For those listeners who wish to respond to the news that an Australian
Government review has proposed the possible closure of Radio Australia, you
might wish to express your view through Radio Australia at:

Email: ratx@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or FAX +61 3 9626 1899

The staff at R.A will make sure that all correspondence is passed onto
the proper authorities.
You may also wish to respond to Senator Richard Alston Minister for
Communications & The Arts

eMail: minister@xxxxxxxxxx or FAX: +61 6 273 4154

This is HIGHLY advised if you wish to keep this service.
The Mansfield review of the ABC has come out strongly against any form
of sponsorship or advertising on the national broadcaster.
Changes recommended in Bob Mansfield's report include the closure of the
corporation's overseas broadcast arm, Radio Australia, saying the ABC's core
business should be domestic broadcasting.
In this respect he also wants the ABC's Asian TV service, Australia
Television, closed if the Government doesn't manage to sell it.
In Melbourne, staff at Radio Australia say they're shocked by the
recommendation.
Union representative, Nigel Holmes, says if the government abolishes the
service, Australia will be further isolated from its neighbors.
The Mansfield review also recommends the contracting out of television
production with the exception of news and current affairs.
The Mansfield report did come out in support of youth radio network
Triple J saying the growth of Triple J's audience has been one of the recent
success stories of the ABC.
He says if Triple J represented a commercially-viable service it would
have already been copied.
Mr Mansfield whose review prompted over 10,000 submissions has also
called for long-term funding certainty for the broadcaster.
Communications minister Senator Richard Alston says the Government
welcomes Mr Mansfield's identification of community priorities, and his firm
opinions on the importance of localism, children's programming and news and
current affairs.
For those interested in finding out what the MANSFIELD report suggests..
please check this page out at Radio Australia.

Gents: Reference Jean's message (repeated below) re Suriname-670 --

I checked back issues of WRTH and RADIKA was listed in 1982 edition with
10 kW on 670. The 1983 edition, which of course was compiled about Sept/Oct
of '82, reflects a power upgrade to 25 kW. For the ascribed reason, the 670
listing disappeared from the 1984 edition and has not appeared since.
The return of RADIKA to the airwaves (1 kW FM only) first shows up in
the 1993 WRTH. One might suspect that is the reactivation of "a few years
ago" that Jean's contact is referencing.
So, now that the mystery is basically resolved, it would be interesting
to know just when RADIKA was reactivated on 670 and with what power(?).

Martin Elbe - Wolfsburg, Germany - DD9MW@xxxxxxx

Yesterday I came home from our DX-pedition to Blokhus, Northern Jutland
in Denmark. We, that were:
Karel Honzik, Czech Republic, from 27/12 to 13/1, using an AOR AR7030.
Finn Krone, Denmark, from 31/12 to 12/1, using a JRC NRD 535 Joachim
Stiller, Germany, from 27/12 to 6/1, using an AOR AR7030 and me, 27/12 to
13/1, using an AOR AR7030 too.
Blokhus is a famous danish seaside-resort, located about 40 km northwest
of Aalborg. The cottage we used was situated directly in the first row
behind the dunes. From the dunes it was about 150 m to the sea. Alas, it was
not possible to bring the antennas into the water. There were too many
curious tourists, cars on the beach etc. So we were confined to the area of
the dunes. Our antennas were rather short, compared with other DX-
peditions: Between 150 and 200 meters only. 4 antennas in the range 300 to
330 degrees, one at 270 and one at 240 degrees, all unterminated. I think,
that in Finnland or Sweden you wouldn't call such short wires an antenna?
:-)
But still the results were rather impressive. The area was very quiet,
within 300 or 400 meters no other cottage was used, so we could really enjoy
digging out even the thinnest signals. Conditions were good towards North
America until Jan 9, afterwards lousy on MW, but good for Pacific on SW.
The weather was extremely cold, down to less than -15 degrees C, but
blue sky, nice for a short walk during the daylight. However, that cold
weather gave us a lot of trouble in opening/closing the main water-supply,
as the valve was frozen. And of course we had to spend a fortune on energy
to heat the cottage. 4 Persons was the maximum we could squeeze in, with the
table covered with receivers, recorders and lists.
Our schedule was almost the same every day: Listening from around 1900
to 0000 UTC (when conditions were good also till 0200), then get some sleep
till around 0600 UTC, and then the main listening period started, with the
last signals fading out after 1400 UTC, when conditions were good. Otherwise
fade-out was at 1200 UTC. Then we had some food, afterwards going through
the tapes or listening to Asia, and then it was almost time to start again!
The time-slot between 02-06 or 07 UTC was rather disappointing, by far the
best time to catch rare birds was between 0800 and 1000 hrs UTC.
Here is the list of heard stations. Of course we will update it with
listening times, dates, slogans etc. But this will take some time. First I
have to write about 60 reception reports, and then the list will be made.
So, this is only to show, what we heard:

