I managed to take an afternoon off and I went down to Cappahayden, site of the
"Newfoundland DXpeditions", for an evening of DX. Conditions were mediocre to
the south, but decent antennas can still provide some reasonable DX for this
time of year...even some "first-time" logs. I used both receivers at once, with
tape running all the time on both. I've reviewed the tapes, and here are the
logs:
Receivers: Icom IC-R71A and Drake R8A
Antennas: 800 m towards eastern Brazil
350 m towards northern Europe
(both antennas though ICE active splitters
into both receivers)
Dates and times: UTC
TRANS-ATLANTIC
954 KENYA KBC, Kisumu/Nyamninia, APR 26 0159 - Flute and drums poking
through the QRM, choral anthem at 0200; this was tentative during NF DX 4, but
this time the signal was definitely // 4935 kHz and 1386 kHz; SIO 222. (I also
discovered scraps of // audio on 747 kHz.)
1008 CANARY ISLANDS R. Las Palmas, APR 25 2323 - "Star Wars" and "The Spy
Who Love Me" themes, male ancr said this was a pgm of mx from the cinema on
"SER", but not // to the SER stations on 1575 and 1584 kHz; SIO 444
1152 IRAN IRIB, Tabriz, APR 26 0059 - Trumpet mx through the TOH, the man
in Farsi, flute mx; two receivers allowed me to unequivocally // with Bandar
Abbas on 1566; QRM mainly from Spain, SIO 322
1161 ENGLAND Great Yorkshire Gold, Hull, APR 25 2351 - Female DJ, ads for
Williamson Solicitors and interest free credit, jingle ID, John Lennon song,
other IDs noted at 0004 and 0025; freq had at least 3 Brit signals, Strasbourg
and another which sounded like Euskadi Irratia; SIO 322
1161 SCOTLAND R. Tay, Dundee, APR 25 2336 - Scottish-accented male DJ
introed Linda Ronstad songs, after 0000 switched to female DJ ("Evelyn") who
played oldies, no clear ID until 0018; SIO 222
1170 ENGLAND South Coast R., Portsmouth, APR 25 2303 - Weather ending, "on
South Coast Radio"; tough freq w/ probably 3 Brits and Portugal, SIO 222
1170 ENGLAND likely Great North R., Newcastle-upon-Tyne, APR 25 2313 - Male
DJ, introed song by group called Code Red then asked listeners to phone in their
opinion of the song, at 2321 noted message about a small dog lost in "the Beacon
Hill area" w/ telephone number beginning 0191, which is the Newcastle
exchange... SIO 322
1206 ISRAEL Kol Israel Reshet Beth, Haifa, APR 26 0041 - Male host talking
to a telephone caller in Hebrew, "shalom"; SIO 333
1386 KENYA KBC, Nairobi, APR 26 0157 - S/on w/ woman saying simply "K-B-C
Nairobi" the drums and flute mx; SIO 232
1395 NETHERLANDS Veronica-Info, APR 26 0110 - Oldies, ID in FF; SIO 343
1458 ALBANIA VOA Relay, Fllake, APR 25 2200 - Noted "Welcome to the Voice
of America in Serbian" in those few seconds before the TOH, then wiped out by
all the Brits; SIO 222
1458 ENGLAND Sunrise R., London, APR 25 2203-2210 - Nx in Hindi...at Indian
flute mx, ad for advertising on Sunrise R. then jingle and flute mx again; SIO
322
1458 ENGLAND Fortune 14-58, Manchester, APR 25 2203 - Jingle ID at 2203,
pop mx later was probably them too; SIO 222
1475 BENIN ORT du Benin, Cotonou, APR 25 2129 - News in African-accented
FF; SIO 242
1530 SAO TOME VOA Relay, Pinheira, APR 25 2120 - VOA news in EE, // 7415;
QRM Vaticana (?) and a jammer, SIO 444
1548 KUWAIT VOA Relay, APR 25 2212 - VOA nx in EE, and later in "Special
EE"; over the Brits, SIO 333
1548 ENGLAND BBC R. Bristol, APR 25 2235-2250 - Mainly phone call-in to
answer trivia questions about television, noted "on Radio Bristol" at 2250;
often under VOA Kuwait, SIO 322
1557 CROATIA Hrvatski R., Osijek, APR 25 2224 - Nx in EE ended at 2226 w/
"that's the end of the news from Croatia. Thank you for listening and good bye",
then woman w/ ID "Hrvatska Radio Televisi", Stevie Ray Vaughn song at 2227;
SIO 333-2
1566 AZORES Em. do Clube Asas do Atlantico, Vila de Porto, APR 25 2149 -
Man and woman talking in PP, pop mx; still absolutely no sign of Tunisia
(although reported recently by Sharp in Florida), SIO 344
PAN-AMERICAN
980 BRAZIL R. Nacional, Brasilia, APR 25 2312 - Man talking in PP, finally
some mx at 2318 but he talked all over that, too; SIO 444
1060 unID, APR 26 0231-0315 - Accordian and piano mx, typical of the
southern part of South America, no anmts at all except at 0301 when a
gravelly-voiced man may have IDed, very poor but not inconsistent w/ "Radio
Mineria" , but I can't be sure! QRM from a Brazilian, SIO 222-1
1180 BRAZIL R. CBN, Rio de Janeiro, APR 26 0039 - "Jornal de C-B-N" hype;
SIO 433
1190 ARGENTINA R. America, Buenos Aires, APR 26 0026-0037 - SS talk about
football, ads for Coca-Cola and local chocolate outlet, "America Noticias" at
0032 w/ items read by a man and a woman; the common Argentineans on 870 and 1030
kHz dominated their frequencies at this time, SIO 332
1280 BRAZIL Super R. Tupi, Rio de Janeiro, APR 25 2153 - First Brazilian
in, sports play-by-play, "Tupi" noted at 2154; SIO 342
1390.22 unID, APR 26, 0012 - Suspect this was the R. Universidad Nac. de La
Plata from Argentina, with classical piano mx; SIO 232-1
1400 GRENADA Harbour Light of the Windwards, Carriacou, APR 26 0129 - Men's
chorus w/ religious song then man w/ religious talk; SIO 322
1460 BRAZIL R. Alvorada, Cruz das Almas, APR 25 2144-0005 - Followed off
and on for a long time, initially Brazilian mx, later "A Voz do Brasil" pgm, but
when this ended at 2304 heard "Radio Alvorada" jingle, at 2358-0005 football
(soccer) play-by-play with one team being from Bahia. This one listed as
"construction permit" in WRTH'96. At best SIO 343
1550 BRAZIL R. Gazeta, Areira Branca, APR 26 0035 - PP ads, deep-voiced DJ
w/ 2 ID's at 0036, over another Brazilian; this Brazilian graveyarder is the
easiest to hear, and unlike many of the smaller Brazilian stns, it IDs clearly
and frequently! SIO 333
