need these, let me know!

ATTENCION!

It's not too early to get started thinking about the next CPC season....

Both major MW clubs (IRCA/NRC) sponsor Courtesy Programs Committees. CPC
members arrange DX tests from various AM stations throughout the DX season.
Donations of money, stamps and target station lists are one way everyone can
get involved with this effort. Canvasing for the upcoming season is underway.
Send your donations to the committee chairmen, whose addresses follow:

You guys on the west coast should check 1134 khz and 1440 khz an hour or two
before and up to your sunrise and a little after. India and Saudi Arabia
leak through faintly. Saudi Arabia can often be heard under Japan and
domestics on 1440 here. I realize that the domestics would be more of a
problem on 1440 there, I DXed many years in the San Jose/Los Gatos area
before moving here.

The Kahuna Dipole is constantly undergoing revisions. I have not had the
original configuration up for some time. It is supposed to be 300 to 400'
on one leg, 150' on the other. Leads are NOT coax but just the antenna
lines loosly twisted together to the antenna tuner. The short leg is
GROUNDED to receiver and earth ground. A lightening supressor is a must and
should have its own dedicated ground in earth. Right now the version I have
is only three hundred feet in total length and does not work as well as the
original! You must retain at least the 2:1 ratio between the legs, it helps
with the noise reduction characteristics. The antenna is essentially
non-directional but can be phased with a loop for some nulling effect.

Aloha and 73,

1200 KFNW+ ND, West Fargo 4/6 0502-0503 Weak morse code IDs through WOAI,
XEYF, XEWT. WOAI never seemed to go off the air, but they did
get weaker for some time. New, ND #5. (TRH-CA)

UNIDs:

1490 MM 4/1 0155 UNID looping N w/lots of local small-town ads. Could never
make out the town name(s) mentioned. May have been Black Gospel

720 MEXICO, UNID MM 3/25 1200-1259 Man w/GMT-6 TCs, XE anthem. No
slogans, local ads, city mentions, anything. Killed by KDWN OC @1238
and presumed XEVU s/on @1259. Whatever this was, it was new for me,
as I have logged only XEVU (which is GMT-7) here. Possibly XEDE or
XEAVR. I know XEAVR gets out well. This after several MMs
monitoring this channel without luck. (TRH-CA)

Station News:

MEXICO: Effective 4/7/96, Mexico now observes daylight savings time
throughout the entire country (previously, only BC Norte observed it).
Effective dates believed to match the US. So in the summer, BC Norte will be
GMT-7, BC Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, & Nayarit will be GMT-6, and the rest of the
country will be GMT-5. (TRH-CA)

Greetings from the still snowy Northeastern US. We've got 2 inches of new
snow on the ground here in Vermont.

This is my first time sending in a log so I believe you'll want this info:

QTH: Coventry, Vt. (10 miles S. of Canadian border)
RX: Sony ICF-2010
Ant: 200ft. LW @ 120 deg. and 300ft. LW @ 75 deg.
Other: MFJ Preselector/Antenna tuner, Sanyo Tape Recorder
Other bands DX: Tropical SW bands and LW
Other comments: I don't do much MW DXing but I couldn't pass
                 this one by:

1640 KXBT Oakland, Cal. 0834-0953 4/7 "Solid Gold Soul" format, "Oh What
a Night" by the Dells, then off suddenly and I panicked
thinking I'd lost them forever. Back by 0857 with Aretha
Franklin, Stylistics, Al Green, Marvin Gaye etc. 0911 ID as
"1640 AM Stereo Classic Soul KXBT". Signal fair to good.
Overcome briefly at 0924 by two other stations mixing (820
             harmonics?). 2-4-3-3-3

Hi Phil! Had some fun while in Kahana, Maui, Hawaii a few weeks ago. I
used a Sangean 818CS receiver, with a 30' wire strung from my oceanside
condo to the nearest palm tree! I sat on the balcony DXing... beautiful!
I've never submitted to the NewsFlash, so for your records, my normal

Alan Merriman - K4GLU - P O Box 734 - Chincoteague VA 23336-0734 - U S A

Drake R8A, Timewave Technology DSP-59+ Digital Filter, 4 150' noise reduced
slopers. 2' air core box loop, DL-2 phasing unit, MWT-3S regenerative
preselector [merriman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]

