Howdy all & welcome to PiPa#194! (This is just the cover sheet, PiPa #194
should either be an attached file to this or should follow right after my
own greetings & name). If you only get the cover letter & not PiPa#194, drop
me a line...it's happened a few X....
How did you get on this list?
All of you folks are either first-, second-, or third-time receivers of
PiPa. Almost all of you are either FM pirates ("microcasters") or European
shortwave pirate listeners. I got your e-mail addresses from web pages,
newsletters, and e-mail messages recently because I thought you might be
interested in some of this stuff. If you have questions, etc., feel free to
drop me a line.
What is this?
PiPa is a fortnightly hardcopy and e-mail logsheet that's dedicated to
shortwave pirate radio in North America. If you want it via e-mail, it's
free. If you want it via hardcopy, you'll be subjected to a nominal monetary
fee and a substantial strain on your eyesight (tiny letters that might be
smudged, broken up, or cut off). I've been doing this since 1989 & it's a
real pain in the butt, but still it's fun & it's always nice to hear from
everyone.
If you don't want PiPa, write back & tell me. I'll take your name off my
list. I don't have an auto sender/receiver, so if I forget to take your name
off the list, please don't send 20 "UNSUBSCRIBE!" messages! I'm REAL person
with FEELINGS! :o)
My standard note about Radio Free Internet!
I've got a website up & running called Radio Free Internet! It's dedicated
to FM/SW/AM pirating, Internet broadcasting, Part 15 radio, cable-access TV,
etc. It's only been up for about a month, so it has a LONG way to go, but
it's getting there. Right now, It's got classified ads, information about
books, recent pirate news, PiPas, info about Hobby Broadcasting magazine,
links, etc. I've been adding new bits of info & graphics everyday.
I'm on the lookout for more info, so feel free to sling anything my way!

(this is my "news update" about RFI!)
I know I've mentioned this a bit recently, but be sure to check out Radio
Free Internet! from time to time if you have an unlimited Internet service
provider. I try to update it about once per day & (in the News section)
there's usually lots of schedules, tests, etc. from the US & Europe, in
addition to loggings of SW pirates from N.America. I've seen a few people
write "I didn't know that R.Metallica WW isn't yet using BRS" or "You mean
FRS Holland is testing tonight?" This stuff's all been in the News section
of RFI!
Also, I've been adding lotsa links to different unlicensed broadcaster
sites. Some of these are little info pages that I've put up for the station.
If you have a station & want something up on RFI, just send it via e-mail
(if you want to include a QSL, please send it via hardcopy & I'll scan it
in). For some examples of these pages, see the pages for Superclan Radio & ZYQ.
If you want a "real" Web page (with graphics, multipages, animation, etc.)
check with Rob Keeney, who's doing this on the FRN page.

Still lotsa PiPa logs & info, though not quite as much as last time. As
mentioned, Dr. Tornado of RMWW has not yet made contact about a maildrop.
Although he has been announcing BRS, it can't yet be delivered until he
makes contact. So, if you've been thinking about sending a report, wait
until it's announced that BRS is good for RMWW! And if Dr. T is reading
this, you've got more than 20 reports waiting here--please send contact
info!...Remember the Wreckin Radio International tests later today (2100
UTC) & coming up the following weekends (see http://www.frn.net/rfi) for
specifics. Tho WRI is a UK station, they're on 12 MHz, so they might just
make it...Speaking of tests, remember to check for R.F.London on 5805 kHz,
which has been heard a number of times in the East Coast US & even in
NZ...Speaking of tests, Euros, & NZ, FRS Holland just announced that they
received a report from New Zealand for their test last weekend. Wow! I had a
carrier for them (no audio), but Mike Prindle seems to've heard them (see
the UNIDs)...For a great catch in Europe, try Superclan Radio with *1* watt
on 6275 kHz, 24 hours per day!
For you micropower FM fans, I hope to beg & grovel & maybe get a report on
the West Coast Microbroadcasting conference for next time. Corona mentioned
it in the FRN Chat, but I haven't seen anything else yet.
Book news & ad:
"Access to the Airwaves" is available via Cabinet Comm. This is a biography
of Allan Weiner--a guy who started a pirate AM station in the late 60s & was
being followed by "secret" government agent (CIA? FBI? NSA?). After decades
of pirate radio, he created Radio Newyork International--voted the best
radio in the US in 1987 by "Rolling Stone." This pirate was the legendary
offshore station that was splattered all over the news 10 years ago.

"1997 Pirate Radio Directory" is now available for $11 + $2 s/h
(+sales tax for PA residents). This is like an 8"x11" format book of North
American shortwave pirates that were active in 1996. It starts with a great
into about pirate listening & goes into a bunch of station listings that
include formats, some skit info, DJ names, etc.
"Pirate R. Operations" is now available. It's 376 pages of info about
how pirates put a station together & successfully broadcast. It's mostly
intended for pirate listeners, & beginning & intermediate pirates in the US,
but if you're an old pirate or from outside of the US, it should still be an
interesting read. Cost is $18 + $2 shipping in US (add $1.20 sales tax for
Pennsylvania residents only). (list price is $19.95)
I've finally got more copies of "Pirate Radio: The Incredible Saga
of America's Illegal, Underground Broadcasters." This book is 340 pages of
info about pirate r., the history, current stations, how to hear pirates,
etc. It has an audio CD with about 18 min of audio clips. Cost is $25 + $2
shipping in the US (add $1.62 sales tax for Pennsylvania residents only).

INFO FROM LASER HOT HITS:
Maildrop Jerry Coatsworth passes on the latest from Laser Hot Hits. We are
now on each weekend from 0700 UTC Saturday until 1900 UTC Sunday on 6219
kHz. In addition, we have been over to Ireland recently & retuned the two
relay transmitters. One is now on 6240 or 6245 kHz, depending on the state
of the band & the other rig that was on 6210 kHz is now on 6295 Khz during
the day on the weekends. From Saturday, July 5, the 6219 rig will be on 24
hours a day through the week until Sunday, July 13 on an extended test
transmission. The 7415 kHz rig will also run sporadically during the day in
this period. We also hope to start testing 3930 in the 75 meter band later
in the year. Laser Hots Hits may be reach at Box 293, Merlin, Ontario, N0P 1W0.
