official publication of the International Radio Club of America (IRCA). IRCA
is a club devoted to the hobby of hearing distant stations on the standard
AM broadcast band. "DX Monitor" is published 30 times a year and contains
members' loggings, articles on radio stations, receiver reviews, technical
articles, DX tips, and other material of interest to the Broadcast Band
DXer. For more information, and a sample copy of DX Monitor, send 0.32 US

The IRCA Bookstore is proud to announce that the 'M Street Corporation' has
agreed to offer a discount on their 1997 'M Street Radio Directory' to
NewsFlash members ordering through the IRCA Bookstore. The Directory
contains a complete listing of over 15,000 radio stations (AM/FM, US/Canada)

The trip to the bus was good for pirates but the BCB and Longwave was poor.
Only one new one heard. The Radio Zero was coming in very clear but had a
harsh hum that would not quit. Weather was good with temps around -10 C.
Lots more snow this time but packed nice and hard so walking was easy. Also
heard the 1630 TIS's from the Chicago area and yes the TIS's from DFW
airport. Would love to ID the two we keep hearing part of on 1610.

Just finished listening to KDAA 97.5/KMOZ 1590 but they were on 1615. First
heard at 2100 EST with clear ID and AC music plus local ads.
Now for the fun part They were on 1612 but moved up to 1615 where thay seem
to have stayed for the last bit. Their mode of transmission is a mystery. It
IS NOT SSB as you cannot get them on either side band and you can not Zero
beat the signal so it is NOT AM. The only way to copy them is in the AM mode
on wide (6 KHZ) with the Passband engaged towards USB side. GO FIGURE!!!!
Weird is not the word!!!!! They are in quite strong and larry Shewchuk in
Seven Sisters MB about 90 miles away has them in rock solid on his 500 mini
beverage.

of this station twice, listening from CA-79/CA-371 junction (5 miles
N.). Both times, KNCN250 (CalTrans Big Bear road conditions) was
dominant. The second time, LAX station appeared to be underneath.

1100-2000 daily. Lots of tape loops with local history, fire and
earthquake preparedness info, weather forecasts, etc. Gets out very
well; noted on car radio as much as 30 miles away. Slogan is

1610 CA, Santa Monica Nat'l Recreation Area 3/7 2346 Caught one of the
four stations, don't know which one. Male announcer gave 1-800#.

Santa Clarita valleys. Not sure if this is the old "Grapevine"

1610 UNID airport station with male announcer: "Long-term parking is free
of charge..." This channel was covered by a bad het every evening;
someone was apparently off frequency. (TRH-CA1)
1620 CA, Burbank 3/7 2310 Fair-good mixing with CalTrans station, giving
info from Burbank city council. (TRH-CA1)
1620 WPJ551 CA, San Diego 3/7 2311 Lame TIS from home is even a pest up
here. "We do not expect any traffic conditions between February 24th
and February 28th..." Traffic nostalgia format! (TRH-CA1)
1620 CA, Santa Ana 3/7 2310 Good with info for CalTrans construction
projects in Orange County. Gave station location as Santa Ana. This
does not appear to be the station I've heard from home. (TRH-CA1)
1640 CA, Irvine 3/7 2322 Poor-fair with info from City of Irvine. Male
announcer read information about a hospital. Still trying for this
from home. (TRH-CA1)
1640 WQO767 TX, Dallas 3/7 2313 Poor-fair in KXBT slop with flight
information and ID. Still no trace of this from home. (TRH-CA1)
1680 WQA767 TX, Dallas 3/7 2317 Poor-fair with ID and flight information.
This one will be tough from home, due to XEXX-XEBG mixing product.

STATION NEWS:
MEXICO/US: Caught an announcement on XEG-1050 and XEPRS-1090 that the
following stations were carrying the same all-night program: XED-1050,
XEG-1050, XEPRS-1090, WIND-560, and an UNID station in Walla Walla,
Washington. Interstingly, XED was also reading these announcements, but was
not //XEG and XEPRS at the time.
Local: Newspaper article listed 3/10 as the latest target date for
"K-Bach". Today is 3/10, still no sign of them.

