Both major MW clubs (IRCA/NRC) sponsor Courtesy Programs Committees. CPC
members arrange DX tests from various AM stations throughout the DX season.
Donations of money, stamps and target station lists are one way everyone can
get involved with this effort. Canvasing for the upcoming season is
underway. Send your donations to the committee chairmen, whose addresses
follow:

   IRCA: JD Stephens
          PO Box 605

At this time, the NRC is looking for a CPC chairman, however JD Stephens is
accepting contributions from NRC members as well as IRCA.

Subject: Call Letter List

In the call letter list in last AM News Flash there were a couple of typos
and missing info:

WJNL Petoskey, MI is new CP on 750 kHz
WLVM Fairview, NC correct freq is 880 kHz
KIRK Bethany, MO not NY on 870 kHz
WPNP Mulberry, FL If I remember correctly the CP for this new station on 780
kHz was deleted last year. Must have been re-instated.

24 December, 1996:

580 KRSA St Petersburg, Alaska. 21:18 good reception.
1460 KARR Kirkland, WA 2.5 Kw. fr/gd with Family Radio ID. at 01:29 UTC

25 December, 1996:

540 CBK Saskatoon fair reception at 01:03 with the reading of "The
Sheppard". //990 CBW Winnipeg, also fair.
1010 CBR Calgary good with World at Six //740 CBX Edmonton, fair.

26 December, 1996:

1610 TIS Oregon State Univ with Forest Talk. poor to fair, with the
usual several coch TIS stns. Not bad for presumed 10 watts
over 1200 km. This TIS was consistently heard over the several
             days of listening.
1314 carrier only, presumed Norway at 0600. at same time carriers also
             heard on 1017, 1008, 747, and 1359. No audio.

27 December, 1996 (1500' beverage on slough):

585 unid at 0100 with weak carrier.
1610 Port Angeles, WA TIS weak but audible for about 30 sec before
fading. I recognized the voice from my Victoria home.
1630 KXBT superb reception at 0345 with multiple IDs, wx.
1660 0414 presumed R Aazz, with a very weak carrier. Never heard
             this one otherwise.
1620 unid 0421 weak, but audible EZL cowboy type music. Any ideas?

209, 245, 260, 338, and 379 all heard with aviation weather at 0446 for
Alaska varying from good to poor.

1610 unid TIS. Description of the great forest fire of 1933. I suspect
this is WGM476 Oregon City. The same Forest Talk TIS heard above, but I'm
not 100% certain of this. Quite strong at times, then fading into oblivion.
At the same time, I caught snippets of other TIS stations, mentioning the
"Mars point picnic area, Log cabins, etc", "Don't feed the wild animals". At
1457, noted at TIS on 1610 with wx info "High winds, etc". At 1537, a 1610
station discussing "Option Nine, and a new environmental program". Any help
with IDs would be appreciated!

189 Belagorsk, Siberia (listed) at 1422 with rock music, interspersed with
RR talk, then into the Carol of the Bells. Not your old time
             Soviet stuff!! fair reception.
670 Dillingham, Alaska KDLG with guess the song contest. fair-good at
             16:39
750 KFQD Anchorage at 16:45, with t/c for 7:45 coch with KXL. fr/gd.
890 KBBI Homer pr/fr with coch CJDC Dawson Creek at 17:29

620 KGTL Homer. CNN nx at 21:03, and local wx at 21:25 fr/gd.
1450 KONP Port Angeles, WA local ID, good at 22:35.

1638 UNID, JAN 6 1123-1147, 2x819 harmonic? Weak signal with slow fade,
only audible part of mx was flutes w/ occas vocal, my impression is
Arabic not LA; M anncr w/ deep bass voice between songs, one break
almost sounded like English; 1130 F anncr for 3 minutes maybe w/ nx?,
back to flute mx and M anncr until tune out after deep fade. Nothing
// on 819. KXBT from Vallejo, Cal. was unusually good this morning
but it was not a particularly spectacular morning for low band BCB
harmonics. Gray Line indicates E.India or W.Indonesia/Australia. A
station called Radio Lebanon Australia evidentally exists on 1638 but
I cant find any info on them and that is just too incredible to
beleive anyway. Anyone with any ideas?

Drake R8A/R8, Timewave DSP-599zx Digital Filter, Datong FL-3, Alpha Delta
VRC, DL-2 Phasing Unit, MWT-3S Regen Preselector, 4 150' slopers with noise
reducing transformers, 2' air core loop, Kiwa loop, Quantum loop and a Kiwa
Tuning Eye which lets me see what I'm hearing - or maybe lets it see me!

