NOTEs: The above tests are being run as the "First" function of the 1996
IRCA Convention to be held in Ocala, Florida July 19-22,1995.... Due to
music licensing agreements some stations will NOT be able to run music
during these tests, while others will.

Feel free to include ALL reports and/or tapes in one envelope, but please
use SEPARATE sheets for each station. I WILL be forwarding all the reports
to the individual stations for their use, after I issue the IRCA QSL's... I
don't need Return Postage, but will forward Postage with all the reports..

I do not know if I will be at ALL the Ocala Tests personally. WMOP will be
done via computer. At this time I "PLAN" to be on hand for the WOCA Test,
WTMC Test, as well as the WRUF test. Feel free to call the stations
"pre-paid." Would like to "try" for a few of these myself. WRZN should be
heard everywhere under WGN.

 HOT STUFF

Mark Durenberger - mrkdrnbrgr@xxxxxxxxx

What's fun is to see how far you can track the harmonics on some high-power
stations. For example, in the Twin Cities area it's quite easy to hear WCCO
(50kw, 830) on 1660. And you can drive a LONG way from the tower and still
hear it quite nicely, thank you!

Until the new band is wallpapered over with locals, this gives those of us
"close-in" a chance to predict Expanded-band reception from WBAP, WCCO, WHAS
and KOA, all of whom no doubt have 2nd Harmonics well below the FCC
requirements. But it might also be interesting to see what other stations
on those channels might be doing; unintentionally or otherwise.

General Info

Various media sources in Boston report big changes at WKOX (Framingham MA).
Station is requesting to go to 50 KW day and night. They have started
approaching town about new antennas at their current site (neighbors are not
happy). Plan sounds like this.

Framingham will be night site. Going to 50 KW (now 1 KW). Current two tower
array will be replaced with a three tower array. Main lobe due East ?
(towards Boston).

Daytime site will be in Newton MA at WNTN site with 50 KW.

The local papers are reporting the station will spend $700000 to do this
dual site deal. It appears all studio operations for this station have
already moved to Boston.

Your reported WBIV reactivation on 1060 KHz at 50 KW reported a few
bulletins ago appears to be in process. The group has approached the town
of Wayland MA to construct a site. The site is easily found on a map it is
right on Mass RT. 20 at the Wayland and Sudbury MA line.

We all wonder if WBZ on 1030 will complain about a 50 KW on 1060 in the
metro Boston area ?

Guy Atkins - Bonney Lake WA - gatkins@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Here's some info that was posted today in "Numero Uno", issue #1361. It
should be of interest to other techie-type MW DXers. Please credit NU
somehow, as Jerry Berg took the time to write up Larry's comments. The
final paragraph was added by me, for clarification on the pricing
situation... Guy

LARRY MAGNE on the AOR AR7030: "It's an incredible device. Overall, it's
as good as anything we've laid our hands on since we started testing SW rxs
in 1977.... This is an exceptionally interesting rx."
He did not have a circuit diagram, but, by established PWBR norms, "the
results have been most impressive - nearly every measurement has been
excellent or superb." "Most rxs have one or two weak areas that show up in
the rigor of lab testing. But the 7030 appears to have none. It's really
impressive right across the board."
The rx is designed with exceptional strong signal-handling
characteristics. It is also extremely quiet, reflecting care taken in every
stage of the rx's design and construction; and it has good sensitivity, with
a switchable pre-amp to give it a boost. The four stock, cascaded BWs are
supposed to be 2.2, 4.5, 7 and 10 kHz, and the radio actually measures the
BW and displays it (as opposed to giving a nominal figure). AOR engineering
data to do lab tests properly was not available, but as of now actual BWs
are measured as 2.1, 6.6, 8.3 and 9.9, while display says 2.2, 5.9, 7.1 and
9.5.  AOR is looking at the degree of precision of its measuring system;
however, the narrower of the two intermediate BWs is definitely wider than
specified. AOR recognizes and is working on this. As an option, AOR will
equip the rx with different BWs using Murata ceramic or Collins mechanical
filters.
The rx has PBT; no notch filter, but optional audio notch filter is
scheduled to be available later this year. It has synchronous selectable
sideband; distortion minimal, audio is first rate. Synch stays locked
exceptionally well. "You won't find a SW rx that sounds better for
listening hour after hour."
Opinions are mixed on the operating system. It is menu driven; a
creative step forward but it could be improved upon. The rx also has an
infrared remote control which must be properly aimed. On one rx tested,
about 15% of the keypunches have not been taking; on another it worked fine.
Suggested retail price in U.S. is $1,399 (street price will probably be
closer to $1,250-1,300). "Even if this is arguably the best rx on the market
anywhere, regardless of price, that's actually a very attractive figure."
(Summarized excerpts from LM's test results b/c over R. Japan Media Roundup)
See also a review on the AR7030 by Don Phillips in the Feb 1996 DSWCI
SWN: "When I compare the AR7030 with the Drake R8E, I find similar
sensitivity and flexibility, but on the R8E propagation disturbances have a
much more destructive effect on the resulting audio. The AR7030 seems to
shrug it off and thrust the mx at you. Similarly, when listening to a few
Peruvian and Bolivian stations the other evening, I found the IDs on the
AR7030 easier to hear."
(Note from Guy Atkins: "When purchased direct from the communications
equip. dealer J'aviation in the U.K., the price to the USA is $695 pounds
Sterling, which is approx. $1050-1100 U.S. depending on exchange rate. The
price includes Fed EX overnight shipping, but there is a 3% customs duty
payable. I'm expecting my AR7030 to be shipped around the end of February")

The ground link is normally installed. It may be removed for two wire
beverage antennas or other balanced antennas.

