CHINA - Peoples' Republic. The 1996-2000 Radio and TV Plan for
Chna Radio International includes the introduction of new high-
powered SW and medium-wave transmitters, for enhancement of
reception in areas such as USA, Europe, and Africa. CRI's present
international broadcasting facilities are in urgent need of
updating. A new CRI broadcast centre, to be introduced later in
1996, would upgrade transmission quality, and satellite
transmissions are anticipated within two years. The Plan
emphasizes expansion of coverage of central and provincial
broadcasts, and services targeted at ethnic minority areas, as
well as poor and remote regions. Radio broadcasting coverage is
to increase by seven percent. Satellite delivery will enlarge
coverage of broadcasts to poverty-stricken areas. (Adapted from
the "Messenger", pubished by CRI, May-June 1996).

LITHUANIA. Lithuanian Radio has adjusted the timing for its SW
relays of HS-1. Now daily 0900-1200 on 9710, from the Sitkunai
txer north of Kaunas - previously the sked was 1900-2200. People
at the Sitkunai station say that Lithuanian Radio may consider
extending these SW relays of Program One by one hour, to include
the 1200-1300 RR broadcast which was previously widely heard in
the CIS republics. Earlier this year, Lithuanian Radio had
reduced relay usage from 0300-2200 to 1900-2200 for economic
reasons. The foreign service "Radio Vilnius" broadcasts to NA
0000-0030 Lithuanian, 0030-0100 EE via Julich, Gewrmany, 9560
since early May. However, 9560 suffers c/c QRM from Rado Ukraine
International for its EE broadcasts to NA 0000-0100. (Nikolay
Pashkevich).

USA. WGTG now uses 9400 on weekdays with extended sked, heard
at 0000. HFCC sked gives 1300-2100 (Nauno Ritola). Now 1000-0400
daily, with two 50 kW txers as well as additional antennas headed
southwest, northwest, and northeast. Future plans include adding
the Wavescan px in a few months. Presenter of Wavescan may be
Bill Mathews, of Radio Korea's DX show. (Hans Johnson, USA via
Cumbre DX).
VATICAN. The HFCC Z96 sked shows registrations for the BBC Far
Eastern Station carrying pxs of the Vatican Radio, using 6120,
2145-2245 with 250 kW, azimuth 55 degrees. This is a
typographical error, and is not a new relay! The entry is given
as "SNG" (=Singapore) whereas it should read "SMG" (=Santa Maria
di Galeria). This caught my attention as Vatican Radio doesn't
normally use foreign SW relays! The entry would appear to refer
to the morning service in CC from 2200-2245, but as far as I know
this freq has not as yet been put into place. (BP).
YUGOSLAVIA. Monitored sked for Radio Yugoslavia: FF 1600, GG

SIGNALS FROM CYBERSPACE!
Initial promotion for EDXP has been via our messages in the SWL
Library area of CompuServe's Hamnet Forum, and also via hard-
core-dx. It was decided NOT to promote EDXP in
rec.radio.shortwave, at last for the time being, to avoid being
deluged with a stream of enquiries from interested spectators!
YOUR HELP NEEDED!
DX programs provide a veru useful source of information of value
to EDXP participants. No one person can possibly hope to check
out EVERY DX program, and I believe it would be useful if EDXP
monitors could "adopt" particular DX programs and pass on
relevant news via e-mail for EDXP distribution.
I am particularly interested in securing Program Monitors to
"look after" DX programs from the following stations:
* Radio Korea
* Radio Vlanderen International
* Adventist World Radio - Wavescan
* Radio Japan
* Voice of Russia
* FEBC-Manila
* WWCR and RFPI - World of Radio
* Voice of America - Communications World
* Spanish Foreign Radio
If anyone is interested in regularly monitoring any of the above
DX programs (or any other relevant DX session) and passing along
news for EDXP, please get in touch with me quickly!

WINTER IN MELBOURNE...winter officially commences in Australia
on 1 June, and with colleagues I am compiling a Spectrum Analysis
of SW signals audible between 0000 and 0400 on frequencies up to
7500 kHz, from 1 May until 30 July. That corresponds to 10am -
2pm here in Melbourne, and as in past years, DX signals will be
apparent on 6 MHz right throughout the analysis span. This has
traditionally been termed the "Antarctic Mode", due to our cooler
weather (!) at this time of year, and also an outcome of some
transmission paths crossing the northern Antarctic regions on
their way into Eastern Australia. Continuous reception throughout
the analysis period from 0000-0400 is already apparent, and this
will intensify as we move closer to the June solstice. The Mode
is influenced by the complex darkness/daylight patterns which
exist at this period, and transmitters in northern Europe are
always well heard via the long-path track, extending across
Central America and the south Pacific, arriving at Melbourne from
the south east. This analysis is being put together as an ARDXC
project, and the results will be made available in the Australian
DX News and also in EDXP in due course.
As a matter of interest, the earliest sunset time here in
Melbourne is at 0707 UTC (5.07 pm local) on all days from 8-18
June. The latest sunrise is at 2137 UTC (7.37 am) from 27-31
June. Latest sunrise does NOT coincide with earliest sunset, and
this influences propagation into Melbourne in the lower SW
frequencies during June.
And from a cool and wintry Melbourne, that's all in this edition
of the EDXP. Good listening! (Bob Padula, 21/5/96).