DEC 31 strong TA signals continue but unfortunately the early domestic skip
was back tonight. Whole band was good - spent about half hour off/on trying
to sort out 1548 around 2145-2215z. Seemed to be at least two stations here
in EE, don't think either was VOA Kuwait, probably a couple of the British
stations or one British and the Voice of Russia Relay in Moldova which was
heard last year. Signals in/out of the noise so couldn't tell much - needs
watching. First good audio from the German on 1539 but nothing from the
Swiss-1566 yet. JAN 1 good cx continue but scattered and mostly favoring
the lower 2/3 of the band. Het that was noted last year still on 872 - only
thing listed is Mozambique. 873 had pretty good sig from unid that I
strongly suspect is Belarus/Russia with R Rossii program. Syria-783/827
quite good again around 2145. Wonder if Morocco still on 827? I see from
the NFLD Logs that it is. JAN 2 extremely good signals as early as 2015z
but I had to go out so no DXing. JAN 3 didn't even turn the radio on. JAN
4 & 5 cx mediocre compared to the past few days. Still quite a few signals
but mostly fair/poor level with the only decent signals coming from
Iberia/North Africa. No real DXing these two days just a few quick
bandscans. JAN 6 new WRTH arrived today and although I haven't had time to
check it over closely it would appear from what I have seen that nothing was
done to correct errors that were in the last edition. Morocco was a mess in
96 and still is in 97. Networks wrong, stations shown in freq list not in
country list, etc. How much of a problem could it be to make two lists
match? Oh well. I have sent for a copy of the list mentioned in DXN
several issues ago and hopefully it will be better than WRTH. Doubt it
could be any worse. A bit of tuning around and some pretty good signals but
no real DXing done. Just a reminder that per MWC Ramadan starts this Friday
so it will be time to start looking for stns in AA countries on late - that
is the few that aren't AN already! JAN 8 0030z A-index up to 9 but some
pretty good signals. 0115 AA on 774, presumed Egypt completely blowing
Spain away. E-mail received saying the Spanish stn on 702 that was supposed
to move to 963 was instead moving to 783. Believe I read somewhere that the
reason they were leaving 702 was because it was Sud Radio's freq. Does this
mean the Andorran Sud Radio is coming back on? Later.

 783 UNID JAN 8 0115+ - after getting E-mail that R Miramar-702 was moving
here effective JAN 8 instead of 963 spent some time here. Around 0130
there was someone here with what sounded like teletalk. Man in studio
with soft voice, men/women on phone. 0240 some instru- mental music,
0255 woman in what sounded like GG but at no time did the signal come
up enough to ID language for sure. And around 0247 there was some
weak TT. When this was audible could find no other COPE stations to
check for //. 0300 man/woman with excited talk in what seemed to be
PP. 0307 het from off freq Syrian showed up and by 0311 their
carrier was so strong it was completely blanking the freq.
       [Merriman-VA]
872 UNID JAN 1 2151 - het on low side of 873. Only thing on this old plan
frequency is Mozambique. Was still there at 2207 and this was also
       noted last year. [Merriman-VA]
 873 UNID (Russia?) JAN 1 2151+ - man/woman with subdued talk, rather
somber sounding instrumental music, 6 pips to the hour followed by
woman with probable news. Good signal. Suspect R. Rossii which is
carried here by high powered xmtrs in Belarus and Russia. This was
on top and alone until 2204 when the frequency turned into a jumble
with SS more or less dominant. 2207 back on top with the woman still
talking. 2220 jazz influenced pop music, man/woman between
selections. Russia with 2000 and 1200 kw here seems most likely.
       [Merriman-VA]
1089 UNITED KINGDOM Talk Radio UK DEC 31 2358 - series of "Happy New Years"
from a number of people, probably the entire staff as I celebrate my
2nd New Year of the evening. [Merriman-VA]
1296 SPAIN COPE Valencia DEC 31 2300 - 2 men in animated SS followed by LA
sounding music as I celebrate my first New Year of the evening.
       [Merriman-VA]
1305 SPAIN RNE5 Ciudad Real/Leon/Orense DEC 31 2220 - classical music, 2222
man/woman briefly in SS and back to music, good and //1107 etc.
       [Merriman-VA]
1349 MAURITANIA Nouakchott DEC 31 2257 - bits and pieces of AA sounding
music, good carrier but poor audio. [Merriman-VA]
1539 GERMANY Mainflingen DEC 31 2206 - pop/rock influenced religious (?)
man in GG between songs, good. Het noted earlier in the week but
this the first good audio. [Merriman-VA]
1544 ALGERIA (Sahara Clandestine) DEC 31 2153 - two men in ??, 2154 AA
sounding music, female vocal, good on peaks but very unstable with
       lots of QSB. [Merriman-VA]

