Iona
consists of a large hall where we will have our meals and auction,
workshops, discussions etc. A large "Lodge" fully self-contained and
reserved for our older members, several accomodation blocks, similar to
motor-camp cabin standards and several ablutions areas as well as ample
ground for aerials and an obstacle course.
    Thursday 5th February:
3:00pm Convention officially begins. Welcome, afternoon tea and a
general chat and get to know each other session.

auction, a night-time visit to Oamaru's Little Blue penguin colony,
scenic
trips to Shag Point, Moeraki, Trotter's Gorge, Puketapu, a quiz night,
game
of cricket, trip to top of Mt Stalker for FM enthusiasts, Church Service
etc. We are also organising guest speakers on topics like "DXing and the
Internet", a visit from the guys at Mainland Radio, etc.
The Convention registration fee has yet to be set, it will be around
NZ$75 per person and will cover all meals at Camp Iona and the
Commemorative
Lunch as well as accomodation. You will need to bring your own sleeping
bag,
pillows, blankets etc. NB: You will need to bring your headphones - you
MUST
use these when listening to avoid disturbing others!
    Please let us know if:
- you only want to attend on certain days or for certain events, e.g.
the
Commemorative Dinner, your fee will be charged accordingly.
- you would like arrangements to be collected of dropped off in Oamaru
on
arrival/departure via bus, train etc
- you would rather opt for a little more comfort and stay at a nearby
motel
(we can send you details of these).
A full registration form will be published shortly. If you have any
further enquiries, please write to Convention '98...

Sharp-eyed readers spotted a couple of typo's on my recently-issued Cape
Cod
MW bandscan list.

1110 change WBT - NV to WBT - NC
(We don't get any NV stations here, of course.)

1287 change Germany to Slovakia & Czech Rep.
(These are the stations which sometimes relay Radio Free Europe.)

Any similar bandscans that anyone else has prepared will be of great
interest to me. Please E-mail them to me at "WA1ION@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" .

The past several weeks, I have been hearing an UNID Mexican station on
1090
with a sometimes powerful signal. They never have a local ID, but carry
the
"Fiesta Mexicana" network programming (practically all music, with
plenty of
jingles that say "Fiesta Mexicana". The only station that has been
ruled
out it XEPRS in Rosarito. Anyone know who I am hearing? ALSO,........

The past month or so, I have been hearing an UNID station on 1090 khz
with a
satellite country format. I do not think it is WAQE from WI, due to the
fact that this station does not seem to ID on the hour, or have any sort
of
ID or material of local origin at any time during the hour. They use
slogans
such as "A totally new kind of country", and play contemporary country.
I
have heard the titles of some of the program segments as "Boot Scootin'
Party", "After Midnight", etc. Anyone have any ideas as to who this
would
be?

Heard Peace Arch Travellers Service on 1610 that is a Canada/US border
service. It came in at 8 Sunits on my radio but started to fade at 6:35.
It
was a loop talking about Customs/Parks/reduced staff inovated service At
the
beginning of the loop it called itself KHA 781 and only talked about the
Peace Arch border crossing at Blaine WA and WhiteRock BC and not the
truck
crossing only a mile east of it. I am about 15 miles of this crossing as
the
crow flys to the east. This is the first time I ever heard this station.

MFJ-1025 Noise Canceling Signal Enhancer

The 1025 is the standard version of the 1026. The 1025 does not have
the
built in active whip antenna nor does it have a amplifier on the Aux
Antenna
input. Since I just completed a conversion of one of these units, here
are
some comments.

The conversion is just as easy. Timed myself on this one and it took 45
minutes for everything. The parts that you change/delete have the same
part
numbers as the 1026.

1. The 1025 has parts with leads as opposed to the surface mount com-
ponents found in the 1026. Except for the two caps - C8/C16 you do
not have to remove these components completely from the unit - just
lift one end. This would make it much easier in the future to
return the unit to its original configuration. If you prefere, the
   parts can be completely removed.
2. This unit is smaller in size. This would make it a better choice
for someone who travels and takes radio equipment with them. There
are still several places on the front panel where a small DPDT toggle
switch can be mounted to swap antenna inputs.
3. Costs less.
4. Performance. With limited use so far it seems to perform just as
well as big brother. Nulls are easily attained across the entire
   Medium Wave Band.

For most DXers this would probably be the unit of choice. It is
doubtful if
most people would ever use the built in active antenna in the 1026
unless
they do a lot of DXing from temporary locations.

Whichever way you decide to go, with a few easy mods these units are a
winner for the Medium Wave DXer!