6185 R. Educacicn, Mexico, daily catch, sometimes like a local station.

SW is just a small example, what could be heard. Armchair-listening of
RRI stations, exceptionally good reception of LA stations in the early
evenings (Finn heard 49 LA stations on 60 meters around 2130 UTC!), etc.
Just one question at the end: I heard an UNID northamerican station on
790 kHz. Came in on several occasions, programme format was Pop-Oldies from
the 60ies and 70ies. Always peaked around 0820 UTC in the mess on 790 kHz.
They had a very distinctive Jingle-ID, sung ID, sounding like "RZ Radio, A-
B-V (or A-B-C)" I have that bloody Jingle threetimes on my tape, but even
after more than hundred times of listening I can hear only this crap. That
damned Jingle will haunt me into my dreams :-) Any ideas are welcomed!

During a recent DX-pedition I've noted the following UNID, perhaps someone
can give me a clue?

1300 kHz, station ID'ing as "Talkradio 1300 W...". I THINK the last letter
is M or N. I will have to play the ID over and over again, and try to
verify the letters. Anyway, the station also announced, what I belive
must be a phone-number for the station; 472-1300

Nothing new from the Arctic as I haven't been listening for a while.
However, one correction.

Radio station CKLD Thetford Mines, Quebec 1330 kHz has sent me an e-mail as
reply to my cassette report. They said it was not their station - but:

1330 1.2. 0632 4VJLD Radio Haiti-Inter, Port-au-Prince.

Hmm... this is dx'ing...

This is the TA part of the NF96 DXpedition... I hope to have the rest for
you by next week... hope I have time to finish it off... ed

