John Wright (Caringbah NSW) has advised me that the correct address for the
Sydney station (name unknown) testing on 1683 kHz is:
Con Nicholas
PO Box 150
Earlwood NSW 2206
Power is 25 watts, with plans for 400 watts in the next few months. Mr
Nicholas was surprised enough to be heard in the Sydney suburb of Caringbah,
so was very interested to hear that the station has been logged in New
Zealand. Please enclose return postage if reporting.

The Australian Federal Government was further embarrassed yesterday when the
largest recipient of Australian aid, Papua New Guinea, offered to help
rescue Radio Australia. PNG Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan offered to have
$1 million deducted from the Australian aid budget if it would help ensure
the services survival. "Radio Australia is the voice of reason in the
region," Sir Julius said. (Melbourne Herald/Sun)

INDIVIDUAL LOGGINGS
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Mika Makelainen - mtm@xxxxxxxxx
Participants and location:
This is a partial log of DXpedition number 104 to Lemmenjoki in Northern
Finland. Altogether three DXers took part; Hannu Niileksela from Dec. 28th
1996 to Jan. 11th 1997, Timo Reiniluoto from Dec. 28th to Jan. 4th and Mika
Makelainen from Jan. 4th to Jan. 11th. LEM104 was just one of a series of
DXpeditions, which were held non-stop from September to late January in
Lemmenjoki.
Equipment:
An array of 14 beverage antennas and 2 longwires, each 700-1000 meters in
length, was used. Most of the antennas were directed to different parts of
North America, with the exception of two antennas to the Southern part of
South America, two antennas to the Caribbean, two straight north and two to
Far-East Asia. Most of the time two receivers per person was used, the most
popular model being JRC NRD-535.
Conditions:
Nearly all DX-activity was concentrated on MW DXing, the favorite target
being North American AM stations. Conditions to this area remained
relatively good and steady most of the time, but were very general in
nature, so that the usual dominants tended to be heard over and over again.
There were only very few more narrow openings to specific areas, which was
what we needed to identify stations that were new to us. Friday Jan. 10th
offered a good opening to California. Conditions toward South America were
poorer than average, and to Asia much poorer than average. This was probably
my first ever DXpedition to Lapland which didn't offer any new Japanese AM
stations to me. All in all, the results for me were slightly below average,
and I did expect better results taking into consideration that we should be
experiencing solar minimum and exceptionally good AM reception.
The weather conditions were normal to this area at this time of the year,
with temperatures ranging from -5 degrees Celsius to around -35. As
Lemmenjoki is located above the Arctic circle, in early January the sun
never comes above the horizon, but there is still daylight for a few hours
per day.
Notes on the log:
The entire log of the three participants will be published in the upcoming
issue of "DXclusive" magazine. As I (Mika Makelainen) am the only one
online, only my loggings will appear also here - they represent perhaps one
third of the total loggings. Also my log is strictly limited to stations
that were either new to me, or otherwise relatively rarely heard up here, or
were of special interest for some other reason. For instance, around 150-200
most commonly heard North American stations are not listed at all. More or
less this applies to all continents. Needless to say, I was looking only for
a few specific stations from Europe.
Most of my tapes are yet to be reviewed so many stations will be found in
the coming weeks. These additional logs will likely be published only in
"DXclusive", as they are of interest mainly to other Scandinavian DXers.
It is also worth noting that in Finland there is strong emphasis on picking
up local station identifications. Stations are not identified by merely
checking whether they simulcast some other more well-known station. In case
the station in question has local programming at some time of the day, a
local station identification is generally needed for positive station
identification. This of course makes listening to Japanese NHK stations,
Russian and Spanish stations, among others, much more difficult, but is also
much more rewarding.
A few unidentified stations are also mentioned in case someone could help in
identifying them. The log is divided by continents, under which stations are
listed in frequency order. The details are in the following format:
frequency (kHz), date (day.month), time (UTC), station name and location.

1570 WSWV VA Pennington Gap, 1/31 2357-0000. While waiting for the WYTI DX
test to begin, I was surprised to hear Gospel music rise above
XERF and a fairly clear ID: "This is WSWV and WSWV-FM,
Pennington Gap-Jonesville, your choice of the best music in
America." (Henry Lazarus, New Orleans, LA)
1570 WYTI VA Rocky Mount, 2/1 0000-0030, DX Test heard, code IDS in two
pitches heard. Mostly fragments but one complete code ID heard.
A very long code ID, including call letters, TEST, TESTING,
frequency and location. (Henry Lazarus, New Orleans, LA)
1600 KATZ MO St. Louis, 2/3 0200-0230, DX Test heard, signal faded in
twice with Big Band music, voice IDs and code IDs. Could only
hear part of the code ID, but voice ID at 0215 came in very
well and included two mentions of IRCA, as well as mentions of
the call letters, St. Louis, frequency and power. (Henry
Lazarus, New Orleans, LA)

IRCA Mexican Log, 4th Edition
The IRCA is proud to announce the release of the 4th edition of its MEXICAN
LOG. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico by frequency,
including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule in
UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In addition, stations that have
changed frequency since 1990 are cross-referenced on the old frequency. The
call letter index gives call, frequency, city and state. The city index
(listed by state, then city) includes frequency, call and day/night power.
The log has been completely updated from the 1994 edition and carefully
cross-checked by IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an
indispensable reference for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size
is 8 1/2" x 11" and three hole punched for easy binding (optional).
Prices: IRCA/NRC members - $6.50 (US/Canada/Mexico/seamail), $7.50 (rest of
the Americas airmail), $8.00 (Europe/Asia airmail), $8.50 (Australia/New
Zealand airmail). Non-members: add $2.00 to the above prices. Make checks
out to: Phil Bytheway.