Ramblings and Reminiscences about "Off-Season" (Spring/Summer) DX by Mark

Even though it's March and there's snow on the ground here as I write this,
the imminent reduced publication schedule of DX bulletins heralds the
oncoming spring, the end of what some call the "DX season". In the old
pre-E-mail days of paper-only DX information - especially during late spring
and summer - we'd have to wait quite a while to find out what great stuff
was getting logged by DXers on holiday at the shore, etc.
In the '60s, when I was a "kid", I heard some of my best DX in August when
the family went to Dennisport on Cape Cod. At the hired cottage near Lower
County Road (a short walk from the seaside), the old Lafayette HA-63A and a
short wire - haphazardly strung through pine trees in the small backyard -
pulled in better stuff than I got at home in the western suburbs of Boston
with much better antennas (including the "WA1ION DX Lab" Menotomy Rocks Park
Beverage). The superiority of the Cape Cod location was especially evident
when it came to Brazil and other deep South Americans, as well as Africa.
(Differences on Europeans weren't as great.) Splits such as Senegal (then
on 764), Surinam (725), and Haiti (1035) came in at "window-rattling"
levels. Even Paraguay (Caaguazu-645) and Sierra Leone (1205) were fairly
regular on the Cape. There were "tons" of Ecuadorian and Costa Rican 5 kHz
splits that are no longer with us. In 1964, on a summer night that must
have been auroral, I remember a tremendous run of Latin American DX on a
simple Realistic TRF portable near the salt marsh behind West Dennis Beach.
There were all sorts of hets and growls and almost every channel had Spanish
on it. It was super then, but even today no one will convince me that there
isn't any good DX in the summer !
By the early '70s, I graduated to an R-390A and a few of us here in eastern
MA (besides myself, DXers such as Gordon Nelson, Bill Bailey, Marc
DeLorenzo, Stan Morss, Tom Farmerie, & Ray Moore) did call each other on the
telephone or have informal get-togethers to discuss loggings during those
month-long stretches between DX bulletins. Nelson (WA1UXQ) had the most
impressive ham and MW DX shack with racks of receivers (Collins, Hammarlund,
Racal, Rycom), tape recorders, stripchart recorders, scopes, frequency
counters, and spectrum analyzers. He wrote propagation-analysis software
for the hulking IBM mainframe computers at MIT and he had connections to the
Air Force and the National Security Agency. His Watertown, MA attic looked
like an FCC monitoring station or something from a James Bond movie. A huge
altazimuth loop inhaled Israel-737 and other exotica as junior DXers watched
in justifiable awe.
Meetings were also held at Bill Bailey's place. Bill (W1YPK) had quite a
Beverage farm out between the woodlots and cow pastures in the rolling hills
of Holden. He frequently hauled in medium-wave goodies from the Persian
Gulf area and deep into Russia. Before retirement he was some kind of "big
wig" in the US Army, I think. Bill's house was a most impressive half-
timbered English Tudor that looked like it dropped in right out of Oxford or
Kent. Suffice it to say that a group of blue- jeaned DXers eating pizza and
drinking beer in the formal (almost church-like) dining room with its walnut
panelling and diamond- paned windows looked more than slightly incongruous !
Bill's shack sported one of Nelson's Beverage phasing boxes and two
R-390A's: THE serious DXer's receiver of that day. I think he also had a
Hammarlund HQ-180A, the #2 receiver among the practitioners of international
medium-wave DXing circa 1974. (Other popular receivers included the Collins
51J4 and the Hallicrafters SX-28A.)
Aside from the Boston area group, I had some get-togethers on Cape Cod with
Skip Wolsieffer (WA1CML) and Marc DeLorenzo. Skip and I had a "duke out" of
his National HRO-500 versus my Collins R-390A on some sunset African
medium-wave splits from his shack in Osterville. After that, high frequency
sensitivity was tested on, of all things, CB skip from Brazil ! When all was
said and done, both receivers did equally well. My parents moved from
Arlington to West Yarmouth in 1974 and, for a while, Marc DeLorenzo was
renting a house less than a mile away. Even in July we had some good DX
get-together sessions with wall-to-wall South Americans when an aurora was
in progress.
I suppose that in other DX "hotbeds", such as Seattle, DXers had "off
season" get-togethers, phone, and mail correspondence to bridge the long
gaps in DX magazine publication.
I do remember New Jersey and Long Island being highly-active areas for DX
get-togethers in the '70s. I went to a summer "DX barbecue" over at Bob
Foxworth's in Mineola, LI that was very well attended. Of course, the DXers
in NY and NJ were hearing most of the same stuff that was being logged in
Massachusetts.
Spring and summer aren't the end of the DX season, just of the high-latitude
season. Tropical and sub-equatorial DX will be in the spotlight during the
warmer months to come. That means Down Under and South Pacific for West
Coast DXers and Africans and Brazilians on this end. Of course a lot of
wire at a beachfront location (coupled with a bit of auroral flare-up) is
the best way to attack long-haul trans-equatorials effectively. Anything
else would be an inefficient compromise. Better weather will make getting
out of the house for DXing a worthwhile activity, especially when the
DXpedition can be a group effort. Besides action here in the east, there
have been some legendary summer DXpeditions along the OR, WA, and BC
coastline. I'm looking forward to reading of their exploits this year and
the incredible "Australian pile-ups" at dawn. Perhaps some day I'll be able
to visit the Pacific Northwest to meet the renowned DX crew there in person.
The best way to do this would be during a serious Trans-Pacific Beverage
DXpedition. I think that Newfoundland "DX master" Jean Burnell is actually
planning such a trip. David Clark from Ontario has already ventured out
that way and found it very worthwhile (and an interesting contrast to his
Newfie DXpedition efforts with a completely different set of target
stations).

I subscribe to a VHF reflector for ham radio and there has been a large on
going discussion about Aurora. An east coast ham related a story about
working page loads of Russian and Arabic hams who were running low power on
160 meters back in '87 or '88 one evening and was wondering if that was
related to a monster auroral event.
I'm wondering if anyone has any similar stories to tell about the AM BC band
during an auroral event???