The SW Preamp is ideal for receivers that lack an internal RF Preamp. Such
a receiver is the Lowe HF-150. Bench measurements of the HF-150 showed that
the receiver's Noise Figure is 12 dB. By adding the SW Preamp, the combined
Noise Figure measured 6.5 dB. The result is an extremely quiet receiver.
Other receivers with their preamps engaged typically have a higher Noise
Figure. (The Drake R8 with the Preamp engaged measured 9.5 dB, the NRD-525
measured 12.3 dB) The receiver's Noise Figure can often be improved when
using the SW Preamp, especially if the receiver's preamp can be disengaged.

The SW Preamp has excellent signal overload immunity. It typically measures
20 dB better than the average receiver. The measurement for signal overload
is Third Order Intercept or ICP3. The SW Preamp measures +34 dBm. A
typical table top receiver measures +4 to +10 dBm. The Drake R8A specifies
a ICP3 of +10 dBm with the preamp engaged.

Kiwa will soon have a phase switching control unit available for beverage
antennas. This control unit would connect to the SW Preamp output and the
CT (Center Tap) connection providing the ability to switch the receive
pattern of a two wire beverage antenna. (In one position the receive
pattern would be from one end, the other position would switch the receive
pattern to the other end or 180 reversal).

Reception below 1.8 MHz is possible when using a long wire or beverage
antenna by connecting the receiver input to what is the 50 Ohm antenna
Input. In this configuration the input transformer is acting as an
impedance matching device to the 50 Ohm input and signals are passively
coupled to the receiver bypassing the BCB Filter and Preamp.

Shipping and Handling within the US: $8.00 * Canada $10.00 * Outside
North America will depend on location - please contact Kiwa for pricing.

POCKET LOOP

The Kiwa Pocket Loop is a 12.5 inch air-core loop antenna that collapses to
fit in your pocket! This antenna is designed to enhance the MW and SW
reception of portable receivers. The tuning range is from 530 kHz to >20
MHz in four bands using a battery powered low noise amplifier. No direct
connection to the receiver is required. Instead, a special coupler is
simply slipped over the whip antenna for improved reception. For enhanced
MW reception, the coupler is placed near the internal ferrite bar antenna.

The Pocket Loop includes a broadband noise generator to facilitate tuning.
It is not necessary to try and tune the loop with signals that are
fluctuating in signal strength. Switching the noise generator ON injects a
broadband noise signal into the main loop. The main loop is then tuned for
maximum noise output at the desired frequency.

The Pocket Loop also has a direct antenna output connection for receivers
that have an external antenna input. This direct output is a high impedance
output which will connect well with portable receivers. It will also
connect well with table top receivers at the high impedance antenna input
used for long wires. (The Pocket Loop is not capable of driving a 50 Ohm
antenna input)

The Pocket Loop is powered by a 9 volt alkaline battery. Power consumption
is extremely low, drawing only 8 ma. As a comparison, the Radio Shack
active tuned whip antenna draws 27 ma.

Kiwa is also looking into the possibility of providing the new Duracell
"Procell" 9 volt batteries. These batteries provide typically 20 to 30%
longer battery life then the best alkalines. They are a favorite for use in
wireless microphone systems where long battery life is essential.

Chassis dimensions are: 3 in x 4.5 in x 2.25 in. When the antenna is
collapsed the overall dimensions are 4.0 in x 4.5 x 3.5 in.

The Kiwa Pocket Loop is the ideal travel companion for those who require a
loop antenna for on the go!

Price $120.00

Due to some unexpected delays, the Pocket Loop will be available in
mid-March!

TROPICAL BAND LOOP

We made the decision in November to delay the production of the Tropical
Band Loop to bring out the SW Preamp and Pocket Loop. We will will continue
our plans with this loop as soon as the Pocket Loop is out.

The Kiwa Tropical Band Air-Core Loop is a High Performance antenna (I meter
square) that provides low noise reception while tuning 1.8 to 7.0 mHz. The
unique design of the construction and electronics includes the following
features:

* The Antenna uses a 3 loop design for improved performance.

* The Main Antenna is a hi-Q loop using an air-variable tuning capacitor
with 6 to 1 reduction drive. Hi/Low Electro-static shielding of the main
loop is provided for local noise reduction.

* The 2nd loop is a balanced electro-statically shielded loop to provide
the signal drive for the receiver. This loop is amplified by a balanced
amplifier that exhibits extremely low noise with exceptional immunity to
overload.

* The 3rd loop is for coupling an Auxillary Antenna into the Pickup Loop.
This provides the ability to combine the Auxillary Antenna signal with the
Main Loop Antenna. Tuning of the 3rd loop is by an air-variable tuning
capacitor with 6 to 1 reduction drive. The Auxillary Antenna has a
switchable input for 50 Ohm or hi-Z wire antennas such as the beverage
antenna. An Auxillary Antenna Level control adjusts the drive to the Pickup
Loop.

* A Whip Antenna is provided as a second antenna that does not require
tuning. This antenna is for fast bandscanning.

* The antenna may be rotated or tilted to reduce local interference.
Standard mounting for a camera/VCR tripod is provided.

* The entire antenna is collapsable in two stages. The first is on the
tripod. The second is when the antenna is removed from the tripod for
transport.

* The antenna may be powered by a 12 volt battery.

Pricing for the Tropical Band Loop will be available at a later date.