MAR 30 I guess Spring has finally officially arrived on Chincoteague Island
- all the miniature golf courses were removing the plastic shrink-wrap from
the palm trees today! No real DXing done as I've taken a couple of days off
but a quick bandscan around 0215z MAR 31 showed virtually nothing in the way
of TA's. I don't think I've seen this few TA's in during the evening since I
started back DXing last November. Hopefully this is a temporary condition
as I am not ready to quit just yet. APR 3 0115z first time I've tuned
around for a couple of days, some nice signals in spots but scattered, Spain
weak for a change, 684 mixture of Spain/Yugo but neither setting world on
fire, Holland 675/747, Germany 756 good, 2 of the best sigs Slovakia
702/1098. 0145 Norway 1314 good with likely UAE behind with TT. St Vincent
705 noted at various times, not strong but had halfway decent audio - maybe
they finally found the modulation knob! APR 3 PM 2315z some very nice
signals on low end, not much above 900 kHz, Morocco-612, Canaries-621,
Holland-747, Syria-783 booming, again Spain fairly weak despite good signals
from all around them. APR 5 0400z nice pre-sunrise enhancement from
Slovakia-702 Germany-756,936 Holland-675,747 Belgium-927 UK-693,909,1089,
1215 signals not real strong, most running S5-6 but very loud audio from
all. APR 6 0200z again some strong signals, Egypt 819/864 both loud and
again in //, Yugo strong behind Spain on 684, Romania neck and neck with
Spain on 855 and this time was //1152 also! Nice to finally ID 2 tentatives
- had been reasonably sure of these 2 but nice to finally confirm with both
in at the same time. APR 6 2310z bandscan shows not much happening, about
the strongest thing in Senegal-765. A bit on the noisy side with t-storm
static. Maybe things will pick up a bit later. APR 7 2300z lots of very
loud signals, 702 continues to be very interesting, unid over Slovakia
which sounded like SS teletalk, WRTH lists COPE stn here in by freq but
nothing up front and in a recent issue of Shortwave Magazine I was reading
at Kulpsville someone in Europe reported reception of a RNE stn on 702 -
forget name of town but started with a "Z". This was not //RNE1 and no RNE5
or COPE stns in. This after 0000 on APR 8 so Morocco should have been off.
Also a mess on 747 with one playing what sounded like African music so maybe
Burkina Faso, Western Sahara-711/Senegal-765 local-like at times and
Syria-783 booming in again. APR 8 2345z some fair signals but scattered and
all regulars. Some of the below items are dupes that seemed to have gotten
lost in the shuffle to the last big IDXD.