Recent TA signs from Victoria, B.C.:

29 Dec 0520 UTC saw audio (woman talking, poor to fair) once again here
from likely Norway on 1314. Also noted a carrier on 756.
30 Dec 0030 UTC noted carrier on 1314, but only noted audio traces at
    0600. Carriers also on 567 and 855.
31 Dec 0354 UTC, only a carrier on 1314
1 Jan 0114 to 0753, 1314 carrier in and out all evening. 855 and 774 TA
    carriers at 0526 as well
2 Jan 0056 to 0601 at least for 1314, up to audio (man talking and vocal
mx, poor) at 0341. 855 also had a carrier from 0340 onwards
3 Jan 0134 1314 just a carrier and faded out by 0450
4 Jan 0219 to at least 0710: 1314 carrier but no audio. 855, 756 and 567
    carriers also
5 Jan: only 1314 carrier but heard as early as 0000 UTC.
6,7, 8 Jan: 1314 carrier mostly weak and fading out by mid evening

--very frustrating that more signals (and audio) have not developed during
these "openings". TP signals in the morning have been quite poor during
this period, at least at dawn. Did note a carrier on 595kHz 0538 1 Jan,
presumably Dominica on late for New Years Eve...maybe I'll get an ID next
New Year's...

recordings of unusual stations may be P-mailed on cassettes, which cannot be
returned. Please do not ask for personal advice on receivers or other
equipment.

Robert S. Ross VA3SW - radiorob@xxxxxxxxx

I just got off the phone after talking to the operator of WJDI AM 1620.
I was quite surprised when I answered the phone and he said....."This is
1620!!!" I guess he liked the report I sent him and he decided to give me a
call. He says he is sending me a photo of the station and some other station
info, as well as a QSL Card.. I asked him some questions about the station
and he supplied this info about the equipment for the Christmas Eve
Broadcast.....hope I can remember all this OK........

Transmitter.....Homebrew...15,500 Watts...took over a year to build.
Location is about 100 miles west of NYC..out in the boonies.....

Antenna.....5 Element Cage....just like they used to use in the early days
of radio. Said the antenna cost over $500.00 to build from Wire, Rope and
Lexan Spacers....which he milled himself. Said it weighed about 60
pounds....and he used a tractor to raise it to a height of about 75
feet....which he says was not really high enough!!

Operator is a BCB DX'er himself...since the early 60's...he has heard over
1800 AM BCB Stns., 48 states heard. He is also a Ham and does this as a
labour of love.He says the total cost of the transmitter was over $10,000
for this one time broadcast!!! He just wanted to be the Highest Powered
Pirate to ever hit the Airwaves. He advises that the transmitter has been
sold....and that is the end of WJDI...they will not be returning to the
air!! They made their first B/cast back in 1972......

We had a great chat....and I thanked him on behalf of all pirate DX'ers
everywhere..I let him know that we really appreciate his efforts!! He says
it was fun...but that's it...he's moving on to something different. He would
like to hear from anyone who heard the Xmas Eve B/cast..especially from a
great distance. He does not have Internet access...but he showed an interest
in checking out alt.radio.pirate or anywhere else that he could get info on
his b/casts. I suggest that anyone who heard the Xmas B/cast should send him
a report at the following address....I know he would be very happy to hear
from you. If he is serious about this being WJDI's last B/cast ....this will
be the only chance left to obtain a WJDI QSL. I have a qsl from WJDI from
1990 as well, but it will be nice to add the 15 KW Card and the Station
pictures to my collection.

WJDI 1620
570 Ulster Ave.
Kingston, NY 12401

We also talked about some of the old AM Pirates of the 1960's and 70's.
He had some interesting comments about some of these classic stations and
their operators!!

It's times like this that makes DX'ing such a great hobby......why he picked
me to call and offer all this info I don't know....but it was fun talking to
him!! I will look forward to receiving his package of goodies in the mail.

Oh yeah.....he said he was visited by the FCC in 1990 and fined $2,000...
but he never paid the fine and the case was dismissed in the courts. He
fully expected to see them again after the Xmas B/cast..but so far they
haven't shown up!!