Prologue - Jean Burnell

Newfoundland DXpeditions have come a long way since that first
long-weekend of DX back in 1991. Each DXpedition brought new participants
along with improvements in our antenna complement and our shack facilities.
The latest Newfoundland DXpedition took place between November 2 and 17,
1996, at the usual site, known to us as the 'DX Inn,' at Cappahayden,
Newfoundland. The antenna technology and our accumulated DX experience
translated into a DXpedition of unprecedented success. I am sure that it
was, without exaggeration, the "biggest and the best" medium-wave DXpedition
that has ever been mounted in North America. The logs include reports of
stations from 130 countries, and details of reception of dozens of stations
never before heard in North America.
This was the longest event that we have attempted, just over two weeks,
and it involved seven DXers. On Thursday, October 31, brought much of the
wire and equipment to Cappahayden from St. John's. I installed of the
grounding system, which is not a trivial matter in Newfoundland. (It is not
without reason that Newfoundlanders refer to their home as "The Rock.") I
also prepared the room at the 'DX Inn' that would be our shack. It was
windy and raining very hard on the morning of Saturday, November 2, when I
began setting up the two work-horse antennas of the DXpedition. A
one-kilometer long Brazilian Beverage of 12-gauge wire was extended along
the bluffs and rocky strand south of the 'DX Inn.' Then a Beverage of
thinner wire and about half that length was pointed towards Northern Europe
and the Indian subcontinent along the boulder-strewn shore NNE of the 'DX
Inn.' It was well past dark when I finally switched on my Drake for the
first logs of the DXpedition. I heard the Italian Radiouno station on 1062
kHz signing off just before 2300 UTC, which left the Turkish station at
Diyarbakir clear for its sign-off a few moments later.
The participants on this DXpedition were in two teams, with myself as
the 'roving reporter,' returning to St. John's every couple of days to give
lectures and consult with my research group. The first week the visitors
were Newfoundland DX-veterans Neil Kazaross, on his fourth trip, and Bruce
Conti, on his third trip, as well as a well-known TA DXer on his first trip
to Cappahayden, Ben Dangerfield. Just before midnight local time they
arrived. It was great to see Neil and Bruce again, and it was a real
pleasure to meet Ben. It was not long before all receivers were attached to
the antennas (through splitters) and both the TA and the Pan-American DX was
rolling in.
I was glad that it was less wet and windy the next day because the
agenda included more antenna work. Neil and Ben installed a second European
wire, which proved to be almost identical in reception characteristics with
the first European antenna. I hauled out another one-kilometer South
American Beverage ("the track-wire") that was aimed towards eastern
Venezuela, but I thought this gave results inferior to the Brazilian
Beverage for all South Americans except some Colombians. Bruce's efforts
were directed towards a third southern wire, 350 meters of twisted-pair that
was used with the Byan remotely tunable termination device. This proved to
be an important antenna that offered impressive nulls on the St. John's
stations "off-the-back" of the antenna. It was unfortunate that storm waves
destroyed the ground system on the remote end of the Byan antenna early in
the second week. With only this exception, the antennas were not broken by
gale-force winds in the first week or lost to the heavy surf in the second
week, even though there was quite a bit of seaweed caught up on one of the
European antennas! Also, it was exceptional by the standards of previous
DXpeditions that wire was neither rerouted by large herbivores nor purloined
by 'sportsmen.' The availability of many antennas allowed Bruce and Neil to
put their phasing units to good use.
There was overlap of the two teams on the evening of November 9 with the
arrival of two premier Canadian DXers, Dave Clark and John Fisher. This was
Dave's second Newfoundland outing, and I was glad to finally welcome John,
who had had to cancel plans to attend a couple of the previous DXpeditions.
The shack was a bit overcrowded, but we certainly had a lot of fun yelling
out when the likes of India (Rajkot) on 1071 kHz and Georgia (the country,
not the state!) on 1044 kHz were spotted. On the afternoon of Monday,
November 11, Jim Renfrew arrived to complete the second team. Jim was
'radio-active' in record time, a feat that was celebrated by an inadvertent
baptism of beer! In the second week significant forays were also made into
the short wave bands, and, in particular, good signals from Indian regional
stations, Nepal, and Bangladesh were noted. (The SW catches have appeared
in SW DX bulletins already, for instance in "DX Ontario" and in "Fine
Tuning." This report covers only the MW logs.) Against all advice, I
extended one more (unterminated) antenna though some rough terrain to the
west of the 'DX Inn' in the hope that this might be employed as an
off-the-back African Beverage. Its signals were poor and
interference-ridden, so the wire was retrieved the next day. Dave and John
left before the last weekend, Jim and I brought in the wires and packed up
the equipment after a final, particularly grueling night during which the
kettle succumbed to the constant use, and this caffeine-dependent DXer had
to struggle to stay alert without the assistance of Coffea arabica. In
order to DX, I'll gladly put up with the wind and the snow, the exertion of
extending and retrieving long antennas over uncompromising ground, and even
an errant moose, but I'll not DX without coffee again!
It is difficult to pick DX highlights because there were so many!
However, since the other participants managed to choose some (see the
Epilogue), I should try to do so, too. Particular satisfaction for me came
from finally hearing some stations that I have chased for a long time: the
Voice of Lebanon on 873 kHz, the VOA relay on Rhodes 1260 kHz, the All India
Radio outlets on 1071 and 1134 kHz, and ZBVI on 780 kHz. On the other hand,
who can deny the thrill of hearing four Paraguayans, a 5-kW station from
Jerusalem (1080 kHz), previously unlogged 250-watt stations in Brazil (1380
kHz and 1540 kHz), or a Uruguayan through a local pest (930 kHz)?
The DX was exhilarating, and the camaraderie amongst the DXers made the
experience greater than the sum of its parts. But there are others whose
assistance should not be overlooked. I am very grateful to Mark Connelly
for his generosity in terms of both equipment and his time. The logs were
improved significantly by his assistance with the typing and his careful
proof-reading. He also spent many hours concurrently listening from coastal
sites in Massachusetts so that propagational comparisons could be made. My
wife, Stephanie Kaiser, gave me a lot of help with the equipment and
supplies. I am grateful that she let me "go and play with the boys" when
there were so many overdue jobs I could/should have been doing at home!
Finally, I thank the Lawlor family, Theresa and Albert, for opening up their
house to us. The 'DX Inn' is actually the back of their home, which used to
be a 'bed-and-breakfast.' They are no longer in that business, but they
re-open their rooms exclusively for us. I think they must amused by our
peculiar sleep-by-day-and-up-all-night lifestyle and our criss-crossing of
the countryside with miles of wire. Perhaps they just want to humour a
bunch of grown men who are excited to travel great distances to listen to
stations that are essentially inaudible to normal people, in languages none
of them understands!

including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule in
UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In addition, stations that have
changed frequency since 1990 are cross-referenced on the old frequency. The
call letter index gives call, frequency, city and state. The city index
(listed by state, then city) includes frequency, call and day/night power.
The log has been completely updated from the 1994 edition and carefully
cross-checked by IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an
indispensable reference for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size
is 8 1/2" x 11" and three hole punched for easy binding (optional).

Prices: IRCA/NRC members - $6.50 (US/Canada/Mexico/seamail), $7.50 (rest of
the Americas airmail), $8.00 (Europe/Asia airmail), $8.50 (Australia/New
Zealand airmail). Non-members: add $2.00 to the above prices. Make checks
