NORTH KOREA

Radio Pyongyang made a major change of times and frequencies on Aug. 4.
Each transmission now lasts 57-58 min. (formerly 50 min.). Broadcasts begin
and end without the national anthem, except in Korean. Korean broadcasts
begin with the anthem but end without it. Some exceptions were observed on
all the days I monitored, e.g. KK from 1400 on Aug. 6 was only 50 min. long
and ended with the anthem.

The feeder on 3560 kHz came back on last Saturday after a week's absence.

Also on Aug. 4, the station's official name in Korean, Chinese, and
Japanese was changed to Radio Pyongyang. Until last week it was Korean
Central Broadcasting Station. In all the other languages the same change
took effect in 1982.

Here is a partial schedule monitored in Japan Aug. 5-7. Audible frequencies
only. I will be back with a more complete report next week.

Radio Pyongyang's recent changes have also affected the transmission times
of the Korean Centran Broadcasting Station (HS) and Pyongyang Broadcasting
Station. KCBS on 6100 shares the transmitter with Radio Pyongyang's JJ
service on 6070 kHz. Pyongyang Broadcasting Station on 3250 kHz is
interrupted to carry Radio Pyongyang's JJ service three times daily. I will
report more about these next week.