 702 SLOVAKIA/UNID Slovensko 1 Banska Bystrica/Presov APR 3 0129 - nice
with easy listening instrumental music, brief announcement by man at
       0130 and back to music, //1098, 702 S5 and 1098 S8, both great audio.
+ APR 4 0134 - again nice signal with music, //1098 but second station
also with woman in ?? and big SAH. [Merriman-VA]
783 SYRIA Tartus APR 3 2323 - man in AA, brief instrumental AA music,
announcement by a woman and into chanting by a man. Big signal,
10/S9. Low pitched het from what I believe is this slightly off
       frequency. [Merriman-VA]
 855 ROMANIA Bucharesti APR 6 0212 - man/woman in presumed Romanian, into
classical music, mixing with and topping Spain at times and //1152.
       0228 again man/woman behind Spain and also //1152. [Merriman-VA]
936 GERMANY R Bremen APR 5 0430 - easy listening music, nice signal and
       //6190. [Merriman-VA]
1089 ALBANIA R Tirana, Durres APR 5 0420 - likely this with Middle Eastern
sounding music mixing with and under BBC. [Merriman-VA]
1152 ROMANIA Cluj APR 6 0214 - classical music, 0228 man/woman in presumed
Romanian and all //855. No sign of Spain's very animated teletalk
here. Other Romanian frequencies checked but no luck. [Merriman-VA]
1314 UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Dubiya MAR 15 0156 - TT, deep fade at 0158, tone
ended 0200, brief announcement by a man, 0200:30 IS on xylophone
sounding instrument which just cut right through everything, 0202
woman in AA, possible anthem, 0203:30 woman in AA and up to S7 but
with weak audio at 0204:30 and all definitely //6180! No sign of
Norway. 0210 AA music, poor but still //6180, 0211 touching S9,
still with female vocal AA music but low audio. Guess this answers
question of who runs the TT heard before under Norway! [Merriman-VA]
1386 KALININGRAD R Nederalnd Relay, Bolshakovo MAR 10 2322 - 2 women in EE,
believe mailbag program, only fair. [Merriman-VA]
1467 MONACO TWR Monte Carlo MAR 10 2321 - 20/S9 with preacher in EE.
       [Merriman-VA]
1476 UNITED ARAB EMIRATES UAE Radio, Dubai MAR 15 0223 - AA music, in/out
of domestic slop and about equal to 1314 in signal. [Merriman-VA]
1503 SENEGAL (?) Tambacounda MAR 8 2246+ - woman/man in possible FF,
occasionally mixed with brief periods of music including something at
2248:30 with lots of drums. 2250:45 rather somber sounding music, at
first instrumental, then a man followed by a woman singing. Not what
I would expect to hear on Senegal. 2255:30 back to talk with woman
and at least 2 men, and possibly some brief periods of music.
Finally lost around 2312 as WTOP had been getting steadily stronger.
This was strong and completely in the clear when I first tuned in.
Not at all sure of Senegal but with language sounding like FF it is a
       good possibility. Tentative. [Merriman-VA]
1512 BELGIUM Foreign Service, Wolvertem MAR 10 2341 - woman in DD, very
       loud and //5900. [Merriman-VA]
1512 SAUDI ARABIA (?) Call of Islam, Jeddah MAR 20 0135 - man in what
sounded like AA, briefly good, 0143 man in AA (?) with emotional
sounding talk, no //s to check. 0149 man in AA with a mixture
between talking/chanting. Frequency was being blasted by WWKB-1520s
Country music! I'm virtually certain language AA and this most likely
but still tentative. This appeared in error on 1521 in the last IDXD.
       [Merriman-VA]
1557 FRANCE (?) Nice MAR 10 2317 - briefly with man in what sounded like
FF, this is not sked to be on at this time. [Merriman-VA]

I've got a few quick reports here (full logs, and individual E-mail replies
will come later). From home listening: Germany-1539 seems to be on with
regular programming around 0445 UTC, including German talk and religious
choral music. Test tones were noted on one occasion. The signal is strong
here in the Boston area, despite QRM from WDCD-1540 Albany, NY. >From DX
session at Tom Beaton's on 4 APR (approx. 2330 UTC) - the highlight of the
visit was a surprisingly good signal from Burkina Faso on 747 (kalimba music
and African -accented French). I switched over to 765 and Dakar was
absolutely local-like.

HELP WITH UNID FROM LAST TIME:

  Park Barton - Tuscaloosa, AL - Drake R8, 35" spiral loop - ParkBarton@AOL

I need some help with an Un-IDed one.

  1270 unID 03/29 2331 "W _ _ _ " (with echo effect), then "W _ _ _ the
quad cities number one hit music station. All hit ninety eight nine."
Call sounds something like WHPX, but nothing matches in AM or FM logs
and I don't recognize any of the locations listed in the logs as "quad
cities". Although I was using a loop antenna, I have no clue as to
direction because unless the loop is oriented N-S, all I get on 1270
is a loud buzz. (And, no, I did not hear the WMIZ DX test!)

This is WKBF-1270 Rock Island, Illinois. It is co-owned with WPXR-98.9 Rock
Island. The cities of Moline and Rock Island, IL, and Davenport and
Bettendorf, IA are referred to as the "Quad Cities". I used to hear both of
these stations, when they were WHBF and WHBF-FM, when I lived in Milwaukee,
WI, about 170 miles from the Quad Cities.

Esa Hanninen - ejh@xxxxxxxxx

On your AM DX NewsFlash 4-04-96 I found UNID of Park Barton on 1270. The
station is WKBF Rock Island, Illinois, that's FM is 98.9. Quad cities are
Rock Island, Davenport, Moline and Bettendorf.

Got an email from the guy that runs the transmitter at CIAO.....

"It seems a lot of my posts don't make it through, but I had originally
posted that the station runs 1 kW into a single tower which has sloper wires
and performs as a three tower arry oriented north east. No deep nulls
anywhere in the pattern, just some forward gain and a flattening towards
Windsor (CBC 540). The transmitter is a Gates Solid state. There is a
stanby omni tower on site. Most of the old 790 towers are gone. I operate
the TX site, so any questions just ask."
