MESSAGE FROM JEFF WHITE, GENERAL MANAGER OF WRMI

Dear WRMI Listener:

Thank you for your recent letter, fax, phone call or e-mail message. We
are always very glad to hear from everyone, and my favorite part of
every
day is reading the listener mail! I try to respond to each and every
listener letter or inquiry on the mailbag segment of our program "Viva
Miami." I would love to respond in writing to each person personally,
but unfortunately time just doesn't allow it. But everybody who
contacts us does receive a copy of our current program schedule by mail,
fax or e-mail.
Those listeners who send reception reports also receive a WRMI QSL
card.
And we try our best to fulfill special requests as time and resources
allow
us. We apologize for the fact that some of you have been waiting quite
some time for a response from us. We are trying to get caught up with
our listener mail, but the recent expansion of broadcasting hours has
resulted in a huge increase in correspondence. To help us deal with
this, we have made an arrangement with Ian McFarland at Marbian
Productions International in Montreal, Canada to mail our program
schedule to some of you, together with current schedules from other
shortwave broadcasters and brochures from companies that sell
shortwave-related items. We trust that you'll find all
of this information interesting and helpful.

Those of you in North America and Mexico should find better reception of
WRMI in the near future. That's because the U.S. Federal Communcations
Commission has just granted us permission to construct a second antenna.
The new antenna will be a rotatable log/yagi, which will be able to
alternate between two positions: 2 degrees (almost due north, centered
on Toronto, and covering Eastern North America) and 284 degrees
(centered on Hermosillo, Mexico, and covering Western North America and
northern and central Mexico). When the new antenna is operating, WRMI
will be able to alternate during the broadcast day between our Latin
America, Eastern North America and Western North America beams. As I
write this at the beginning of April, the new antenna is being
manufactured by a company here in Florida. We hope to have it delivered
and installed within the next few months if all goes according to
schedule.

While our engineering crew, headed by Kiko Espinosa, is busy with the
new antenna project over the next few months, my wife Thais and I will
be travelling to three important shortwave-related meetings. First, on
May 9, we will be in Washington, D.C. at the annual meeting of the
National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters. This is an association
that we belong to, along with most of the privately-owned shortwave
stations in the United States. The second meeting will be the 1997
Conference of the European DX Council, the umbrella organization of
shortwave listening and DX clubs in Europe. The 1997 EDXC Conference
will be in Zlin, in the Czech Republic, from June 6-9. After we return
to Miami on June 10, we will bring you reports about the EDXC Conference
and about our travels in the Czech Republic and Poland on "Viva Miami."

The third meeting we'll be attending this summer is the Third National
Meeting of Mexican DX Clubs in Veracruz, Mexico on August 1-3. As its
name suggests, this is the annual meeting of DX clubs from throughout
Mexico.
But the Mexican DXers are also inviting shortwave listeners from North
America and around the world to attend this event, and they have
appointed me the Coordinator of International Attendees. So if any of
you would like to take a vacation to Veracruz and meet some fellow
DXers, just drop me a line, a fax or an e-mail message at WRMI for
complete information on this Meeting. Besides WRMI, representatives of
Mexican shortwave stations will be in attendance, as well as Alfonso
Montealegre and Jaime Báguena, the producers/presenters of "Radio
Enlace," which is the very popular Spanish-language DX program of Radio
Netherlands. We'll also have reports on this Meeting on "Viva Miami"
during August.

Meantime, we hope to be expanding our broadcast schedule even more.
This will mean frequent changes in our programming. If you have access
to e-mail and want periodic program schedule updates, just send us your
e-mail address. If you don't have e-mail, just send us a letter or post
card from time to time, and we'll be glad to mail you updated program
schedules. The major changes in scheduling generally take place twice
each year -- on the first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October
-- when our local time changes here in North America.

For now, all the best.

All being well, Pulse Shortwave transmissions should be heard this
Sunday 13th from 16:00 UTC on 3940KHz

Last minute construction of the transmitter and fighting with the aerial
at the site, means that we might not be able to keep to the 16:00
deadline, infact some testing will occur earlier on in the day just to
check all is well. We will be keen to get any reports on the signal
where you are - and more importantly we want your comments on the
programmes.

For those of you who are interested, here are the details of what we are
using this Sunday:

75Watts (AM) Carrier power into 28 metres of wire, 8 metres high against
an earth rod. The feed impedance of the aerial when last used was about
740 Ohms.

The trasmitter uses a crystal oscillator (at twice 3940KHz), followed by
74HC74 divider. The RF output consists of Four STPNA8N50s (which are
MOSFETS). Series modulation is applied using four 2SA1302's with about
130V supply. The modulator uses feedback applied using a demodulator on
the final RF. The audio is compressed, clipped and applied to a 7 pole
filter with a cut off at 6.5KHz. The output inductor is wound on a
Becks beer bottle and the whole lot resembles a rats nest.

The studio is linked, to the transmitter site. The studio has fairly
basic equipment, 1 gram 1CD a home built magnetic cartridge pre-amp and
a soundcraft spirit folio mixer. Pulse SW has nothing to do with an FM
pirate that went by the same name.

Thats about it. Hope to hear from you.

Dave James at Pulse.

( Comment from the editor - EXCELLENT work. I have had a good look at
this file, and was most impressed. Perhaps Jonny will do one for the
"Rest of the World" ??.
The only negative comment is that it took 17 minutes to download the
file - perhaps we have to upgrade from 1.44 to 2.8 modom ??.
Anyway this is well worth the look - so contact Jonny NOW!!)

Thats it for this week
Happy DXING
